Honestly? Well-earned. Pikachu is not the main character, it was nothing special in the first game, just a random encounter hidden away behind Pokémon being shilled way harder like the starters, Mew and Clefairy. But Pikachu's cuteness naturally launched it to the top, with early guides telling japanese players to go get one as soon as possible, and the production company OLM decided to make him the main star against all odds.
