Ending spoilers:
The Medusa are a species of mechanical sentient alien and they sent themselves all over Earth and petrified the humans with the goal of humans breaking free from the petrification, learning the benefits of petrification (instant healing, immortality) then learning how to construct more Medusas on their own based on the leftover Medusa corpses because the Medusa can't reproduce on their own, then after they establish a Medusa factory they leave for another planet to repeat the same process.
The reason why they kept spamming "WHY" on the radio waves are because they're seething that humans are so dumb that it took thousands of years just to break out of petrification and they still don't know how to make more Medusa. When Senku confronted the main Medusa fleet on the Moon and explained their reproduction cycle, they gave up on humanity and left Earth because humans are too dumb and primitive to serve their goals, except for a single Medusa who decided to stay on Earth. Then the final chapter has Senku planning on creating a time machine using that single remaining Medusa to prevent Earth from getting petrified in the first place.

They had started to give up on humanity before the people of Treasure Island inadvertently started broadcasting radio waves, because their feather headdresses became statically charged when they were polishing seashells. This caused the swarm on the moon to realize humanity might have the potential they were looking for, and send a group down to Treasure Island as another reminder. They're likened to parasites, so disrupting the host's biological processes are their modus operandi.

However, the humans of Treasure Island rejected the proposal of immortality and instead weaponized it against their fellow men, and eventually began destroying medusae. This greatly confused the swarm on the moon, and so they continued to watch. When Senku sent out strong radio waves from the Kingdom of Might radio tower they began to watch once more, confused on the contradiction that is humanity.
Hence the "WHY".

They were unclear if humanity had the capacity to aid in their reproduction or not. Senku proposed so, as in ten short years they went from breaking free to landing on the moon, but the main swarm wasn't impressed and fled.

The "time travel" mentioned before turned out to be the petrification wave moving faster than light, so it could petrify people in the past. At some point in the future this technology was completed, and Byakuya Ishigami was the first target, petrified in the river where he 'died', moments before his death. His statue was buried on Treasure Island and later taken to Ishigami Village on the mainland. He now sleeps deep beneath the village cemetery, waiting for Senku to wake him up.

Gen is the real redundant character. Beyond the first few chapters after he's introduced he doesn't really do anything, and then he ACTUALLY does nothing after a point. One of the worst things about Dr Stone is that it constantly introduces cool new characters, and once their arc is done they just get dragged along as the crew keeps growing. They never get any development and most of their lines are just stating scientific stuff to explain shit to the viewer. Gen at least occasionally still does Gen-esque stuff, while others like Moze never had a chance of relevancy.

I'm watching final season but not excited about it. Will they adapt 4d science after? I only care about the end scene
