I read all Zaregoto after watching it and I don't know what to think about the first adaptation. It was far too serious while the series has a lot of comedic elements

I wish they hadn't Watanabe-fied the designs that much. Maybe if the production was better and the direction of it was more interesting I wouldn't mind them as much, but considering how it ended up, the take designs would at least make it a bit more interesting visually.

I think current SHAFT are fine, the younger talent creatively leading the studio do a good job. Nothing's ever going to compare to mid-late 2000's SHAFT though, the collection of talent there working at their peak at that time is still unmatched.
