The best part is that the problems they are trying to escape from are not minor or trivial. Subaru uses The World as a way to regain some control over her life because she is paralyzed in real life and cannot do anything without the help of her parents. The main character is a victim of abuse, and another character is a divorced father who struggles to connect with his son and uses one of the players as a sort of surrogate. The character writing is consistently strong, and on top of that, there’s the mystery surrounding Aura, Morgana, and the creator of the game..hack//SIGN is fantastic, man. Every time I read someone say, "It's slow and boring," I can't help but sigh. It’s definitely something you need to be in the mood to watch, but it’s leagues above what other, more popular anime have done with a similar setting.
