Cain is expelled from the rest of humanity, but he says he will die in the wilderness if he's thrown out on his own like this, so god gives him a blessing that anything that harms him will receive seven times whatever they do to him in turn, showing that even when Cain is cast out, he is still under god's protection. This shows God's mercy even with those that sin, they are not outside of god's love. Cain went on to form his own village in the wilderness eventually, somehow he started a new clan of humans. While Adam, Eve, and their rarely mentioned son Seth created an entirely different clan. Its assumed that god created women for Seth and Cain eventually so they could also have offspring. I forget if the offspring of Cain were eventually wiped out or if they were forgiven.There's way more than one lesson to this story, which is why its hard to speak to a single theme, but ultimately all the bible stories are very humanistic, and show humanities failings, but at the same time God forgives or God saves. But that doesn't mean there isn't any cost for sin, just look at the story of David.
