Recently I came to a realization that all the problems of modern romance manga can be blamed on one common ancestor - Oh My Goddess. That manga started off like a fun comedic romance story that moved at a really good pace, but then it ran for so goddamn long (from 1988 to 2014) that the protagonist had to become a dim-witted herbivore who wouldn't return the obvious affections of those around him despite him and the main girl kissing twice in the first ten chapters. Before this, main guys in romance comedies were either normal guys doing their thing, or perverts who needed to be taught a lesson. But after Oh My Goddess, they became more and more clueless as other manga started copying it, and now we're at a point where any physical contact is portrayed as some major step in the relationship.

I don't understand why so much anime romance is written like this (especially shoujo anime), and it really goes beyond it being endless blueballing, it defies every expectation of what a human relationship or romantic love is. I never read Love Hina, but 14 volumes tell me it shouldn't be as bad as forty-something volumes of Belldandy not getting her holes plowed by her only star-crossed lover. No wonder the entire doujinshi output for that series is NTR, imagine how frustrating it was to read for all those years.
I've been reading Dandadan recently, and it's refreshing that the author is fully aware of all these cliches, and plays with them instead of following them. If there's a misunderstanding, it won't last long, and would be resolved satisfyingly. If there's a romantic rival, the main characters will admit and face their jealousy like normal people instead of falling into the retarded "will they/won't they" love triangle. While the awkwardness is present, it's how actual teenagers in love act around each other, instead of doing the whole "if I touch her hand, she will surely get pregnant". It's obviously still slow because Shueisha wants this story to be a big thing, but otherwise, I've no clue how a battle shonen ended up with a better written romance than most romance manga I've read in a while.

Editors/publishers want to milk a series for every last dime rather than have a self-contained story that ends after four or five books. I think quite a few modern entrants are trying to do something different (Boku no Yaiba for example) but that's just the general model - look at serial programming like Friends in America for a western example. Fair, I'm sure I'm the odd one out but I enjoy the cosplay autism intertwined with the romance. I find Shinichi's art to be gorgeous, especially with Marin's outfits. And I do like the theme of just being yourself, whether that's showing off your powerlevel, or doing the opposite. If others aren’t fond of you, well then that’s their problem.
It's a positive message that rings true more so today than ever before. Today many people feel they can only enjoy things with fifty levels of irony.
