Have you ever traveled to Japan to visit places that are related to your favorite manga or anime?

I'm not an EOP, am quiet in public while there, and always give up my seat to the elderly even when it's not a 優先座席 (so always end up standing on any crowded train basically) even though most oldies there don't seem to want one to do that (probably from a sense of pride at not having to have someone give you a seat).

If you mean Shirakawago, yes, a few times. The shrine there is where I found >>275315800

Also found some other ema with some cosplaying foreign tranny who had PRINTED AND GLUED HIS PHOTOS TO THE FUCKING EMA, never seen anything else like that anywhere after 10+ trips to the moon (and the better part of a year studying abroad in Kyoto in 2012) and hundreds of shrine visits. Will never forget the sense of disgust I felt for my fellow gaijin that day.

As part of an organised tour, yes. TEPCO do short educational tours around the plant now for recognised operators.

You get about 15 minutes in front of the reactor buildings which is where they took that pic for us (own cameras weren't allowed). Only time I've had to sign up to a filthy group tour, always travel solo otherwise/organise group outings for friends and family myself.

You can take a bus from Takayama generally or some other cities, there's no direct rail line so other than a rental car (or taxi if some filthy rich faggot) no other way to get there, at least not via public transport.

>>275316015
I have hiked probably a cumulative month on the moon in the wilderness over more than a decade, including 5 days relatively isolated on the Kohechi, and never once ran into anything other than a fucking deer despite countless bear warning signs (including a 'bear last spotted 20 hours ago' warning at Kamikochi). Consider yourself lucky for a rare experience.

Not really
Your main form of transport is most likely train/bus and a lot of the signs around are in English to help you guide around. Unless you yourself is a nip, the locals will know you’re a gaijin and they expect you to not know squat of japanese
>>
Does anyone have normalfag recommendations that are not the usual temple/tourist stuff? My brother plans on going to osaka for a few weeks next month and he does not know anything about japan, nor does he care for nature. He's a good guy and respects non-shit cultures so I'm not worried about him behaving like a jeet, chink or bogan.

The radiation is relatively minimal everywhere now even if still technically a few multiples above standard background. Only directly in front of the reactors there was it a problem, about 2 dental x-rays worth in the 15 minutes they allow, and the geiger counters screech the second you hop off the bus.

Thats 99% true, especially since most hostels in a city will be staffed by koreans fully comfortable with foreigners. But theres plenty of places outside the city that won't deal with anyone who doesnt speak Japanese. In my case I was travelling with a Japanese friend and had little trouble but we met up with a guy from France who couldn't stay anywhere because the inn keepers kept turning him away even though he'd try to use prewritten messages and translation apps.

Still, cities are very accommodating and used to aimless gaijin and you just need to plan and research things thoroughly if you go outside them
>>
>>275316137
You really should
With the yen weakening, it’s a perfect opportunity to explore Japan
If you have the time and money, I’d say go for it
If you’re staying for two weeks, ~$2k not including air fare should do the trick
Also have google translate out since most of your interactions with people that are not the konbini clerks or hotel staff will be useful. And you can use lens to translate signs that are not in English. Saved my ass several times would recommend

*Oh and as for the still-restricted areas, no, only get to see those from the bus. But many former restricted areas like Futaba town are open for resettlement now anyway.

Highlight of the tour though was probably visiting an old Ojisan farmer who didn't follow government directives to liquidate his (unsellable) contaminated herd and still takes care of them though, while driving around the country in a gaisensha when he has time railing against nuclear power.

>>275316092
>most places I went to had a dozen tour buses loaded with chinese people at them.
Yes, even before the current wave of overtourism, Chinks have always been insufferable and manage to show up in large numbers even at what one would think are relatively minor tourist sites (e.g. Ibusuki's Nagasakibana cape for instance most recently, such a little fucking middle of nowhere tourist site but even there the Chinkgroups decide to visit).
>>
>>275316147
That’s why I just straight up book my hotels a few months in advance to avoid stuff like this. I 100% know they have vacancies and I know they won’t let me because I’m a gaijin

We went up a mountain (mt shirakami) in rural west aomori and saw a total of one other group of humans on the whole 8 hour trip, and that was so early on that I'm not sure they even went for the same peak.
There was a lot of fog/low clouds as well, may have had something to do with it.
And the only "lucky" is see in that is the bear just fucking off, and us learning from that.

>>275316147
We stayed at mostly ryokan booked in advance via booking or sometimes their own homepage. In the latter case I sent both japanese and english text in the same email, and stated age, country of origin and intention in the region, to show we are civilized people, not jeets. We were never turned away nor had a single bad encounter.

It was relatively nice in that pic in 2015.

If it was 2 days from the west near Tanabe, the Nakahechi, if it was 5 days starting from around Koya-san, the Kohechi. Other trails aren't really preserved (like the Iseji) so those are mostly walking along actual roads.

>>275316141
The countryside is lovely, unfortunately Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka are fucking owari da post-COVID, tourism numbers have gotten retarded from 10 million a year a decade ago to like 33 million a year now.

Hokkaido and the central alps definitely have a Swiss flair at least nature-wise though, with the benefit of a slice of bread not costing 10 fucking Euros also.

If he's just going to be in Osaka, the city sights proper can be knocked out in a couple of days. Rest will be temple daytrips to Kyoto/Nara/Ise, and nature, maybe some onsening at Arima/Kinosaki, and Himeji/Kobe.
>nor does he care for nature
>not the usual temple/tourist stuff
He's chosen the wrong country, if it wants modern boredom/clubshit just tell him to not even bother leaving Namba or shove him to Tokyo and contain him to Roppongi/Shinjuku/Kabukicho then.

Fuck I hate my fellow Australians more than Chinks almost, unfortunately >>275316264 has some truth to it, (though the main difference is Bali-bogans don't flood tour sites en-masse like Chinks at least so generally not as much of an issue, plus the far smaller population to start with making them less omnipresent than Chinks).

Just the nigger touts one needs to beware of, especially if one is retarded enough to actually enter one, get drunk, and get slammed with a ridiculous $1000 bill for a few bottles of some shit (if they don't just nig your wallet from your pocket while drunk anyway).

Also on the topic of hiking, if anyone wants to hike Fuji (not that it's fun anymore with the crowds anyway), do it from the bottom. Won't see a single soul for hours most likely till you get to the fifth station, and can see the abandoned ruins along the way of the old ones. Well Tokyo hotels maybe are getting overpriced unfortunately in recent times, but as it's the shittiest place in the entire country could be worse.

Or, with a JR pass, save money by taking night trains~ of which only the Sunrise Seto/Izumo runs daily now unfortunately, fug I miss the Hamanasu for overnight access to Hokkaido, saved so much time compared to sitting on the Hokuto for half a day.

Ah, fuck. The countryside, i.e. nature and some of these cozy towns in bumfuck nowhere would be fun, too. Especially if they're half as cozy as they're being portrayed (which, from the pictures, they seem to be).
But then, as a gaijin, you're kind of screwed if you wanna go there? Great.

Don't get me wrong, yes crowds suck in some locations (e.g. Asakusa, Kiyomizu, and Kinkakuji off the top of my heads are probably the three worst places for them in the country), but it's mostly a Kyoto/Tokyo problem. And you can still work around them by going to places early or at night where possible (e.g. a Fushimi Inari night climb is honestly much more atmospheric than during the day, and 6 years ago at least the place was still almost abandoned after dark).

>But then, as a gaijin, you're kind of screwed if you wanna go there? Great.
Plenty of EOP tourists do it just fine, though yes not being a Dekinai definitely makes it more enjoyable. Just spend a few months doing Genki I + II to get basic everyday conversational down, ganbare anon-chama!

Can confirm. I went Christmas 2023 and it was a nightmare because of the crowd but the higher up I got and the darker it got the more fun I had.
When at crowded locations it's important to just move along and try to step aside at spots that are off the main path 90% of people won't pay attention to. Just discovering stuff off the main road is fun in itself and you get away from the crowd.

Out-of-hours for basically any popular Shinto shrine as most do not really 'close' as such (just the gift shop/omamori windows close up).

For most popular sites with actual opening hours though, getting in right away at 7 AM or whatever usually gives one an hour of peace at least though before the Chinkbuses arrive.

Also, summer and winter touring. Yes, it's hot and humid and sweaty (basically just the same as Brisbane though so I don't mind) or painfully cold, but at least you avoid the Spring/Autumn peaks. E.g. Kyoto in January/February is a bit uglier with bare trees and no real nice snow to compensate either, but that also really thins out the herd as most tourists will be in Hokkaido or at the ski fields during that time.

They all have stalls selling the exact same overpriced potato snacks/karaage/taiyaki/kids games/masks, sure. Those get boring after the second time seeing them.

The actual festivals themselves are often quite fun though. Osaka's various Danjiri festivals are probably a personal favourite, or Sapporo's snow festival, or the Aomori Neputa, or Nara's Yamayaki where the madlads light an entire mountain on fire.

The Otori one is decently big but not the biggest so it's a safe bet (still busy though). Usually held in early October. The JNTO publishes monthly lists for festivals around the place that is actually surprisingly comprehensive for the mid-sized and above events: https://www.japan.travel/brochures/eng/index.php?publisher[]=1&jnto_category[]=102

As they only publish for the current month at the start of it though, best to look at last year's, find the event, then jewgle it to find the current year's exact date as it may shift.

I live in Japan and part of my job is to show foreigners around actually. The first year or so I was obsessed with going on seichi junrei and made it to dozens of spots, but since then I haven't been on as many, which is a shame. I should get out more, but for the most part I only visit Akiba or Nipponbashi to shop now. I will say if you can completely navigate Shinjuku station without your phone, you can get around anywhere in Japan, except for Osaka/Umeda, that absolute mess.
If anyone's planning on coming soon I can give recommendations on where to go/eat at least. I have at least 100 ramen shops bookmarked across the country.

>unfortunately Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka are fucking owari da post-COVID, tourism numbers have gotten retarded from 10 million a year a decade ago to like 33 million a year now.
Well, there are still lovely places just outside the major tourist spots.
When i was in Kyoto in 2023, i visited a smaller shrine near the Tofukuji temple which wasn't a typical destination for tourists, and i had the place all for myself. Nothing special, aside from the 1000 year old sacred tree there, but i like the atmosphere of those places.
Of course, in places like those it is always good if you know at least basic Japanese (wouldn't say mine is good, but it was enough).

In the case of those grey and white herons you posted, i see those guys on our fields here in Germany on a regular base.
I was far more impressed (and to a degree scared) by the insects and spiders in Japan. The first time a Japanese hornet passes close to your head is definately something else, and so is your first contact with a Joro spider if you have arachnophobia. (tankfully it just chilled in its net outside, but the size plus the fact that dozens of those guys occupied every tree down the street wasn't exactly calming).

I went to Kyoto during last sakura season. I stayed by the university, avoided the tourist-drenched big ticket attractions, and still found plenty of nice places with barely any people.

The thing about tourists is that they only really know what's in blogs and guidebooks. A little extra knowledge-and willingness to do some extra walking can go a long way.

eh there are lots of weird people in Japan and plenty of normalfags outweighing them, I'm more worried about whatever delusions you have about the Japanese that you makes you so afraid of acting "improper" or whatever.

The only Japanese people that have that a reaction vaguely like that are the ones that have to work with foreign otaku (language teachers) or deliberately seek out information about them, otherwise it simply doesn't have much presence in their lives.

Actually it's a pretty nice area, if you've got the day there. And while trains to Toyosato are infrequent (Omie-honsen, run a private company in Shiga) once you get back to JR's Biwako-line you will see trains just about every fifteen minutes. In fact, the station where the Omie-honsen starts in the north, Hikone, is home to one of the 5 extant Japanese castles to be registered as a national treasure. I recommend a visit, if you get another chance. I wouldn't overlook Omie beef as well, outside Japan not as famous as Kobe beef, but inside the country it's a delicacy.
On the other side of Biwa there's an onsen, and a few beautiful temples and shrines, like Shirahige jinja, where I took >>275323117.
And travel to other hotspots isn't bad either. Running through the JR Biwako line every 30 minutes or so is a special Rapid Express that hits Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, and even Himeji, in just an hour or two depending on your stop. And it's incredibly cheap.

>>
>>275348464
Tokyo has the second highest foreign population by percentage, just behind Osaka. It's small compared to other countries but massive compared to the rest of Japan.
And I never said there was anything wrong with it, I just thought it was stupid to say they only kept around the big hubs because where I live I go days to a week without seeing any foreigners (despite living in a densely populated area) but Tokyo no matter where I go they're always a few.

Yes, Tokyo has more foreigners than some random town in Kouchi. Thanks for stating the obvious.
>>
>>275348606
Near 0. Just don't follow the touts.
>>
>>275348666
People are, but I'm not. You said something completely untrue and I thought it was dumb and pointed it out. And there are many designated cities with a tiny fraction of the foreigner population compared to Tokyo, I'm not talking about small towns.
>>
>>275348606
Just don't walk in the middle of the road
>>
>>275348696
It is completely true that you most likely won't see a foreigner if you get off at a random residential station in Tokyo. You can probably find one if you look around for a while. There isn't a single foreigner I interact with in my daily life, and I don't live far from the city. The amount of foreigners in Tokyo could increase tenfold and it still would not be significant enough to change anything about the experience of living here.
I'm addressing the retards that think Tokyo is some lost city taken over by foreigners. Why are you arguing against this obviously true point? With completely unrelated statistics and while omitting the only statistic that would help your case, namely the ACTUAL population percentage and not a vague relative one?
>And there are many designated cities with a tiny fraction of the foreigner population compared to Tokyo
Yes, obviously.
>>
>>275348821
>Why are you arguing against
I'm not and the fact that you still think I am despite my repeated attempts to explain to you what I am actually talking about makes me think there's no point in replying to you further. You said tell you where the foreigners are and I did - Shinjuku, Edogawa, Adachi. This is factually true.

Not him, but saw all three without knowing there's a manga for it till now. Itsukushima is probably the best just for the other things to do on Miyajima, but I haven't dared to visit for 10 years now as it's probably drowning in tourists today.

Amanohashidate is just a sandbar/park to walk across, nice enough view sure. Matsushima is probably more interesting than it though because again other things to do in the area. And not too crowded comparitively (or at least it wasn't 8 or so years ago again...).

At least for Hongkong that is zero problem.
That is if you book it all in one. If you "travel hack" (retard move) and book two completely separate flights (EU->Hongkong and then Hongkong->JP) you will have to go through immigration. Just book EU->JP and then it should not matter at all which airports you pass through, otherwise that would be so much trouble and bad PR for the carriers if retard boomers that don't do research would be stuck everywhere.
As a former quadrupple-check-everything autist here I can now say that air travel just works.

As for speaking JP just know that 99% percent of people speak zero(ZERO) english and prepare. Learn Hello, goodbye, thanks, how to order/pay and how to ask for taxi/train station.
I had a few 60-70 years old small restaurant owners in rural areas that seemed genuinely touched that some gaijin would say gochisousama deshita after the (very good) meal. But in general just use the translator app and accept being dekinai.
>>
>>275350577
You too, huh.
>>275350892
Different guy here, I would say Matsushima is way better Amanohashidate. Easier access, more stuff today, way less crowded.
>>
>>275351010
It’s kind of a separate day trip
Normally there would be three (I think) ferry boats that go to the little island, so it’s more accessible day round, but I couldn’t go to it because the last boat was full since one of them was under repair
My plan was go there from Sendai really early, like 7am early, train there until 8 and bus to the ferry at 830. But even then the boat was full at the time. It is an hour to go there, but the island is big enough to walk around and make it back to the train station around 1pm, and I was thinking to do Matsushima on the way back. But since I couldn’t go, I hanged around and took a train back to Matsushima, walk aimlessly and then go back to Sendai.
What I’m saying is that maybe the boats are fixed and you could do two things in one day

Guess it depends on field/speciality and if it's something in demand like electrical engineers or something rare~, but for generic IT administration or the like, I doubt most would offer visas to foreigners considering the general worldwide oversupply + infinite jeetstream of IT graduates blowing in from the west.

Sorry was calculating in Australian funbux, so about $6k BurgerBucks for a 3 week or so holiday (flights, 100k yen JR pass, few days of rental caring, entry fees, accommodation including a few nights at fancy onsen, etc) which I'd say would more or less cover a comfy trip. Can go a bit rougher with more capsule hotels/hostels/etc and maybe take $2k off that.

That "not responsible for transfer" shit is only when you book a self-transfer flight, which might be cheaper but if you haven't flown before I wouldn't recommend it. As long as you don't leave the terminals, you don't need to care about visas for the stops, only in your destination country. Like the other Anon said, short-term tourism doesn't require squat for most nationalities.

Two-way flights from Europe with 1 stop (probably in the carrier's home airport) should go around 1.3k euro or thereabouts if you book a few months prior.

It really depends on the city and region. Tokyo's slightly cleaner than your average western large cities, Osaka is just as dirty if not more so, Kyoto's clean outside of the tourist area, Sapporo's really clean, Sendai's clean but small, and so on.
>>275352147
It's about the same from my experience. You just have a higher chance of running into nips that can speak English in Hokkaido.

Yes, except Tokyo (though it too was spotless until recently) because of the influx of jeets and SEAmonkeys there. So depressing stepping out of Nippori station the other year and seeing trash (both human and normal litter) on the street corners, with even the konbini being staffed by Nepalese or Filipinos or something with katakana nametags that talk to me in English first because they're probably N3.

Tokyo/Kyotoites already historically had a reputation for being a bit brusque (not Osaka though), doubtlessly amplified due to the overtourism in those cities however.

It depends as usual, but many cities ban smoking outside of specified zones so the usual cigarette butt laden scenes can be ruled out. Even in cities which don't do that it isn't as bad compared to Europe. There's a street corner around where I live where the trash bags tend to be scattered sometimes, whether that's due to negligence or birds I dunno, but overall it seems cleaner.

If you don't move around a lot and don't have too many fancy nights/throw in some hostels, yeah you can do it on a shoestring budget (and sharing rooms will shave 30-40% off accommodation costs usually also yes). However inflation is quickly rearing its hook-nosed head even in Japan of late.

Can confirm that winter Hokkaido/Tohoku is a great time to visit. The main limiting factor for Hokkaido is that you'll need a car to get to anywhere interesting outside the city since the bus service's very spotty in winter and the train system's very limited up there.

It's a nice trail no matter which, but the Kohechi definitely felt a bit more raw probably just because of the length (think it's normally 4 days but I made it 5 by starting from the bottom of Koyasan and sleeping a night on it). Plus I don't think the Nakahechi had that far-view of the giant torii IIRC (maybe it did). Coming over the peak and seeing it after 5 full days of hiking was a tokubetsu kimochi.

Yeah but it's seasonal running only 2 - 4 times a week or so, and the destination varies. I abused it with the JR pass last November by riding it between Kyoto and Shimonoseki 4 times though. Need to 10-ji-uchi it though the couchettes sell out in <30 seconds of going on sale fucking madness.

Shieeeet, I would've done it in the past for fun, but after slipping on black ice on Sapporo's streets a couple years ago and concussing myself into 2 hours of memory loss which wasn't scary then in the haze but terrifying after, I'll probably avoid it to be hontou kazoku.

Showing respect for others is something I don't reserve solely for the Japanese, nor is it based on delusions. I'm sure some do. Sometimes there are volcanic eruption shelters (though don't recall seeing them on Fuji of all places oddly enough), but otherwise 'huddle in your jacket and wait for sunrise like the underprepared baka you are' seems to be the attitude. Shou ga nai~

Oh they are there, didn't notice them but assume it's not really for general 'it's cold wet and windy and my feet hurt' entry then yeah.

Are you really having fun in the outdoors if your life isn't in danger? Carrying a katana in the wilderness would make everything a million times better degozaru. I hate the meiji restoration!

>Have you ever traveled to Japan to visit places that are related to your favorite manga or anime?
Kinda many but we're over the bump limit so I can't be assed to post pictures or anything
Protip just visit Enoshima, literally every anime visits there at some point so you can cross like thousands of anime out of the list

Literally you, you just think you're different because your skin is whiter
>>
>>275354675
That literally is what I'm talking about. You can't even get a cot at those shelters after they open reservations in April (travel companies book like 30 at a time in advance)

>went through a shantytown looking place in day
>dark woods, abandoned houses, tarp everywhere
>felt like I was going to get eaten
>see a sign
>said forest of adventure
>just speed walking dark trails and strange noises just at sundown
The whole abandoned Japan areas are really true, and the sense of death makes it more memorable. Fell my balls hanging below my knees when it happens

Nah, I think I'm different because I actively avoid such overtoured spots, and don't travel in massive fagtour groups of 50 in the first place, Jeet-san (and also because I don't shit on the street). Again I'd never climb Fuji today with the current numbers there.

Thankfully there's infinite peaks there again so plenty of others to choose from still, pic related in the Kirishima mountains 2 months ago.

>whiter
No need to be jealous now.

>Reservations for emergency shelters
Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of an emergency, last resort shelter?
>>
>>275316675
When I opened this thread I didn't expect to see mostly rural/historical sites being posted. Isn't the point of going to Japan as an anime fan to immerse yourself in the urban culture?

No, reservations for overnight huts. The emergency shelters are only for eruptions or the like on such mountains though, not because you're going to catch a cold because it's pouring rain and you want to wait it out.

The point of anime tourism is to visit anime locations, hope this helps

The thread is 95% off-topic but it's still a nice thread considering the catalogue is only a range of different general flavors (spic, necrobump, porn).

Also huh didn't know the Oura Cathedral was an animu thing, don't read/watch Fateshit sorry, was a lot dirtier in 2015 though.

Kinda sucks I missed the entire thread, maybe I'll catch one of these in the future. Really makes me want to get back out there and travel.
My greatest anime pilgrimage still has to probably me Cuenca for SnW but that's outside the scope of the thread lmao

I accidentally ended up getting dinner at that balcony in the bottom right of your picture. Maybe the best seats in town by pure luck.

Would be less off topic than all this immigration discussion

Last time I was in nibbon did some Uchouten Kazoku locations in Kyoto and Patlabor in Tokyo (visited Gate Bridge etc). I don't have the pics on me and transferring them would take time so just imagine one of the most majestic bridges you've ever seen. Planes passed overhead so low that you could read their tail numbers, and underneath was a surprisingly comfy fishing area where people had fished long into the night and had barbeques, surprised at gaijins; Tokyo waterfront skyline over the sea.

Man, I wish I was smart/rich enough to be able to live somewhere beautiful like this. Being stuck in the ass end of Ohio sucks.

Why the fuck are they putting out uchouten 10th anniversary promo materials? Not like there's anything new on the horizon. (Though there was a live action play on last year).
