If you're eating Japanese food outside of Japan and maybe some select big cities, make sure you cook it yourself with authentic ingredients and recipes. There's like half a dozen ramen shops in my city and each and every one sells watery garbage. Sushi is the exception because even shit sushi is still going to taste fine(well, you can still fuck it up, my first time eating "sushi" was like 20 years ago when there were no sushi restaurants in my city, so some of my parents' friends decided to make some. Only they didn't hear that you're supposed to season the rice, like at all. That was an experience.)

I don't think I've tried anything beause of a specific anime (apart from >>275356104 ) but I've tried making sushi, inari zushi, okonomiyaki, oyakodon, omurice, onigiri and a variant of it called onigirazu, and various bastardized versions of yakisoba. It's bretty good.

It tasted about how I'd expect a big ball of slightly seasoned rice to taste but i could definitely see why it makes a good quick snack. Japanese curry was interesting, I mixed a couple of varieties of the boxed stuff, I think Java and Tasty Curry. It was definitely on the sweeter side and not something I'd prefer over more Indian style curries but not bad.
