Chapter 35: The Truth of the Northern Territory Negotiations (Part One)
Previous chapter:>>281898246
>FinalA shame, really.
>>281924576ANY DAY NOW LADS
Done. This is, without a doubt, one of the most bizarre manga I've ever read, not in outlandishness, but in its very existence. I'm very glad I decided to dump it. There are still 2 whole untranslated volumes, so look forward for that in the future, while you mull this cliffhanger. . Did (you) like this manga?See you tomorrow!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNb54rwDQJM
Tomorrow we return to our more usual Ito fare, but I'll post a bonus today, since it's too short for a regular thread:Junji's Slice of Life Diary: A Diary of Embellished Patches (originally published in 2012)Story 1: Pond
Story 2: Conversation
Story 3: DIY Instructions
Done. Tomorrow: Dissolving Classroom
>>281924560Finally, the truth!
>>281924946Yeah, it was pretty interesting. Ito did one hell of a job with the expressions in this one. >>281925085something something all dailies are connected etc etc>>281925116See you tomorrow.
>>281924590Spoiler: It was not near
>>281924555Here we are
>>281924690>Never my faultHere we fucking go again
>>281925172next year for sure
>>281924673Don't you fucking Dreamworks face me with your platitudes
>>281924703These islands cannot be that big a fucking deal
>>281924892Bahahahahahahaha he actually believed that didn't he?
>>281924769Wow Yuki, you're like Jesus or something Even the prosecutor is in awe
>>281924795What the fuck is this manga man
>>281924946>Did (you) like this manga? It insisted upon itself. Honestly, it dragged on for too long. There's only so many times you can read some out of his depth loon tell you "I was right, everyone else was wrong. If they'd listened to me the Northern territories, Manchukuo, AND The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere would have been returned to us right now" before it becomes tiresome.>>281925007Ah, back to our usual programming>>281925016>DiplomatGOD FUCKING DAMMIT NOT AGAIN!
>>281924823Ito should have adapted The Sea of Fertility instead of this
>>281925016Finally he draws him accurately.
>>281924845Why's Putin making that face
>>281925500Why did Yukio Mishima look so much like Camus?
>>281924690Oh, here we go again.
>>281924879Are the Northern Territories like Kosovo to the japs or something
>>281924946It was pretty outlandish as well. All in all definitely a favourite.
>>281924916>hit the TL wall NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
>>281924946Thanks OP Like you said, there was something really fucking weird about this whole thing, which is why I enjoyed it. But weirdness aside, I found some of the political stuff pretty engaging
>>281925536It’s his sexy face.
>>281924845>bro just 10 more years and few million more yen, just trust me bro we’ll get those islands back, just 15 more years and a few hundred million more yenI’m getting tired of this same old routine Yuki
>>281925320If I’ve learned anything from this story it’s that Yuki will believe anything at face value unless someone with more common sense tells him he’s being lied to.
>>281924946I'll miss reading about Yuki's totally true and not at all embellished wacky adventures. Thanks for dumping, OP.
>>281925581It honestly strikes me as one of those issues that every country has where: a small minority couldn't care less, a small minority consider it in the top 5 most important things that will Make [COUNTRY] Great Again (tm)! And the vast majority don't really care either way. Which makes it a perfect thing for fringe politics because you can bandy it about that you have a secret plan to get back [X] if elected, and the opposition are shameless cowards who'd sacrifice [Y] like they sacrificed [X]! Without actually having any plan to do so because it's not an election winner.
>>281924960Has Ito gone grey since losing Yon and Mu or did he get a bleached bowlcut
>>281924974Is that fucking Yuki
>>281924946Thanks a lot OP, this was a fascinating read, very different from the usual fare. I read up on the case, Sato got a relatively light suspended sentence, but I think his solitary confinement for over 500 days was cruel. He found success as a writer afterwards so things mostly worked out for him. His boss did go to prison though. As much of a true believer as he makes himself out to be for Japan’s national interests I think he’s a regular political crook. So of course he got back into the Diet after spending two years in prison.
>>281925007Feels good to be back
>>281925016Being a former what
>>281925033Wait is it actually him
>>281924661>top left panelWhat a smug look.>>281924879I bet Takamura is still calling Yuki every day to ask him this.
>>281925046So Ito really does believe in him that much
>>281925057Comedy mangaka
>>281926053Ito’s a nationalist.
>>281925900>As much of a true believer as he makes himself out to be for Japan’s national interests I think he’s a regular political crook. He is very much a true believer. He threw full support behind Russia in the Ukrainian war and was kicked out of the party and the Diet for that. He then joined another party and got reelected anyway.
>>281925099What a good father
>>281925998See >>281925534
>>281926053Ito isn't a complicated man.
>>281926091>Claims to be a true believer in Japan>Throws his full support behind the country that won't return his country's territoryThere's another word I'd use to describe someone like that, starts with T ends with a short drop.
>>281925116Thanks OP, again
>>281924845zesty putin jumpscare
>>281925320They were just two weeks away!
>>281924974Our heroes Yuki and Takamura.
>>281926252Trust the plan!
>>281926201...did you actually read this manga?
>>281924902It was Putin's fault, wasn't it?
>>281924946Thanks OP. This has been fun. Politics in fictional media tend to be played fairly straight or overly humorous in the name of parody or satire, so it was somewhat refreshing to see something that managed to capture something in between. The exaggerated emotional expressions and the humorous depictions of certain moments is not often something you'd see in the former even if certainly in the latter.
>>281925558That's just what happens when you speak French
>>281926219>>281926284
>>281924946It's great to see that Ito drawing quite different faces instead of his usual go-to ones. Adapting what is, as I see it, a self-serving biography isn't easy on the adapter either and so we got some nice Itoisms along the way. Be careful not to go near that open window, OP!
>>281926274Based retard
>>281924721>stalini miss him
>>281926701He truly was based
>>281924555So are there any English physical copies of this series available or do you have to scour the internet for scanlations? Isnt this like a decade old?
Maybe someday...we'll see them again...
where's my nigga mo?
>>281926963Taken by the spiral
>>281924845Putin serving
>>281925536Maybe his bu
>>281925007Second panel on the top right would make a great banner
>>281924946>one of the most bizarre manga I've ever read, not in outlandishness, but in its very existenceyou hit the nail in the head. what possessed Ito to make this, the kamikaze spirit? Jesus.
>>281924946Thank you, I liked it and I've gotten invested in the northern territories, I'm sure there's some gold in there. It's unfortunate that the rest is untranslated right when we're reaching the crux of the story. As a usual NHK World Japan watcher, I always found it strange how the normally zen channel suddenly went UKRAINE UKRAINE UKRAINE, RUSSIA BAD when the war started. The bad blood between the two countries is deeper than you'd think as an outsider.
>>281926363horror manga
>>281925033Sato wanted Ito to adapt an entirely different book.
>>281924946This was not something I'd have picked up myself, but a pretty interesting story. Shame that the translation hasn't been completed.
>>281926963Mount Isa
>>281926701>>281926771have fun shitposting from gulag
>>281926363Maybe Japan can get the Northern Territories back if they give Putin lot of bananas
>>281928031>wait, you adapted my cringy hero fantasy that I wrote while on jail? I thought you were gonna adapt my urban fantasy saga!
>>281924946Wait, that's it?That's where it ends?
>>281924845nice face there, Putin
>>281928768No, there's two more volumes that still haven't been translated.
>>281924560>Flight>Laser eyes>Spirit mediumWhy didn't Yuki just break out of prison with his abilities? Just how strong are the guards meant to be? I need some sort of tier list to understand these feats.
>>281924946I enjoyed it but I started enjoying it a lot less when I found out it was actually autobiographical
>>281924946Thanks for posting it. I enjoyed it. I liked the interactions between Yuki and Takamura and Yuki and some other characters. I wish it was fictional, though, and not based on real people (the real Yuki and Tsuzuki). I'm not sure how I feel about those two and that kind of taints the characters in the manga. Still enjoyed it quite a bit.
>>281924946>Did (you) like this manga? It's been a novelty to say the least. I've mentioned that it feels like a disconnect between the alleged hardship of imprisonment and intense psychological combat of the interrogation that the manga claims Yuki is enduring nobly versus what's actually depicted. I'm not sure how much I want to attribute to Sato trying to make himself look good in his own memoirs; or if the manga adaptation just cut things down a lot things for the sake of brevity and simplification. It wouldn't surprise me if the original was a lot more in depth and complex but that would've been very dry and not good for manga.
>>281925829He's thinking of going gyaru
>>281925033>>281925046Had this one been posted before, or was there another time that Ito was meeting with someone who's work he would be adapting but hadn't read yet that I'm thinking of?
>>281927357>The bad blood between the two countries is deeper than you'd think as an outsider.I mean, it's not like there isn't a historical precedent.
>>281924946Thanks OP>Did (you) like this manga?Yes, one day they will have the Northern Territories back
>>281929323>Blonde, tanned Ito wearing slutty clothes
>>281924673
>these strategically irrelevant rocks in the middle of nowhere are actual vital for our national interest
>>281929817don't you EVER talk about the SACRED northern territories like that again
>>281929997
>>281924560>That scenery
>>281924673He-he's defending us!
>>281924946Thanks anon>Did (you) like this manga? It's interesting, but I didn't expect this kind of manga from ito
>>281924879Who hasn't asked that question to themselves at least once since we started reading this.
>>281924902Who's fucking fault!?!?!?!?!?!??!?
>>281924946Thanks OP. >Did (you) like this manga?Does Yuki not desire the Northern Territories?

>>281926963Got lost in the Northern Territories.
>>281924946Honestly, I wasn't sold on this at first, but I really enjoyed it.I was really rooting for Japan to get the northern territories...
>>281924611ざわ・・ ざわ・・

>>281930030Does he even want to indict Yuki anymore
>>281933238>>tfw a hobo and a young lady fly pastheh
>>281933425He mostly just wants to save face now that he knows he's not getting anything worthwhile out of this whole Mineo ordeal

>>281924845>What's the matter Yuki-kun?>Could you be craving, my Southern Kuril Islands?
>>281924845kek
>>281924946thanks, I only read the last few chapters but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I'll probably go back and read from the beginning when/if the whole thing is translated.
>>281925116Thank you for posting, OP. It was a strange ride in a good way.
>>281925500that would've been a doozie
The wrtiter of Rasputin the Patriot also wrote a manga called Kurokoch about a corrupt police inspector who use the power of corruption to resolve crimes. This manga is underrated as fuck and is full of conspiracy theories about real unsolved cases.
I think will should think more abiut the Western Territories (Korea), they are more important
>>281924992D-Dragonfly pond?
>>281940963I think they’ve suffered enough.
>>281924946I read it to the end and it was an interesting experience, although Yuki never said what exactly the territorial negotiations came to. I wonder how many Japanese read his story and how they treat him
>>281940963no, the Eastern Territories (Kantō plain inhabited by the Emishi barbarians) are more important
>>281942742His book was a best-seller and he is widely viewed in good standing. As for the territorial negotiations why don't you look at the most recent maps for the region?
>>281924946>Did (you) like this manga?honestly? no. the topic doesn't intersst me and the MC is kind of an asshole. i only hope ito got paid handsomely for this
>>281943334Ito paid into Yuki's Northern Territories recovery fund for the honour of adapting his book
Hoppo Ryodo
>>281924946>There are still 2 whole untranslated volumes, so look forward for that in the future, while you mull this cliffhangeOHHH, okay that makes sense. Felt like a very jarring ending.
>>281924946Thanks for dumping! I do agree, it's a different type of story. I probably wouldn't read it again, but I enjoyed branching out and trying a new story. Just felt very inconsistent. Like some chapters, like with black cat guy or the prosecutor chapters, it was pretty engaging. Although a lot of the chapters got lost-in-the-weeds with political historyOverall: 5.5/10, excited to see how it ends (and no, I won't Wikipedia the case it was based off of).
>>281924946you made me discover Ito and I'm so grateful for that, every story is entertaining and well drawn and full of surprisesthat whole Rasputin story is definitely my favorite, I wish we had the last two volumes to enjoy togetherTHANKS OP IT WAS SO GOOD
>>281946411You'd never heard of Junji Ito before this?

Meanwhile in Russia, they actually created Tomie the tank.

>>281957384It's really funny that he's still drawing his wife like that even after she complained. Insight into relationship dynamics.
>>281957472I assumed she was complaining more about the cheek lines (which in fairness did make her look twenty or so years older)
