Alright, it is Saturday and I am gonna post the thirty-eighth volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is 境界のRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Previous thread: >>282345129

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

Zwoop instead of their usual Zooom. I feel like it can't be that hard to consistently localize it. I guess new localizers aren't even aware it is a running gag...
>>
>>282421392
Found him.
>>
>>282421407
Animal spirit was not an unusual term and was translated directly for the localization: 動物霊 (dōbutsu rei).
>>
>>282421460
It's a struggle.
>>
>>282421474
VIZ did pretty good here. The original line in Japanese was 捨てられたにゃ (sute rareta nya~) or "abandoned meow~".

You get the idea. These all have nya in them.
>>
>>282421636
Oh, I didn't mention the nekomata plug 猫又プラグ (nekomata puragu). We've seen this tool before and it is translated pretty directly. As for the revolving lantern, here's my usual note on the topic. 走馬灯 (sōmatō) is the term for revolving lantern. We've discussed this before so here's my note from then. According to a quick Google (showing a cultural note by the Japanese Wiki which is a translated section of Japanese Wikipedia, it seems), it is a kind of garden lantern which is crafted to show a revolving shadow picture with its inside and outside frames.

They also note that: "Recently, somato has come to be used in words to describe the flashback of one's lifetime memory, such as somato phenomenon (a flashback phenomenon) and somato experience (a flashback experience), which is said to be experienced by a dying person — or which a near-death experiencer says h (or she) saw. It becomes rare for the public to see the real somato, so the word somato is often misunderstood to indicate the phenomenon itself."

身辺整理 (shinpen seiri) was the original title. Means what VIZ translated it as, I just found it interesting.

Oh, reminder for those who don't know, Ageha's sister had no name for ages but was always referred to as 美人秘書 (bijin hisho). Then it turns out her name is actually Bijin. How droll. Anyway, Rumiko actually fielded a question about this in 2018 interview regarding Rin-ne.

"...
[Q:] To tell you the truth, I laughed when it was revealed that her real name was “Beauty”.

Takahashi: ... Regarding Bijin’s name, I was determined to give her a different one since she showed up, but it remained unchanged... I decided when she was introduced in a chapter that it would stay that way."

I'll be honest, Furinkan's translation here is a little confusing. I don't know when she decided to just have her name be Bijin, but yeah, she did plan on thinking of a different name before settling on the gag that pays off hundreds of chapters later.
>>
>>282422398
Anoyo Hotel was written with English characters in the original manga as well. Anoyo being あの世, meaning "the other world" and referring to the afterlife.
>>
>>282422435
Sugar mama was 金ヅル (kin dzuru). It means golden crane and refers to a financial supporter or source of revenue.
>>
>>282422510
Hehehe. He's not exactly the faithful type from what we've seen.

>>
>>282422615
What?
>>
>>282422739
I don't know if the localizers realized when Sabato said 美人くん (Bijin-kun), he was referring to her by name. Anyway, I guess he broke relatively even with most of his dates? Obviously, not always since Kain's family was driven to poverty by the man.
>>
>>282422818
>>
>>282422857
The IC DEBIT CARD (ICキャッシュカードのご利用) and AFTERLIFE BANK (阿世銀行) was redrawn. They also removed the U from Rokudou, since VIZ went with Rokudo originally.
>>
>>282422818
What a ladies' man!
>>
>>282423192
VIZ was pretty loose with the translation here, since they didn't want to include a cultural note and the idea is conveyed alright even if it makes the image seem a bit bizarre. Anyway, Sabato referred to them as あしながおじさん (ashinaga ojisan) which can refer to daddy long-legs (ie. the insect) or "the anonymous scholarship system for orphans whose parents have been killed in traffic accidents (from Daddy-Long-Legs, a 1912 novel by Jean Webster)". This unusual illustration appears to be based on a common cover for this novel. The caption of the illustration says おじさんのイメージです (ojisan no imējidesu), ie. "this is an image of Daddy".

Apparently, the 1912 novel was very popular in Japan because it places a lot of importance on respecting the elderly and education. Anyway, Furinkan should've included a note. But I had to find this out myself. Don't say I don't do anything.
>>
>>282423454
Bijin-kun again.

End of chapter. So, there you go. His economy's propped up by old money. Bijin can enjoy herself without too much guilt. Also, a little late for the bad behavior thing...
>>
Original title is 語る声 (kataru koe). Telling is fine, but it seems 語る seems to more commonly refer to narrating or telling a story. Oh and this cover was originally in full color.

Pimp here was the ever versatile ヒモ (himo, meaning string or man financially dependent on a woman or pimp). So, it could be implying she's paying for him rather than the other way around. Oh and beats me was 知らねえよっ! (shiranē yo~tsu!), ie. "I don't know!" or "No clue!" or "Beats me!" but it wasn't setting up an abuse joke is my point. Hiroshi was written as ヒロシ and it is a common name.

さっさと出せ (sassato dase) was "spit it out" and it means "get it out now" or "hand it over". The parenthetical was in the original.

Sign was redrawn. Also, it was 60 cm (written in English) for the length. モモちゃん (momo-chan). The name means peach.

Also, not sure what happened with the first line of the poster. It was 捜しています (I am looking for). As far as I can tell, there isn't a shop name on the rest of the poster either.

End of chapter. Goodbye, Momo-chan. Rinne's line in Japanese was 微妙だ (bimyōda) and appears to be referring to the taste. It usually means "not great" or "a bit off" in this context.
>>
Anju. They made her hair pinkish-blonde in the anime, so it was a bit odd seeing her with very blue hair on the volume cover. I did my usual interpretation and saw it as completely white, which I feel would also work for her.

The name of the lake was localized. It was ときめき湖 (tokimeki mizūmi). Not quite Doki Doki Lake. ときめき does refer to the beating of the heart, palpitation, throbbing, pounding, fluttering, etc. Red Bride was also translated from 赤い花嫁 (Akai Hanayome) which just means Red Bride.

Sakura Mamiya was being more vague in the original, which I assume was how the line was intended. To refer to both of them and maybe the atmosphere in general. あらキレイ(ara kirei) or "Oh, beautiful!" or "Oh, how lovely!".

>>
>>282424805
Oh, been a while since we've seen this thing. In chapter 26, VIZ went with "Beacon of Truth" for this thing, but here, they went with something more direct. 白日灯 (hakujitsu-tō) was the term used here and it seems to just mean "daylight lamp".

霊障增幅煙筒 (rei sawa zō haba kemuri tsutsu) or "spiritual obstruction increasing smoke bomb", I guess. I feel like this was a deliberately complex term being used here. The raws I have did not have clear enough furigana, so I tried my best with the Romanji, but Google wasn't playing nice and was giving me a mix of Chinese and Japanese again.

The goofy narration in the bottom left referred to 霊よけスプレー (rei yo ke supurē) or spirit repellant spray. Or maybe repelled spirits using spray. I don't know Japanese.

You may notice the hive looks more like a wasp's nest than a normal beehive. Japanese uses the same term for both ハチの巣 (hachinosu) since hachi is a general term that refers to both. ハチコロリ (hachikorori). Korori is apparently the sound of something being done easily, so I guess it is used in this context. Bee-B-Gone is good. I don't know how this vending machine fits into the scam.

Heartless, but it worked. Refuto's line here was not his usual insult, he called him a 鬼 (oni). Here's the full line in case you're curious. 鼻歌歌いながら鬼かおのれはーっ! (Hanauta utainagara oni ka onore wa ̄ ~tsu!) It seems to have lost some nuance in translation, but since I don't know Japanese, I'm not sure. Googling it, it seems おのれ is an old-fashioned exclamation meaning "you!" essentially, a way to angrily shout at someone.

It is summer, so we get some pool and beach stuff! Original title is プールの落とし物 (pūru no otoshimono). 落とし物 refers to lost property or lost items, but it literally refers to the item being dropped. So, VIZ decided to go with this.

>Ah, well, I did see the other definition included for the term, so I added it. But I guess they have their own term for it too.
i was curious because "daddy long legs" is such a peculiar name that i couldn't believe that ashinaga ojison was an organic name coined by the japanese and wondered if it was something influenced by contact with american soldiers
yuureigumo is a fun bit of coincidence when you consider what rin-ne is about though hehe

It doesn't seem like Shoma is referencing a specific product here, but I'll post his entire first line here if you're curious 霊のこだわり物件再現バルーン。 (rei no kodawari bukken saigen barūn.) Interesting to see バルーン (barūn) for balloon rather than 風船 (fūsen). I don't remember what term was used last time.
>>
>>282427032
>Well, they do have long legs.
it's the "daddy" part that's peculiar lol
you definitely get a face if you translate it literally to an esl (or they might recognize "daddy" already and then make a face)

End of chapter! I literally only remembered the wallet from this chapter.
>>
Heh, this chapter's original title is 未来のワンピース (mirai no wanpīsu) so, Future One Piece, referring obviously to a dress in this context, but it did make me giggle.

Furinkan has a note about this cover: "The title page for this chapter shows Sakura standing in front of a building with a clock at the top. The building is actually a real place known as Wako Co., Ltd. (株式会社和光, Kabushiki-gaisha Wakō). The store sells upscale goods like jewellery and watches. The building was designed by Jin Watanabe in 1932 and the bell of the clock plays the Westminster Chimes."

I'll post their comparison image after the dump. Fortunately, this image link wasn't broken.

July 12th, 2017. Author's note:
"Q: What is your favorite soul-stirring anisong or anime theme song?
A: Mazinger Z's theme."

I remember this being one of the few times a female Rumiko protagonist has their slimmer build pointed out. They're often called pretty or beautiful or cute, but most of the time, they don't get called thin. Even though they obviously are. Manga art-style does play into that of course.

Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything Rin-ne related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread.

I will be returning next Wednesday to dump Volume 39 of Rin-ne. Thanks for reading. Time flies, doesn't it?

Huh, I sort of had gotten the impression that Matsugo was someone who generally found women to be bothersome, but I guess he only acts antagonistically towards those whom he sees as rivals in his pursuit of Rinne. Well, I guess it makes more sense that way, considering the fact that he decided to hire a female black cat.
>>
>>282424516
What I find funny is that, since the sentiment between that view is usually that men and women can't be friends because there's a chance of them possibly falling in love, that would imply that homosexuals can't be friends with people of the same sex, and that bisexuals can't be friends with anyone.
