Alright, it is Saturday and I am gonna post the thirty-eighth volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is 境界のRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.Previous thread: >>282345129I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
May 10th, 2017. Author's note:"Q: Please tell us what you secretly worked hard at when you were a student.A: Manga."
>>282421302He didn't eat anything weird this time, right?
>>282421320
>>282421340Miho would probably could make a good youtube channel with this stuff.
>>282421368Zwoop instead of their usual Zooom. I feel like it can't be that hard to consistently localize it. I guess new localizers aren't even aware it is a running gag...
>>282421392Found him.
>>282421407Animal spirit was not an unusual term and was translated directly for the localization: 動物霊 (dōbutsu rei).
>>282421460It's a struggle.
>>282421474VIZ did pretty good here. The original line in Japanese was 捨てられたにゃ (sute rareta nya~) or "abandoned meow~".
Saturday already...>>282421407How much can rinne carry flying, hes carrying Sakura
>>282421515それで・・・いつ復讐させてくれるのかにゃく? (Sore de itsu fukushū sa sete kureru no ka nya ku?).
>>282421594You get the idea. These all have nya in them.
>>282421636Oh, I didn't mention the nekomata plug 猫又プラグ (nekomata puragu). We've seen this tool before and it is translated pretty directly. As for the revolving lantern, here's my usual note on the topic. 走馬灯 (sōmatō) is the term for revolving lantern. We've discussed this before so here's my note from then. According to a quick Google (showing a cultural note by the Japanese Wiki which is a translated section of Japanese Wikipedia, it seems), it is a kind of garden lantern which is crafted to show a revolving shadow picture with its inside and outside frames. They also note that: "Recently, somato has come to be used in words to describe the flashback of one's lifetime memory, such as somato phenomenon (a flashback phenomenon) and somato experience (a flashback experience), which is said to be experienced by a dying person — or which a near-death experiencer says h (or she) saw. It becomes rare for the public to see the real somato, so the word somato is often misunderstood to indicate the phenomenon itself."
>>282421794Hehehe. Cuties.
>>282421811
>>282421844Another staple.
>>282421856Whoops.
>>282421866No reunion, sadly. Kitten's been dead for quite some time.
>>282421876End of chapter. Keep at it...
身辺整理 (shinpen seiri) was the original title. Means what VIZ translated it as, I just found it interesting.May 17th, 2017. Author's note:"Q: Please tell us a foreign celebrity who you think is cool.A: Nicholas Cage."
>>282422213Jumping right into it. No pretense or disguises.
>>282421866Silly cat
>>282422225Oh, reminder for those who don't know, Ageha's sister had no name for ages but was always referred to as 美人秘書 (bijin hisho). Then it turns out her name is actually Bijin. How droll. Anyway, Rumiko actually fielded a question about this in 2018 interview regarding Rin-ne. "...[Q:] To tell you the truth, I laughed when it was revealed that her real name was “Beauty”.Takahashi: ... Regarding Bijin’s name, I was determined to give her a different one since she showed up, but it remained unchanged... I decided when she was introduced in a chapter that it would stay that way."I'll be honest, Furinkan's translation here is a little confusing. I don't know when she decided to just have her name be Bijin, but yeah, she did plan on thinking of a different name before settling on the gag that pays off hundreds of chapters later.
>>282422398Anoyo Hotel was written with English characters in the original manga as well. Anoyo being あの世, meaning "the other world" and referring to the afterlife.
>>282422435Sugar mama was 金ヅル (kin dzuru). It means golden crane and refers to a financial supporter or source of revenue.
>>282422510Hehehe. He's not exactly the faithful type from what we've seen.
>>282422551A class act. I guess the glasses don't have a prescription.
>>282422579You may have forgotten, but yeah, he still had his connection to Kain's family.
>>282422599Per the title.
>>282422615What?
>>282422739I don't know if the localizers realized when Sabato said 美人くん (Bijin-kun), he was referring to her by name. Anyway, I guess he broke relatively even with most of his dates? Obviously, not always since Kain's family was driven to poverty by the man.
>>282422818
>>282422857The IC DEBIT CARD (ICキャッシュカードのご利用) and AFTERLIFE BANK (阿世銀行) was redrawn. They also removed the U from Rokudou, since VIZ went with Rokudo originally.
>>282422818What a ladies' man!
>>282423192VIZ was pretty loose with the translation here, since they didn't want to include a cultural note and the idea is conveyed alright even if it makes the image seem a bit bizarre. Anyway, Sabato referred to them as あしながおじさん (ashinaga ojisan) which can refer to daddy long-legs (ie. the insect) or "the anonymous scholarship system for orphans whose parents have been killed in traffic accidents (from Daddy-Long-Legs, a 1912 novel by Jean Webster)". This unusual illustration appears to be based on a common cover for this novel. The caption of the illustration says おじさんのイメージです (ojisan no imējidesu), ie. "this is an image of Daddy". Apparently, the 1912 novel was very popular in Japan because it places a lot of importance on respecting the elderly and education. Anyway, Furinkan should've included a note. But I had to find this out myself. Don't say I don't do anything.
>>282423454Bijin-kun again.
>>282423477Organization means always being ready.
>>282423500
>>282423522End of chapter. So, there you go. His economy's propped up by old money. Bijin can enjoy herself without too much guilt. Also, a little late for the bad behavior thing...
Original title is 語る声 (kataru koe). Telling is fine, but it seems 語る seems to more commonly refer to narrating or telling a story. Oh and this cover was originally in full color. May 24th, 2017. Author's note:"Q: Please tell us the first manga you bought with your own money.A: The Phantom Alliance by Shotaro Ishinomori or Cyborg 009."
>>282423649Skipped the spacer. We got ourselves our setup and full body shot of Sakura Mamiya.
>>282423674
>>282423687These things can live for a long time.
>>282423711ひどい (hidoi).
>>282423738Pimp here was the ever versatile ヒモ (himo, meaning string or man financially dependent on a woman or pimp). So, it could be implying she's paying for him rather than the other way around. Oh and beats me was 知らねえよっ! (shiranē yo~tsu!), ie. "I don't know!" or "No clue!" or "Beats me!" but it wasn't setting up an abuse joke is my point. Hiroshi was written as ヒロシ and it is a common name.
>>282423844さっさと出せ (sassato dase) was "spit it out" and it means "get it out now" or "hand it over". The parenthetical was in the original.
>>282423896Mini Sakura Mamiya.
>>282423909Sign was redrawn. Also, it was 60 cm (written in English) for the length. モモちゃん (momo-chan). The name means peach. Also, not sure what happened with the first line of the poster. It was 捜しています (I am looking for). As far as I can tell, there isn't a shop name on the rest of the poster either.
>>282423983Sad. It is so cute.
>>282424013Oops.
>>282424025Rokumon seems to being thinking metaphorically. The parrot's line is translated pretty directly.
>>282424046
>>282424057There they are.
>>282424069Sigh...
>>282424107You probably saw this part coming.
>>282424124
>>282424137Surprisingly, I think this is the first time we've seen this. I guess you don't usually need a way to indicate that it is a ghost, since you can just ask it.
>>282424152End of chapter. Goodbye, Momo-chan. Rinne's line in Japanese was 微妙だ (bimyōda) and appears to be referring to the taste. It usually means "not great" or "a bit off" in this context.
Anju. They made her hair pinkish-blonde in the anime, so it was a bit odd seeing her with very blue hair on the volume cover. I did my usual interpretation and saw it as completely white, which I feel would also work for her.May 31st, 2017. Author's note:"Q: Please tell us what you were obsessed with collecting when you were a student!A: Manga by Ryoichi Ikegami."
>>282424240Big announcement.
>>282424253Minor recap.
>>282424265
>>282424275Hardly was まさか (masaka) which is a colloquial phrase along the lines of "no way!".
>>282424337Oh?
>>282424364Her methods are something else.
>>282424378How nice. I love the skeletal merry-go-round.
>>282424395To think, she could barely speak to him before.
>>282424401フラれる (furareru). And yes, it means dumped.
>>282424419
>>282421340but didn't kuroboshi-3 already know he wasn't hireable with his fear of ghosts?
>>282424427Mortal plane being a translation of この世 (this world). It works.
>>282424452I completely forgot that it was Rinne that introduced this nonsense.
>>282424477Old-fashioned. But common. >>282424431Yes, but got under his skin being reminded, it seems.
>>282424516The name of the lake was localized. It was ときめき湖 (tokimeki mizūmi). Not quite Doki Doki Lake. ときめき does refer to the beating of the heart, palpitation, throbbing, pounding, fluttering, etc. Red Bride was also translated from 赤い花嫁 (Akai Hanayome) which just means Red Bride.
>>282421460maybe he's not scared because she's a catgirl around his size?>>282421474>three daysbro....>>282421515a kitten! a different one, but a little kiten nonetheless :-)>>282421594>the house was completely emptyn- nyo...>>282421811cute and smol
>>282424613Gruesome.
>>282424620That school kid and old lady probably didn't have the best married life.
>>282424640End of chapter. What's in store for our happy platonic pair?
June 7th, 2017. Author's note:"Q: What is your favorite item in your home?A: My work chair."
>>282421866dumb cat, this is why you use your nose>>282421876>Kitten's been dead for quite some time.so did the kitten... starve? succumbed to the elements?>>282421888non-kitten ghosts will take more time...
>>282424666Spoooky recap.
>>282422818He could use Kain's family money to fund the poor girls dates
>>282424675Sakura Mamiya was being more vague in the original, which I assume was how the line was intended. To refer to both of them and maybe the atmosphere in general. あらキレイ(ara kirei) or "Oh, beautiful!" or "Oh, how lovely!". >>282424670Maybe froze, yeah. Or something got it. Who knows?
>>282424745消臭スプレーで悪霊臭 (shōshū supurē de akuryō-shū). I don't know which part is the product but yeah, "eliminating spray de-evil-spirit", I guess.
>>282424798Oh, duh.
>>282424805Oh, been a while since we've seen this thing. In chapter 26, VIZ went with "Beacon of Truth" for this thing, but here, they went with something more direct. 白日灯 (hakujitsu-tō) was the term used here and it seems to just mean "daylight lamp".
>>282424902
>>282424395>And she was a good friend
>>282424666Unusually devious-looking Rinne
>>282424922霊障增幅煙筒 (rei sawa zō haba kemuri tsutsu) or "spiritual obstruction increasing smoke bomb", I guess. I feel like this was a deliberately complex term being used here. The raws I have did not have clear enough furigana, so I tried my best with the Romanji, but Google wasn't playing nice and was giving me a mix of Chinese and Japanese again. The goofy narration in the bottom left referred to 霊よけスプレー (rei yo ke supurē) or spirit repellant spray. Or maybe repelled spirits using spray. I don't know Japanese.
>>282425091
>>282425101Hehehehe. A bunch of battle shonen protagonists then, hyuck hyuck.
>>282425123Plan for every eventuality.
>>282425101Always good to have a rape whistle for situations like these
>>282425134
>>282425161!
>>282425179I don't know if the original chapters Hell appeared in had it be referred to by this name. It definitely didn't in English, but it is an accurate translation of the line here. 地獄タワー (jigoku tawā).
>>282425254Committed.
>>282425270For all of Rinne's scheming, he couldn't let this come to pass.
>>282425285That might be true for the readers too. I don't quite remember.
>>282425298End of chapter. That's a pretty big step. Sort of. Good for you, Anju. Also, what a dumb little mug.
>>282424124I wonder if rumiko inserted the part about the phone from experience
June 14th, 2017. Author's note:"Q: Who do you think is the scariest person in the world?A: Someone like Hitler."
>>282425381死神青年会 (shinigami seinen-kai) being translated as Shinigami Boys Club again rather than Shinigami Boys and Girls Club, despite it being for both. Shinigami Youth Association is probably most accurate.
>>282425426The sign and the tag had to be redrawn. The trap and the shirt was written the same way in the original panel.
>>282424516Rumiko dropping redpills
>>282425462That's a lot.
>>282425381>Someone like HitlerRumiko's keeping it real, huh
>>282425484I guess the bureau is hosting the event this time. I guess they often host, now that I think of it.
>>282425501You can see the original text of the tag in the fourth panel in teeny, teeny writing.
>>282425513
>>282425527You may notice the hive looks more like a wasp's nest than a normal beehive. Japanese uses the same term for both ハチの巣 (hachinosu) since hachi is a general term that refers to both. It also appears to include sawflies, whatever those are. Also, I googled "Are wasps attracted to the color black?" and yeah, they apparently react more aggressively toward darker colors.
>>282425605ハチコロリ (hachikorori). Korori is apparently the sound of something being done easily, so I guess it is used in this context. Bee-B-Gone is good. I don't know how this vending machine fits into the scam.
>>282425641
>>282425657I will miss him.
>>282425667
>>282425677Does any of that really prove anything...?
>>282425688VIZ went with crap for げげ (gege, "exclamation of surprised disappointment, disgust, or worry (yuck, ick, ack, eeew, crap!, blech, gross")) but not for 糞 (kuso)? Odd.
>>282425688Like master, like cat
>>282425728Made for a properly spooky wanted poster, admittedly.
>>282425740To be honest, I was surprised the little girl thing wasn't part of a disguise for the scam.
>>282425761Sigh...
>>282425774End of chapter. It seems to have taken her quite a long time to amass all that.
June 21st, 2017. Author's note:"Q: What was something you saw live that impressed you?A: The stage production of the Lion King and a performance by Wagakki Band."
>>282425813Setup page is as usual.
>>282425822Back to zoom, though they changed scary to creepy for some reason.
>>282425849The sign was obviously redrawn. The end of an era. Rinne's last line on this page was 夜逃げ (yonige) and means escaping at night and refers to exactly this sort of thing. Night flight, skipping paying, etc.
>>282425898
>>282425910Unsurprisingly, these two things are somehow related.
>>282425924ボケカス (bokekasu) as usual.
>>282425949Kind of cool.
>>282425972Very passionate for his craft.
>>282425990
>>282426000不死鳥 (fushichō, meaning undying bird) is a term that refers to the phoenix and not any similar mythological birds.
>>282426030汚れ仕事 (yogore shigoto) was the term in Japanese. Same meaning as dirty work.
>>282426048Hey, a cultural note. This scam has shown up a few times in Rumic works.
>>282426055
>>282426068Last time, these were localized to "scythe-eating bugs". Scythe mites has a ring to it. In Japanese, they were カマ喰い虫 (kama kui mushi), basically "scythe eaters".
>>282426171I wonder if he went to hell to get these guys. Last time, they were mentioned as being from hell.
>>282426192Wonder how much he had wracked up. Guess the maintenance work has been on credit for a while...
>>282426209End of chapter! Oh no!
Cute cover and chapter title. June 28th, 2017. Author's note:"Q: What was the reason you picked up Shonen Sunday for the first time?A: My brother bought it."
>>282422213>Q: Please tell us a foreign celebrity who you think is cool.>A: Nicholas Cage.i wonder what her favorite movie of his is
>>282426235Not really "the back". The localizer should look at the art when translating this stuff. Sakura Mamiya said the other side, but it clearly isn't the back.
>>282426269
>>282426281Rumic gesture.
>>282426289Recap.
>>282426296あの世の白紙ヶ丘 (anoyo no hakushi gaoka) was "the afterlife's blank hills". I have no idea what he means and I assume VIZ didn't either. 白紙 (hakushi) does mean blank sheet of paper or simply white paper. And ヶ丘 does refer to "hill of". So, VIZ did what they could.
>>282426373Furnace of Oblivion was 忘却の炉 (bōkyaku no ro).
>>282426390Would you look at that.

>>282426480Also, one of them was just Jabba the Hutt, wasn't he? Also, I guess that's where the blank papers come in...

>>282426532Heartless, but it worked. Refuto's line here was not his usual insult, he called him a 鬼 (oni). Here's the full line in case you're curious. 鼻歌歌いながら鬼かおのれはーっ! (Hanauta utainagara oni ka onore wa ̄ ~tsu!) It seems to have lost some nuance in translation, but since I don't know Japanese, I'm not sure. Googling it, it seems おのれ is an old-fashioned exclamation meaning "you!" essentially, a way to angrily shout at someone. Also, whoops.
>>282426641Sorry, rabbits.
>>282426653End of chapter! Happy end for our bunnies (status quo, but with less debts for now). Random gold bars, koban, ring boxes with rings inside and pearl necklaces in those hills. Quite a mining feat.
It is summer, so we get some pool and beach stuff! Original title is プールの落とし物 (pūru no otoshimono). 落とし物 refers to lost property or lost items, but it literally refers to the item being dropped. So, VIZ decided to go with this. Also, Furinkan had screenshots of various ads in Weekly Shonen Sunday that were somewhat relevant for this volume, but every link is broken. Sorry, guys.July 5th, 2017. Author's note:"Q: July 7th is Tanabata. What would you like to wish for?A: Health."
>>282426725I'm a little sad I left summer go by without hitting up the pool. And yeah, Hawaii was written in English in the original background too.

>>282426840Rumic gesture. Also, absolutely not deserved.>>282426846Ah, well, I did see the other definition included for the term, so I added it. But I guess they have their own term for it too.
>>282426872I give up on the reply chain. Sorry, guys.
>>282426885Or he's just like dozens of people on /a/. Hah. Anyway, the term he used was 年増 (toshima) which means "mature woman" or "middle-aged woman". Though it obviously can be used derisively.
>>282426946Heh, Rinne.
>>282426970
>>282426980Sigh... that probably put a damper on things.
>>282426872>Ah, well, I did see the other definition included for the term, so I added it. But I guess they have their own term for it too.i was curious because "daddy long legs" is such a peculiar name that i couldn't believe that ashinaga ojison was an organic name coined by the japanese and wondered if it was something influenced by contact with american soldiersyuureigumo is a fun bit of coincidence when you consider what rin-ne is about though hehe
>>282426991

But yeah, I get you. I feel like I knew the ghost thing for some reason, but I can't think of why I would've known that.
>>282427032It doesn't seem like Shoma is referencing a specific product here, but I'll post his entire first line here if you're curious 霊のこだわり物件再現バルーン。 (rei no kodawari bukken saigen barūn.) Interesting to see バルーン (barūn) for balloon rather than 風船 (fūsen). I don't remember what term was used last time.

>>282426480Tonegawa???
>>282427099End of chapter! I literally only remembered the wallet from this chapter.
Heh, this chapter's original title is 未来のワンピース (mirai no wanpīsu) so, Future One Piece, referring obviously to a dress in this context, but it did make me giggle. Furinkan has a note about this cover: "The title page for this chapter shows Sakura standing in front of a building with a clock at the top. The building is actually a real place known as Wako Co., Ltd. (株式会社和光, Kabushiki-gaisha Wakō). The store sells upscale goods like jewellery and watches. The building was designed by Jin Watanabe in 1932 and the bell of the clock plays the Westminster Chimes."I'll post their comparison image after the dump. >>282427228I remember this being one of the few times a female Rumiko protagonist has their slimmer build pointed out. They're often called pretty or beautiful or cute, but most of the time, they don't get called thin. Even though they obviously are. Manga art-style does play into that of course.
>>282427258Mooooney.
>>282427273Also, I just realized that Rinne didn't remember he used up a sticker for this. Unless they are reusable. That would be crazy given how cheap they are.

>>282427343Hehe, that first panel's pretty funny.
>>282427354夢のアイテムだね (yume no aitemuda ne). I don't know why VIZ didn't go with "dream item" given "a dream come true" is common enough an expression and that is what yume means.
>>282427382He's not very skilled with the software.
>>282427388End of chapter, end of volume. At least he got ten onigiri from this. No fridge though, so I assume they didn't last. I don't know why she's reaching into her wallet for this by the way, but her line did refer to onigiri so it wasn't a mistranslation or anything. Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything Rin-ne related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread.I will be returning next Wednesday to dump Volume 39 of Rin-ne. Thanks for reading. Time flies, doesn't it?

Here's the Japanese cover for Volume 38. I actually don't have either the back cover or inner sleeve illustration. I am sorry. If anyone has them for Vol. 38, feel free to post it. Pretty different color scheme from the VIZ one.>>282428567>>282428029Yup. Also, nice job finding the ad. >>282427970Right? That would be a lifelong trauma.

>>282422599Is that a demon girl with twintails? If Sabato doesn't want her, then I'd be more than happy to take her in his stead.
>>282424395Huh, I sort of had gotten the impression that Matsugo was someone who generally found women to be bothersome, but I guess he only acts antagonistically towards those whom he sees as rivals in his pursuit of Rinne. Well, I guess it makes more sense that way, considering the fact that he decided to hire a female black cat.
>>282424516What I find funny is that, since the sentiment between that view is usually that men and women can't be friends because there's a chance of them possibly falling in love, that would imply that homosexuals can't be friends with people of the same sex, and that bisexuals can't be friends with anyone.
