Most of the runtime is a teen mech drama, character study at best. What questions is it posing? When you're not a teen it's kinda hard to rewatch.I think its classic legacy is largely the art direction and atmosphere. I think Mushishi or Kino or even some of the more political Gundams, are genuinely thought provoking. Many others. Eva does not do that for me.

Mostly I like Evangelion because auteurs are fairly rare in this medium, especially TV series. It's flawed in lots of ways and is confused about what it's actually doing, but to me that is part of what makes it interesting. It ends up being a highly personal work where the "feelings" and artistic intent of the creators are centered in a way that is usually heavily moderated by the typical needs and goals of television anime production (again, that tension between art and capital is part of what makes it compelling).

Maybe it could have been decent if it focused more on developing a consistent world building and less on the ill-informed opinions of Anno about philosophy/psychology. Sure, Lilith and Adam lifeforms weren't meant to exist together, but it doesn't explain how it results in an effect like that. For that matter, even why there were two types of seeds of life that weren't meant to exist together isn't explained, or anything of the sort.

They each have significant relationship voids in their life and desperately try to fill that need, to varying degrees of failure and limited success. I think those human needs of wanting a partner who understands and loves you, a mother, a father, are very relatable. I find it compelling and interesting, personally. And it's portrayed in ways that are unusual for television anime. It's normal for other mediums to have authentic (but heightened) depictions of human desire and need for love, but less so in anime and that's why the show works for me.

I love Evangelion. I first watched it as a kid, and I’ve always loved the TV ending. End of Evangelion is a technical marvel, but I can’t stand its narrative. The Rebuilds once again gave me the same feeling the TV series ending did.
