A bedroom door slamming shut on it's own and a pencil spontaneously inserting itself in a lady's palm
Y-Yeah dear readers... Don't worry about any of that right now, just listen to this!

Reminds me of that one Junji Ito story about the dude who lent his new home to a Mold researcher. I think Ito-sensei would be very proud.

The moment mommy dearest isn't there to keep him in line, he forgets to put his backpack in its place immediately. Untidy boy!

Mieruko-chan but it's somehow even more disquieting without the comedy/cuteness to temper the the terror.

Everyone with a bit of savvy guessed the abuse backstory was coming, so I appreciate we got the reveal before the bruises. Would've been too unsubtle.

I appreciate how the Lion's Share of it happens off-panel away from the viewer's watch not only for how delicately the subject matter is handled, but unfortunately mirroring how realistically t happens IRL. Also notice how caring and remorseful the father figure is in this story of Yuuma's is depicted by comparison.

This could have been avoided if the mother had been able to recognize that the situation seemed suspicious and had answered the daughter's questions, but it's very common for parents to just get angry and throw reason aside when they think their child is disobeying them.

This story might be taking notes from the Japanese concept of the Ikiryo or Living Ghost:
https://thejapanbox.com/blogs/japanese-mythology/ikiryo
Essentially, a tradition folklore in which an individual may subconsciously conjure and expel a piece of their own spirit to curse and haunt someone if their own bottled up ill-will reaches a certain boiling point.

Just want to say this is one of the most genuinely horrifying (in every sense of the word) stories I've ever read.
Just imagine if passing on and final rites worked like this. Instead of gently nudging departed loved ones on who only want to remain by your side you're just torturing and killing them twice over, unknowingly.

You're the first reader other than myself to notice that and I don't believe the resemblance is a coincidence. I think Umakin deserves to be placed in the pantheon of eerie equestrian-esqe abominations alongside the Beserk Horse and François (Mieruko-chan).

Why does the art style look like Attack on Titan?
This panel >>283250519 especially look like a Titan attack.
>>
>>283261298
Maybe the cruder lineart combined with the hard crosshatching? That panel also features a creature with wonky anatomy that amplifies its creepiness.

>cruder lineart combined with the hard crosshatching
Maybe. Even the characters reminds me of Isayama's old style where he drew everyone with these big creepy eyes.
>>
>>283250087
Couldn't the kid have tried communicating with his parents? He can interact with the environment to an extent and he seems old enough to know basic hiragana, he could write something in the spilled incense ash.
>>
>>283250569
REMOVE HORSE
>>
>>283262028
Hatching, lots and lots of cross-hatched shading. Also the characters are drawn small, or rather thin, for their panel size which contributes to feeling of fragility within the story.

>>283262384
>Couldn't the kid have tried communicating with his parents? He can interact with the environment to an extent and he seems old enough to know basic hiragana, he could write something in the spilled incense ash.
The story works because it reverses the common notions of a "haunting" on their head ascribing negative motivations to ghostly behavior where there were none. Even if he wrote out a cry for help, it would probably either be misunderstood or not trusted.

>>283263311
>REMOVE HORSE
GTFO Stepmom! You want a No. 2 pencil stigmata through the other hand?
>>
>>283250569
Hair in its mouth, with screaming in the previous page, makes me think that he took a big ol' bite out of someones head

I didn't even think of that.
