Original title was 白骨洞 with the Furigana びゃっこつ どう (Byakkotsu dō). This does translate to White Bone Cave, but it is a proper noun, so there's argument to be made that it should've been simply romanized. Googling it, it does appear to be an actual cave but I assume that isn't the reference here. It also appears to be associated with Journey to the West but it isn't in the original tale.

Also, per Furinkan: "This was not a typically scheduled double issue, this was the result of the Coronavirus pandemic."

The master's line here was a bit adjusted for reasons I sort of understand, but the original "Ah. I know who you are." was the そうか、おまえ･･･の家の。 (Sō ka, omae ... no ie no.) or something to the effect of "I see, ... that house" with house referring to a lineage or family in this context. The master is vaguely aware of where Mao came from, basically.

I also have a line regarding the "dragon's pulse" technique from Furinkan: "Dragon's Pulse technique - This is a literal translation of the original Japanese which refers to "ryuumyaku" (竜脈). This is referring to the air or energy that flows down a mountain range. The term is associated with the Chinese concept of feng shui." The 脈 can also refer to veins.

I think it is an 烏帽子 (eboshi)? That is a broad term, admittedly, but they're from the Heian era. This manga and many others seem to use it as a way of quickly conveying someone is an onmyoji.

Furinkan has a note here: "There is mention of the "treasure hall" in this chapter, the room where the most valuable teachings, scrolls and items are housed within the Goko Temple are held. In Japanese this is called the "homotsuden" (宝物殿). This is a standard name for places where important artifacts are held for safe keeping. What's funny is that the term used in this bubble appears to be 館 with the furigana (やかた) which just means hall or mansion house. So, I think Furinkan just assumed VIZ to be consistent since they previously used the term treasure house for homotsuden.

I took a screenshot of this page when I got to it originally. I don't know what the hell VIZ was thinking here. Per Furinkan: "The Viz English edition has the sound effect "zoinks" over the roof of the house at night. The original Japanese sound effect was "ゴォォ" (gooo) which is the onomatopoeia for "woosh"." The Japanese sound effect thing I use sometimes suggests brr, blast, boom, fwoosh, woosh, roar or being on fire. Which I guess is also a roar. Either way, none of them are "zoinks".

I'm pretty sure they do it again later. I mean, it did make me laugh, but I'll be honest, I assumed it was some goofy sound effect in Japanese as well. The fact that it isn't means this brothers me.

End of chapter. The first line here did appear to be a question in the original (with ですか or desuka). Yurako didn't ask directly but simply wondered what her 姿 (sugata) was like for Mao. This term can mean figure, shape, form or appearance. VIZ went with form. Since it is such a broad term and there's a lot of unanswered questions, I can't really blame VIZ, but I think appearance may have been more accurate. Yurako is referred to here with -sama in the last panel, hence miss. The term used for monster was 化け物 (Bakemono).

So, I double checked and Rumiko Takahashi mentioned in two separate author's comments during Inuyasha (one on April 14th, 1999 and one on December 26th, 2007) about wanting to learn how to play the ukulele (though in the 2007 one, she simply answered that if she were to take lessons, she'd take ukulele ones). So, apparently, she got started in 1999 after the author's comment or something.

The Japanese text didn't specifically refer to looking like that, but just trailed off in that vague way. I think it is a reasonable reading of it. As for the last bit, Mao mentions that he "originally" didn't care much about Shiranui-sama, presumably as opposed to now which is conveyed by the English text without really mentioning it directly. Hyakka's line was ヒドいなおまえ。(Hido i na omae.) or "You're terrible." or "You're mean.". I don't really mind the translation, even if it is a cliche since I think the Japanese line is also one.

Also, Kamon's line did seem a little less definitive, it was うん･･確かにコート汚されるのはまっぴらだけど。(Un tashika ni kōto yogosa reru no wa mappiradakedo.) or "Yeah... I certainly don't want my coat to get dirty." Hyakka's was completely different, it was 菜花てめえ今呼び捨てにしただろ。(Nanoka temē ima yobisute ni shitadaro.) or "Nanoka, you referred to me without an honorific.". 呼び捨 (yobisute) refers to the act of calling someone by their name directly without an honorific. He also used the rude form of "you" as in てめえ (temē). Amusingly, Nanoka's line was the same and she did call him small.

The explanation seems to have been cut down a bit, as Sana explains that if their onmyoji is excellent (the enemy having one seems to be a given), they can return the curse or it might just be a curse from a public onmyoji who doesn't like the clan's existence. So, the chapter title is just his name. Here's Furinkan's full note regarding it: "白眉 Hakubi (白眉) translates as "white eyebrows" which is appropriate considering that even before his immortality bleached his hair Hakubi had white eyebrows. His current alias, "Captain Shirasu" (白洲). Shirasu means "white sand bar" which again connects to the "white" in his true name, Hakubi." Someone mentioned last thread that the term also refers to someone who is "the best of" something. This is apparently due to a Chinese legend. Oh and 白洲 apparently also refers to the court of law during the Edo period because they sat in the sand.

This title is pretty different from the original. The original was 相剋の外 (Sōkoku no soto). Furinkan's note is "A more literal translation of the chapter title would be "Beyond Rivalry" (相剋の外).". 相剋 does appear to mean rivalry, competition or conflict in Japanese. Not sure what other associations it has. In Chinese, it appears to be mutually destructive. Guess we'll see why VIZ went with this instead. I assume it refers to the competition set up at the 五色堂 (Goshiki dō), five-colored temple or five-sided temple.

Another note by Furinkan: "This double issue is typically scheduled around this time each year, so this one is not due to the Coronavirus pandemic. At this time, everyone (including Takahashi) are working remotely and teleconferencing. Takahashi discusses this in Past the Point of Self-Control where she explains her editors meet with her via computer but her assistants come and work in masks." We don't have a translation of Past the Point of Self-Control, I think.

The chapter title here is simply romanized. It was written as マオグイ here. Unusually, it is entirely in Katakana. I'll see what the story says about the term, but Furinkan has some notes. For some reason, most of them are about how it isn't the same thing as mogwai.

This little story comes up in Fruits Basket. The "he's so smart" was 打わてば響く (Da wateba hibiku) which is an expression that literally means "If you hit it, it will resonate" but in this context (and presumably most contexts) means "Quick on the uptake" or "Quick response.". Also, you'd think cats would just go under metal like the rest of the mammals or "beasts" or what have you. But this is admittedly more fun.

So, yeah, in the Japanese, we had the term 猫鬼 used for both bubbles but with furigana clarifying which pronunciation to use. 猫鬼 can also be read as nekomata which is a whole other cat thing. Furinkan notes that: "Historically we see references made to the creatures in the court of Emperor Wen of the Sui dynasty (541-604 CE) when members of his extended court were supposedly worshipping and controlling a maogui cat demon in order to sicken court rivals." I googled it and yeah, in Book of Sui, a historical record talks about this.

Mao's description of Hakubi in the third panel seems pretty vague. Presumably, VIZ got the correct intention. あの人ああ見えて純粋だったから。(Ano hito ā miete junsuidattakara.) or "Despite his appearance, he was pure". Also, I looked at the last bubble to see if it is any different and I'll be honest, I think this is one where machine translation won't cut it. Someone else will have to chime in if VIZ did good.

Yeah, dictionary said it is taken from literary Chinese. Kyoto University has a blurb about it because they have a thing called the Hakubi Project.

"The term hakubi (白眉), literally means ‘white eyebrows’ in Japanese (白 : white, 眉 : eyebrows). The word originates from a Three Kingdoms era (220-280 AD) Chinese legend: “Three kingdoms saga (三国志)”. According to the legend, one of the kingdoms, called Shu (蜀), was home to five brothers with extraordinary talents. The fourth brother; 馬良季常 (Baryo Kijo), who was particularly outstanding, had white hairs in his eyebrows, and so the term hakubi has come to refer to particularly talented individuals."

Wikipedia has an article about the guy, with the romanization Bak Mei. One of the Five Elders of Shaolin.
