In this chapter, only about ten have passed since they found Hidan and Kakuzu and called for backup and the little skirmish between those two guys skewering Hidan couldn't have taken longer than a minute at most. The blades are clearly longer than his knuckles dusters, yet he attempts (and fails, even though he can see the multi blades) to block. This implies he had no other choice. The blades don't even come out of a compartment and surprise him, he fully intended or was forced to block with both hands (and fail) a weapon swung at range with one hand.That or its just horrible writing
