Been waiting for Kaido's defeat cause I wanted to discuss him in comparison to Madara. Because one of the biggest complaints of Kaido was his failure to kill anybody, and I feel most people find Kaido to be a disappointment as a character. But Madara also barely actually kills any named characters personally in the war of Naruto, and yet everyone really likes Madara and no one ever seems to hold that against him like they do Kaido. Is it just because people like Madara more? They occupy kind of similar spaces in their stories as the world's strongest man who most people are terrified of. But Madara is obviously a more consistent and developed character. And more important to the narrative. I feel Kaido is hampered in this way because it never feels like you get a genuine read on him, he never really gets his plan or desires out of the planning stage, and he's not very important to the overall narrative or world of One Piece in the end. We learn more about his history after Wano than we learn during Wano. Luffy also doesn't have any greater stake here or personal investment fighting with Kaido than he did Crocodile, Lucci, or Doflamingo. And considerably less than he'll have against Blackbeard and Akainu. In the end Kaido's just another arc villain isn't he?It's not an original idea but maybe Kaido and Orochi really should've been the same character.

With Big Mom,thanks to Fishman Island we see firsthand how she expands her influence,how she allows those under her banner to live and what she expects as payment. The only look of something similar to this is the Caribou cover story where that island just seems to be Wano-lite,so it just seems like he's enslaving people for weapons for a nonspecific goal of fighting in the future.tldr he feels less like a narrative villain & moreso an arbitrary obstacle to get past

The other part is Oda having Kaido be the scheming evil mastermind sowing death and destruction for a solid 25% of the series (Punk Hazard til Wano), only for him to turn out to be a somewhat likeable and conflicted figure dependent on the Joyboy mythos (something Oda surely only came up with as he went on).
