Alright, it is Thursday and I am gonna post the eleventh volume of MAO. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to MAO after the dump. In addition, as MAO is atypically plot-heavy as a Rumiko Takahashi manga, please be mindful of others and use spoilers tags when discussing things that are revealed later in chapters that have not been dumped.MAO is Rumiko Takahashi's current ongoing series, a dark fantasy manga with a more serious tone than most of her other major series. I highly recommend it, as there genuinely is a lot of intrigue.Previous thread: >>284253712I will be using the official localization of the manga volumes by VIZ (despite my issues with it). Keep in mind that the nature of the writing in MAO and this localization in particular has resulted in some mistranslated lines. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
Furinkan notes that: "Takahashi had joined Twitter recently when this chapter came out and shared the unused title page on her Twitter account." I'll post this after the dump.June 30th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: Could you tell us something that based on vague impressions alone you wouldn't try?A: I missed my chance to get in on the Tapioca fad."
>>284419946!
>>284419969Still calling him Mao-san, though it seemed like she struggled to get it out here.
>>284419987Term for ghost here was 幽霊 (Yūrei).
>>284420020
>>284420096Now, I might question the idea of thus leaving the family, but it seems to refer to the head family essentially and Kanae is marrying out of it. Also, VIZ made it a little more explicitly about death, he says その家は滅びるという。 (Sono-ka wa horobiru to iu.) or "That house/family will be destroyed/ruined".
>>284420256The last line to me seems more ambiguous in Japanese to me. It was 抜いたから・・・ (Nuitakara) or "As it was pulled out..." from what I can tell. Not sure on this one though.
>>284420320
>>284420373She refers to it as the 護り刀 (Mamori-gatana) or Sword of Protection like the chapter title. That might sound like a somewhat fancy name for it, but it apparently can just be used to refer to any sword used for self-defense, commonly a small sword known as a kaiken (懐剣). Looking into it more, being passed as a wedding gift is even more appropriate as daughters of samurai were said to carry it in the belt of their wedding kimono. If you look up images of these blades, you often see women holding them.
>>284419897With that sword and big red bow, Nanoka looks kind of similar to the protagonist of Blood+ (I haven't watched the series, just seen pictures of it)
>>284420506Kanae seems a bit less certain or intentionally a bit indirect as she says 血・・・のようなものが (Chi ... no yōna mono ga) or "Blood... like thing" essentially. Nanoka also seems like certain and doesn't refer to the previously known information as far as I can tell, but that might just be Japanese sentence structure thing. 刀が死体の血を吸った・・・? (Katana ga shitai no chi o sutta?) or "Did the sword absorb the blood of the corpses...?"
>>284420592The second incident that she remembers seems to be different in Japanese, though that might be a nuance thing. It was 隣同士の諍いの時も (Tonari dōshi no isakai no toki mo) or "Even the quarrel between neighbors".
>>284420689Mao uses -san here and says 使い手のあなたも斬らねばならない。 (Tsukaite no anata mo kiraneba naranai.) which seems to be "You, as the user, must also be cut".
>>284420745
>>284420755!
>>284420785Mao says you to the sword here.
>>284420849
>>284420883
>>284420907End of chapter!
Three pages in full color to celebrate the 100th chapter! Well, originally. The cover is on the next two pages. Per Furinkan: "There was also a Twitter contest to give away three original drawings of Mao by Rumiko Takahashi to celebrate the 100th chapter and 1,000,000 tankoban copies of MAO sold. Entrants had to follow Takahashi's official twitter, share their thoughts on MAO and use the hashtag #MAOを推したい (I want to recommend MAO)." I guess you went up with promotional hashtags like that if you name your series something as common as MAO. July 7th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: What would be the first thing you'd do if you were suddenly split into two?A: Sleep."
>>284421012The cast. Pretty much...
>>284421034>Tenko made itSecret final boss? It's more likely than you think.
>>284421034Skipped the art spacer. VIZ decided to just use the term katashiro 形代 rather than translating it to talisman, charm, paper doll, straw doll, etc. like they sometimes do. This term refers to an effigy or substitute used in Onmyodo, typically a paper doll but not always as we've seen in this series.
>>284421115
>>284419897and nanoka comes in with a second cover!
>>284421134The sword's response seems to have been rewritten significantly to simply convey sentiment as the original line for it here was こんな形代など。 (Kon'na katashiro nado.) or "A katashiro like this." Presumably disliking the use of it.
>>284421214I still can't quite get what term is being translated as "will" here. It is nen something, but I keep looking up each kanji and getting confused and the Google keeps saying it just means "very carefully" which clearly isn't right.
>>284421311
>>284421346Sometimes, I look at the machine-translated translation and it is so direct that I feel I don't need to say anything. Which is great, it makes me very happy when they can write the dialog directly and keep it sounding natural. Of course, that does leave me with little to say since I really don't have as much trivia from old interviews for MAO. And me making jokes about it doesn't quite fit.
>>284421397
>>284421411?!
>>284421426Uh, this seems to be translated a little indirectly. Nanoka specifically refers to Mao's Byoki's Blood (which is always a little goofy to me, but whatever). It mentions that the blood is poisonous to the sword (hence the image of Mao and his cut and the blood on the sword's tip). And as such, the sword was afraid of the blood flowing into it through the hilt. I mean, it ultimately is the same conclusion, but yeah.
>>284421560Her line here is basically "My Byoki's blood should work too". So, yeah, the sword didn't quite know that Nanoka has the same blood yet.
>>284421590
>>284421600Mao seems to use an expression here 危ない橋だったぞ。 (Abunai hashidatta zo). This literally means "That was a dangerous bridge" but it basically means "That was a huge risk" or "That was a risky gambit".
>>284421657Mao's response seems a little less kind in Japanese, but there might be some nuance I'm not getting. It was うん・・やっぱりわかっていないな。 (Un... yappari wakatte inai na.) or "Yeah... it seems you still don't understand.". As for his comforting words to Kanae, he seems to say that it is impossible for the police to suspect you rather than stating that he will do something to clear her reputation.
>>284421746
>>284421763The sign is translated to Keep Out which is reasonable, I feel but in case you're curious, it originally said 外来者出入禁止 (Gairai-sha shutsunyū kinshi) or "No visitors allowed" directly, but equivalent to "No Trespassing" or "No entry" or "Authorized Personnel Only" etc. etc.
>>284421841End of chapter. This time, Nanoka did say yokai rather than ayakashi. The store name is written as 冥命堂 with the furigana めいめいどう. It is romanized here directly. 冥 seems to mean dark or deep, 命 means lifespan or command and 堂 is hall.
Per Furinkan: "The MAO promotional video was released this week on July 15th with voices by provided by Yuki Kaji (Mao), Hiro Shimono (Hyakka) and Toshiyuki Toyonaga (Kamon). Hiro Shimono was just getting out of the hospital after contracting the Coronavirus." Here's the link: https://youtu.be/i9cPoASccC8July 14th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: What's a book you wish you could erase your memories of and experience for the first time again?A: Sangokushi."
>>284422009Sir here was だんなさーん。(Dan'na-sa ̄n.) here. Furinkan seems to have interpreted it as "husband" or "darling" if their summary is anything to go off of, but we have seen it used as meaning master or boss in MAO, so that might be wrong.
>>284422073Mao addresses Meimeido with -san. Honestly I assumed that with 堂, it only referred to the place but maybe it is common for people to have that kanji in their name too. I wouldn't know.
>>284422109VIZ went back to saying just "hagunsei" rather than "hagunsei blade" or "hagunsei sword" which would be more accurate to the Japanese. Nanoka refers to the skin resembling 鉄 (tetsu) or iron. Mao refers to him as a 玉鋼 (tamahagane) ayakashi, whatever that is. Split up, it becomes "jewel steel" which obviously isn't a thing. I guess he's like diamond? Anyway, both Mao and Meimeido refer use the term ayakashi rather than yokai here.
>>284422073I originally translated it as husband back in the day too, but I'm more inclined towards the "boss" interpretation now. It's funny to imagine them being married, though.
>>284422239>玉鋼It's basically just a specific type of Japanese steel.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamahagane
>>284422239This is reasonable translation, but the Japanese seemed more direct and said it originally referred to gaining prosperity through killing and stealing. Seems the family was using it solely via placebo effect for a while now.
>>284422310Hehe. Nanoka's response was 違います。(chigaimasu). I don't know how formal it is, but presumably a little bit more than "no way!" but it made me laugh so I feel it is fine. >>284422295Oh, well, don't I feel silly. When Google wasn't translating it, I assumed it was because it was made up rather than because English uses a loanword for it that is a direct romanization. Thanks for the info.
>>284422408The last line seems to have originally referred to the sword coming back to life again.
>>284422434It is kind of fun flipping between this page and the last because the bottom Nanoka panels are very similar. I wonder how she determines how to ink the irises.
>>284422469Hehehe. Nanoka's line in the top panel is just いや... (Iya...) which means either no, no thanks or a filler word like um or why, depending on context. Any of those seem to work. VIZ seemed to have interpreted it as no thanks.
>>284422561Furinkan has a note here: "In this chapter Nanoka also starts to practice a series of hand gestures/mudra called "Kuji no in"." This is the term used here by Uozumi. 九字の印. Though Wikipedia calls them Kuji in without the no. Anyway, these previously came up because Mao used an attack called Nine Cuts which is based on these in part. I didn't realize Furinkan took their iconography for this from the manga itself. Though Wikipedia has a very similar diagram to this. Oh and Nanoka says これさあ、無理でしょ。 (Kore sā, muridesho.) or "This is impossible, isn't it?" rather than "I suck at spells" but this seems to be a common way of stating dissatisfaction at your own ability. At least, I hear it a lot in manga and anime.
>>284422650
>>284421657Nanoka being recklessly self-destructive is quickly becoming the defining part of her character
>>284422658Hm... tiger... hm, tiger, tiger, tiger. Bird... birdy, birdy birdy.
>>284422702
>>284422718!
>>284422730
>>284422745He refers to a 虎のバケモン (Tora no bakemon) or "tiger monster" here.
>>284422760
>>284422784End of chapter. By the way, Meimeido doesn't bother with an honorific for Mao. Got reminded of that since Nanoka doesn't use one for Soma.
Furinkan notes that: "Also, Soboutei Must Be Destroyed by Kazuhiro Fujita and Ponkotsu-chan Kenshochu by Tsubasa Fukuchi both ended in this issue of Shonen Sunday. Takahashi sent Fujita a congratulatory doodle." Furinkan doesn't seem to have a link to the doodle. I don't know if Fujita posted it anywhere, but if it is out there, maybe someone can find it.July 21st, 2021. Author's note:"Q: What are things you'd open your otherwise closed wallet for?A: Manga volumes."
>>284422820Soma still uses -sensei for Mao and uses -san for Nanoka.
>>284422838Mao doesn't use an honorific here.
>>284422845Rather than murder, he referred to blood-sucking incidents, 吸血事件 (Kyūketsu jiken).
>even OP almost forgot today was Mao Tuesday and got late
>>284422884Per Furinkan: Soma reveals in this chapter that the old name for the cursed sword is "Akanemaru" which is written with the kanji "地血丸" meaning "blood circle". Also, VIZ went with relic, but the term Nanoka used was 呪具 with the furigana じゅぐ (jugo) or "curse tool".
>>284422922Come back to life or revive itself again, like in the previous chapter. >>284422891Thursday, and I've honestly been later. I was practically falling asleep half an hour before I started so I am glad I started when I did.
>>284422954Soma specifically said he didn't want to meet Mao again like this rather than specify fighting.
>>284422968
>>284422980Bit of a pattern to these fights, yeah. Otoya as always being MVP. But yeah, Nanoka specifically says fire techniques will beat the metal attribute tiger. Reminding us that beasts (mammals) are metal attribute.
>>284423031
>>284423040Talisman here is 呪符 (jufu). Curse tag or curse seal. You get it.
>>284423072!
>>284423080
>>284423174Has the scar from before.
>>284423031Again, I feel like the question mark is a little superfluous when Otoya is clearly already doing what Mao needs him to do.
>>284423184
>>284420020are those his brains?>>284420256>>284420320>the head family essentially and Kanae is marrying out of it. son-in-law's problem now fuck them in-laws>抜いたから・・・ (Nuitakara)i've always learned that kara is more of a "because/since" type thing (or "from")抜いた meanwhile is the past tense of nuku "to draw, to pull out" etcso i think it'd be "because (I) pulled (it) out">>284420506>being passed as a wedding gift is even more appropriate as daughters of samurai were said to carry it in the belt of their wedding kimono. If you look up images of these blades, you often see women holding them.it's a wedding present blade?! r- rumiko-dono...
>>284423265
>>284423276Like butter.
>>284423288End of chapter. Nanoka states that he's become completely a minion of them. あんた完全 に御降家の手先に・・ (Anta kanzen ni Go kō ke no tesaki ni)
殺す覚悟 (Korosu kakugo) is the original title. This is technically accurate, but it means willingness to kill.Per Furinkan: "This issue of Shonen Sunday also advertised a new Inuyasha Q-Posket and some official Mitsuru Adachi and Rumiko Takahashi hashtags to use on Tiktok." I guess I'll post their screenshot of the latter since there's a Mao image in it.July 28th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: What do you believe are two things that when paired together cannot be defeated?A: Soba and onions."
>>284423384Per Furinkan: "Soma's uniform is a duplicate of Hakubi's which is a type 45 kai Imperial Japanese Army uniform."
>>284423410!
>>284420569>the protagonist of Blood+saya? >I haven't watched the seriesi did back when it adult swim aired itsaya wields a full-sized sword though, with a custom bend and-- oh hey, funny similarity, saya's blood is poisonous too (to a specific type of creature though) but she has to actually draw blood which is why it has that custom bend so she can cut herself and then it flows down the blade through that fuller/groove in the middlehere's the first opening, you can the blood going down the middle of the blade near the end>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GepvEq1HGyU
>>284423418Mao doesn't really mention his curiosity, just saying that he is in a place where you get asked about your resolve. Essentially, the crossroads thing, but a bit longer. I like Nanoka's face here.
>>284423429Looks like both their eyes turn red, as well
>>284423466I don't know if this Mao's dialog in the last panel is correct. I do see the word "ichi" in there, so maybe it is saying one blow? But the Google translation of it is completely different. The line is 一時的にでも斬れるなら勝機はある! (Ichijitekini demo kirerunara shōki wa aru!) and Google is suggesting "If I can manage to cut him, even temporarily, there's a chance of victory!" which seems different to me. But again, machine translation, take it with a grain of salt, learn Japanese and draw your own conclusion.>>284423274Yeah, I was using the word "as" to mean "because/since" in this context and emphasizing that no specific subject was used.
>>284423508
>>284423519Yeah, based on this, it seems Google was more correct.
>>284423526Hehehe, I love Nanoka. You see why I don't want her to have a weapon?
>>284423531
>>284423535
>>284423553He does actually say Nanoka here. No honorific though.
>>284423561Pretty cool. This is a bit cheesy, but the original line might've sounded a bit bland. I do think it fits Soma more though. そこで見ていてください。(Sokode mite ite kudasai.) or "Please keep watching there."
>>284423485oh yeah! well saya's eyes are already a dark red even when calm, they glow brighter in fight modeand there are scenes that suggest they're actually glowing
>>284423586I think there might be two meanings in Soma's statement here that VIZ missed. The original line was ぼくは殺せる。 (Boku wa koroseru.) or "I can kill". I can see how you can interpret it as "I am not able to kill her" but I think it is also intended to be him psyching himself up.
>>284423608
>>284423624生意気だ。(Namaikida.) or "Cheeky/Saucy/Cocky/Impudent".
>>284423643
>>284423662
>>284423682End of chapter!
Furinkan mentions that: "Comics Natalie ran a small blurb with Rumiko Takahashi this week talking about her fondness for Ryoichi Ikegami (Crying Freeman/Sanctuary) and Riichiro Inagaki's (Eyeshield 21/Dr. Stone) new manga Trillion Game." I think Furinkan translated all of Takahashi's comments, which are pretty brief."I think it's quite fine to say that Ikegami-sensei and Inagaki-sensei are a unique combination.Haru has a masculine feeling that is not unfamiliar in Ikegami-sensei's work, but Gaku is a very modern boy, although his glasses are held high, he is not a confident young man. This series keeps thrusting into my heart across the frames of the page. This is a quite fresh and fun work in the world of Ikegami-sensei.I think Trillion Game is an interesting original that can be established even with pop drawings, but it is a very impressive concept because it is drawn with Ikegami-sensei's realistic gekiga-style.The girls are also attractive. Especially Rin-chan, who was recently introduced, who is lovable and cute. For me, a longtime fan of Ikegami-sensei, a very exciting work was born yet again. "Furinkan also notes that this is a double issue, so there was no chapter the week after this.August 4th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: Do you have a movie poster that you thought was excellent?A: Drunken Master."
>>284423765
>>284423771
>>284423777
>>284423806
>>284423817I will admit, this makes it a lot cooler than just a sword, but I still really liked the berserker style with just clawing at stuff and hitting them with whatever.
>>284423832
>>284423841
>>284423849!
>>284423895I don't know if Soma actually knows it is her blood. He just says "Poisonous... blood?!" Also, he states that she is unconscious.
>>284423923
>>284423934
>>284423976The ever versatile barrier.
>>284423982!
>>284423991As we've come to expect, they've gotten away. But we kept the sword.
>>284423998I couldn't find what term was used for acolyte here. I think maybe there wasn't one? Also, Mao's final line here was different. It was あのまま持ち続けていたらどうなっていたか・・・ (Anomama mochi tsudzukete itara dō natte ita ka...) which seems to mean "What would've happened if she continued to hold onto it...?", so possibly wondering both about if she would die or maybe if she would kill.
>>284424040Sometimes, Otoya just asks questions for readers just picking the series up, I guess. Mao's response was similar, but different. It was 少し分けてやらないと。 (Sukoshi wakete yaranai to.) or "I need to share a little bit."
>>284424058End of chapter...
Cover was originally in full color.August 18th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: What's a sushi material you can't live without?A: Sea urchin and fatty tuna."
>>284424075I guess he's cleaning up pieces of himself? He hasn't had time to get dressed fully.
>>284424103
>>284424113Nanoka mentions she was passed out from the middle of the fight.
>>284424148Per Furinkan: "In Japanese a twisted-paper string is known by a few different names such as "koyori", "kamiyori", or "kanzeyori" (紙縒り, 紙縒, 勧世縒)."Mao uses こより (koyori) here. Meimeido says 紙のこより (kami no yori). He specifically states that it breaks easily. Will here was 意思 (Ishi).
>>284424208Oh, by the way, Meimeido referred to Nanoka as 嬢ちゃん (Jō-chan).
>>284424148I think that makes at least four times Nanoka has passed out at the end of a battle>Mantis: Arm cut off>Shiranui's shikigami: Accidentally gave Mao blood>Souma and monster Mao: Tackled Mao to pull off the needleAnd now this. Won't be anywhere near the last time, either.
>>284424235汁 (shiru) can mean either juice or soup. And Mao's line suggests that it has progressed in its fermentation, not that it is complete in it. Which makes sense given how old his last one was.
>>284420755that's why her eye was bleeding?!>>284420785ugh>>284420849>Mao says you to the sword here.what?>>284421012>use the hashtag #MAOを推したい (I want to recommend MAO)." >I guess you went up with promotional hashtags like that if you name your series something as common as MAO.i've also seen some official japanese tags that are... long-ish like that, longer than what we think of for tagsbut also yeah i wish mao had some other word or subtitle to help with general tagging/searching...>Q: What would be the first thing you'd do if you were suddenly split into two?>A: Sleep.one rumiko to sleep, the other rumiko to work
>>284424268Mao seems be feeling directly responsible here in Japanese, saying 私菜花にあんな事をさせていたのか・・ (Watashi Nanoka ni an'na koto o sa sete ita no ka) or something like "I can't believe I let Nanoka do something like that..." Not sure if that sentiment comes across with the localization here.
>>284421105all of tenko leads are just her getting rid of her enemies to consolidate power over the tokyo area holy shit anon your mind...
>>284424301The wording here in Japanese is really funny to me so I'll post the whole thing: 私のために・・・あれは・・・噂に聞いた恋人つなぎ。(Watashi no tame ni are wa uwasa ni kiita koibito tsunagi.) which Google Translate translated as "For me...? That... that's rumored lovers' hand-holding technique." Machine-translated nonsense, obviously, but it did make me laugh. Maybe you could use the term fabled here, but I feel like that's very cheesy.
>>284424384She's such a goof.>>284424299Rather than saying "The cursed sword is hiding inside her", he said something like "You were hiding inside her".
>>284424408
>>284424419Guess he is aware it is hers. Well, she definitely wielded it. I don't remember if he knows that is what is in her body. Presumably he does, I feel like that came up in the last fight?

>>284424474輩 (yakara) was used here for hoodlums or thugs again. It means a "group of" basically.
>>284424408>he said something like "You were hiding inside her"well not quite, this is an example of the mtl guessing a pronoun the sentence>体内に潜んで憑いていたか...has no pronoun at all, and japanese verbs do not carry that information the way verbs do in other languages (i think there's one verb form in japanese that means it was done to the speaker, but this is not that)
>>284424517The girl's line here seems different to me, but it is possible that machine translation is failing me again. The original line in the first bubble of the third panel was 蓮次さんはもらいっ子の家で色々苦労したらしいんですよ。(Reiji-san wa morai-kko no ie de iroiro kurō shitarashī ndesu yo.) or "I heard that Renji had a lot of difficulties growing up in the family that adopted him." So, either machine translation is really mucking this up or VIZ really rewrote this for no reason. I guess either one of you guys will correct me or we'll see if the backstory is expanded upon later (I feel like it is, but my memory isn't the best).
>>284424598Per Furinkan: "Otoya asks Nanoka why she has a bag to hide Akanemaru in. Nanoka says it is because if she was caught with a katana in the Reiwa era she would be arrested. Otoya tells her that she would be arrested for openly carrying a sword in the Taisho era as well. Sword law and legality has changed much over the history of Japan. One of the earliest "sword hunts" was enacted by Oda Nobunaga in the 1500s who sought to limit the samurai class's access to weapons. The illegality of carrying swords during the 1920s (Taisho era) stemmed from the Meiji Restoration in the 1860s. Widespread sword confiscation was not completely enacted until the American occupation of Japan after World War 2."I do find this little exchange funny. But yeah, Furinkan does mention the original lines, where Nanoka said something like "In the Reiwa era, if you carry an exposed blade, you'll get arrested immediately" and Otoya says something like "Here in the Taisho era, a sword ban is actually in effect as well, though". Otoya specifically uses the term 帯刀禁止令 (Taitōkinshirei) which means "Ban on carrying swords". There seems to be more information about it under 廃刀令 (Haitōrei) or "sword abolishment edict". >>284424575Gotcha. Sorry. This is unfortunately going to keep happening since I can't really spend even MORE time on each page. I appreciate the correction. >>284424499Also, nen, got it. That makes sense. When I was translating 念が入って (Nen ga haitte), Google kept suggesting "with great are" or "with attention to detail".

>>284424728Chinese lute here was 月琴 (gekkin). As I mentioned before, this is known in English as yueqin (from Chinese) or moon lute. And yes, Reiji refers to Nanoka as ねえちゃん (Nē-chan) or "big sister".
>>284424771End of chapter. Reiji's powers are insane, honestly. You really gotta have the plot work for you for this to be fair.
Original title appears to just be 駆け引き (Kakehiki) which appears to just mean bargaining/haggling/tactics/strategy/diplomacy/etc.August 25th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: Summer means a lot of Summer homework. Could everyone talk about how they approached finishing their summer homework when they were children?A: I took my assignments seriously and did them all right away."
>>284424816Recap. Also, Reiji's reaction is a bit less cliche and maybe a bit more appropriate since he's intended to be somewhat clandestine, despite his grand title. It was just へえ、知ってたのかい。 (Hē, shitteta no kai.) or "Wow, you knew that."
>>284424846I appreciate VIZ interpreting it as whacking him with the lute, since it does seem in character for Nanoka to consider that option, but the original line seemed to be more vague. It was この距離なら月琴奪って・・斬れる・・・? (Kono kyorinara gekkin ubatte... kireru...?) or "At this distance, could I snatch the moon lute and cut him down?" As in defeat, presumably. The last bit was basically just "cut", so maybe "cut the lute" or something else is the implication.

>>284424920Reiji doesn't specifically refer to bargaining chips, but the sentiment is the same. If the woman isn't about to die, Mao will resist. And he notices that he seems serious in the last panel.
>>284425046Little surprised that last panel isn't a thought bubble. >>284424966Good to know. Appreciate it.
>>284425073Now we got Hagunsei and Hagunsei Blade on the exact same page. I guess it isn't a big deal, but...
>>284425087The third panel is not nearly as direct. It is just something like "Was it to separate me from that Nanoka girl?". Mao's response was also a little less moralistic, he just said she has no connection to the Goko Clan.
>>284425109
>>284425116He doesn't say "give a crap" but he does seem a little rude about it. He says he is not interested in the Goko Clan's ゴタゴタ (gotagota) which means trouble, mess, quarrel, dispute. One of those words based on sound effects.
>>284425156Here, they translated katashiro 形代 as decoy. I mean, it did sort of serve as that, but it definitely isn't its primary purpose as we'll see.
>>284425170The shikigami falling over shouldn't be funny to me, but it kind of is.
>>284425178てめえ (temee) as expected.
>>284425187Mao being seemingly having a good handle on all five elements does lead to some spectacular moments, but it does make me a bit less excited to see him fight compared to other characters.
>>284425242End of chapter!
September 1st, 2021. Author's note:"Q: Are there any picture books you read as a child that have left a lasting impression on you?A: Rieko Nakagawa and Yuriko Yamawaki's Guri and Gura."
>>284425298I'm not sure if this is the correct interpretation of the original line. The original line was ったく食えねえ野郎だぜ。 (Ttaku kuenē yarōda ze.) or "What a useless guy" or "Seriously, what a good-for-nothing".

>>284425444
>>284425449
>>284425458Beckoning fire seems like a good translation. It was 誘い火 (Sasoi hi). Also, VIZ messed up and didn't bold the T in LEFT. I honestly can't blame Nanoka though.
>>284425487Hyakka and Nanoka seem a bit more mean to each other in this moment in Japanese with Nanoka asking if he checked properly and Hyakka calling her てめえ (temee) in his rebuttal.
>>284425523Based on what I see in the dialog and the next couple of pages, I think Renji's line here is mistranslated. I think the dialog is intended to come prior to the bottom panel. Unless I'm wrong. The line was ったくあの野郎。ふざけやがって。(Ttaku ano yarō. Fuzakeya gatte.) or something like "That damn guy! He's really pushing it." presumably referring to Mao, not Shiranui.
>>284425555Bug ingredients was 虫の素 (Mushi no moto) was in bold and in quotes, amusingly.

The original title was 慈善家夫婦 (Jizen-ka fūfu) which means "The Philanthropist Couple". Furinkan notes that: "Takahashi published a "Wednesday's Diary" in Shonen Sunday this week. She announced that her editor, Kento Moriwaki, was leaving after five years working together. She thanked him for all his help with projects both manga-related and otherwise. She said she looks forward to working with her first female editor, Riri Okamoto and says she is glad that she is easy to get along with." I'll post an image of it after the dump.September 8th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: Are there any instruments you've always wanted to play?A: Ukelele."

>>284425881Nanoka is scared to go home alone and Hyakka explicitly says they are going somewhere more dangerous in the Japanese text.
>>284425930Per Furinkan: "... one can see three sets of lines in various configurations. These are called "trigrams". The trigrams are strongly associated with yin and yang (in Chinese mysticism) which gave form to onmyodo. Each trigram represents an element, a direction, an animal and an attribute." Also, Mei uses -sama for Hyakka and Shiranui here. She also refers to the garden as the Garden of Longevity or 延命の庭 (Enmei no niwa), ie. "Garden of Life Extension" again.
>>284425964Oh. Right. Ugh...
>>284425978Per Furinkan: "Hell pot - Mei describes the pit the [men] are in as being like a "hell pot" (地獄の釜). A "hell cauldron" or "hell kettle" would also be appropriate translations. This is a form of punishment in hell where sinners are stewed in a pot. There is a saying in Japanese "to open the lid of the hell pot" (地獄の釜の蓋も開く). This refers to the 16th day of the New Year and also during Bon festivals when even a sinner in hell and the demons who torment them are given a rest. " Vision of hell feels like a good translation if you have none of the cultural context, but I still wish we got that cultural context.
>>284426023Furinkan also refers to these men as yakuza, which I understand given the tattoos we see on some of them, but I certainly don't think all of them are.
>>284426038
>>284426042Oh, Furinkan also mentions that this hell pit does appear to function in a similar fashion to a kodoku.
>>284426050Mao mentions she took Soma through the barrier.
>>284426056This was a chapter title drop in the original Japanese.
>>284426082...
>>284426090This sort of stuff always hits me very hard. I can hardly stomach it, even if it is nothing explicit.
>>284426119End of chapter, end of volume. Sigh... So, yeah, that line from the two girls was mistranslated (though even the original Japanese text was intentionally misleading). Thanks anyone who read along, but also thanks anyone who reads it after. I completely understand. This volume went by a bit quicker with all the action scenes. Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything MAO related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread.I will be returning next Thursday to dump Volume 12 of MAO. Thank you for reading. Hope you enjoyed!
>>284426166Thanks OP. Fairly Nanoka-focused volume, and not a lot of main story, but that saves me some effort on the timeline, at least. I am quite fond of how Nanoka develops as a character over the course of the series. She doesn't have much to do with the Heian era stuff, but I don't really mind that since it plays into her desire to actually be useful in some way, which in turn drives a lot of her recklessness. And tying it back into the shared Byouki blood aspect with a weapon that literally spews out the blood from her body is a pretty clever bit of writing.
