Alright, it is Thursday and I am gonna post the twelfth volume of MAO. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to MAO after the dump. In addition, as MAO is atypically plot-heavy as a Rumiko Takahashi manga, please be mindful of others and use spoilers tags when discussing things that are revealed later in chapters that have not been dumped.MAO is Rumiko Takahashi's current ongoing series, a dark fantasy manga with a more serious tone than most of her other major series. I highly recommend it, as there genuinely is a lot of intrigue.Previous thread: >>284419897I will be using the official localization of the manga volumes by VIZ (despite my issues with it). Keep in mind that the nature of the writing in MAO and this localization in particular has resulted in some mistranslated lines. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
Original title was 月琴 (Gekkin). This refers to this specific lute in Japanese. The same characters are used in Chinese and it is pronounced yuèqín. September 15th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: Tell us about the most beautiful scenery you've ever seen.A: The thick forests seen from the top of the Mexican pyramids."
>>284581594Mother dearest went with てめえ (temē) in the first panel. The dear seems to be a VIZ addition, but it does match his expression.
>>284581659Old creep was クソじじい (Kuso jijī) or "damn old man" essentially. The final line here was "男の子が好きなお客さんもいるって聞いたことあるけど..." (Otokonoko ga sukina ogyakusan mo iru tte kiita koto arukedo...) which seems to just be "I've heard that some customers like boys...".
>>284581745Per Furinkan: "Tsuyu (露) is written with the kanji for "dew" or "tears"."
>>284581766Nanoka is a bit less exposed to this sort of thing. Her line here in Japanese was basically the same. It was そんなひどい親・・・いるの・・・? (Son'na hidoi oya... iru no...?) or "Are there really such terrible parents...?"
>>284581659Getting right into it this volume
>>284581825In the first panel, the client is referred to as 物好き (Monozuki) which can refer to someone of eccentric tastes or an oddball. Though, it also means someone who is curious. He also mentions that this was "again", so it seems that the client Renji fought previously was also in the market to purchase Renji outright. Tsuyu refers to her parents respectfully as 父さん (Tōsan) and 母さん (Kāsan). The other girls refer to Tsuyu as Tsuyu-chan.
>>284582005...>>284582000Yeah, I just sat down and am immediately getting gut punched.
>>284582055Renji refers to his sister as ねえちゃん。(Nē-chan.). The master of the house is referred to as 旦那さん (Dan'na-san).
>>284581520for someone associated with fire, that's a lot of green
>>284582100...
>>284582120Tsuyu doesn't use honorifics for her brother. Not that that matters.
>>284582168>>284582195twice
>>284582195First panel was てめえよくも (Temē yokumo), so "How dare you!" with the very rude you.
>>284581745that も works as "also, too"
>>284582251Funeral offering here was referring to kouden. Per Furinkan: "Kouden (香典) is money that is given to the grieving family during a funeral. The money is meant to help offset the cost of the service. In this chapter Tsuyu's parents use the money to get drunk and make no efforts to give their daughter a proper burial. They kouden money is given to a grieving family inside a special envelope called a "bushuugi bukuro" (不祝儀 袋). The envelope is decorated with a decorative paper cord called a "mizuhiki" (水引)." Dad refers to it as 口止め料 (Kuchidome-ryō) which is hush money. The birth being recorded is referred to as having no 戸籍 (Koseki) which means family register. They then refer to him as a ひどいやつ (Hidoi yatsu) or "terrible guy".
>>284581659>>284582005>>284582120>>284582195>>284582251and that's how you end up with enough rage to control the kakachu
>>284582429The thought was "ああ... 最初から、こうすれば良かったんだ。" (Ā... Saisho kara, Kō sureba yokatta nda.) or "Ahh... I should have done this from the beginning".
>>284582483He mentions brothels in the last panel as well.
>>284582483>>284582542a lot of rage
>>284582542Nanoka refers to the lute as a 形見 (katami) or memento of his older sister.
>>284582621Hyakka specifies that the lute was created in the Taisho era, as opposed to all the tools passed down or stolen from the Goko Clan.
>>284582621first time mei's heard that too judging from that "..." which I guess would be the case considering they first met to reattach his arm
>>284582673Nanoka's lines here were "ええ・・・? こんな話聞かされたらなんか・・・" (E e...? Kon'na-wa kikasa retara nanka...) so the usual Japanese bit of vagueness "Ehh...? Hearing a story like this makes me feel...". Hyakka specifically refers to that matter and the assassinations being different.
>>284582754End of chapter. The "no regrets" and "won't regret" quip are VIZ inventions. Of course, I do think it is in line with his character. After all, the money is being handed out to the unfortunate and not exactly pocketed.
September 22nd, 2021. Author's note:"Q: Do you have a "morning routine" you do upon awakening?A: Turn on the TV."
>>284582886Hyakka doesn't quite finish saying what he'll do to every last bug in Japanese. Presumably, squash here is a metaphor for burning.
>>284582754>the usual Japanese bit of vagueness "Ehh...? Hearing a story like this makes me feel...".and it's such a weird unnecessary vagueness it's a thought for pete's sake, and hearing a story like that makes anyone think "that's awful/horrible/fucked up"/"what's wrong with people"
>>284582914!
>>284582937Renji says to Hyakka てめえは一番邪魔くせえ。 (Temē wa ichiban jama kuse e.) so "You're the most annoying one of all" with the vulgar form of you again.
>>284583024
>>284583041Nanoka's line here was as expected, just "え...".
>>284583068Mao has referred to the sister's 怨 (en) or "grudge, resentment" and Renji's 怒 (ika) or "fury, anger" as being two separate things twice now, so I figured I'd mention it. Here, it was put together as grudge in the second panel. The second bubble in the third panel was in a different font, so it was the directive, I guess. The full line was 器に宿りし汝の魂を悼み鎮める。 (Utsuwa ni yadorishi nanji no tamashī o itami shizumeru.) or "I mourn and appease your soul, which resides within this vessel", more or less.
>>284583237Mao refers to his talisman here was reifu and Furinkan has a note regarding it: "The paper talismans or charms that Mao uses are called "reifu" (霊符). Reifu are a specific type of talisman known more generally as "ofuda" (お札), which are generally Buddhist or Shinto in origin. However the type used by Mao, reifu, were introduced to Japan from China and are Daoist. Ofuda were introduced to Japan via onmyodo before eventually becoming appropriated by Buddhism and Shintoism. These reifu are from a collection of 72 called the Taijō Shinsen Chintaku Reifu (太上神仙鎮宅霊符, "Talismans of the Most High Gods and Immortals for Home Protection")."
>>284583262!
>>284583273
>>284583332
>>284583387!
>>284583404Not a very cheery volume, yeah.
>>284583424!
>>284583438
>>284583451VIZ went with plant. The typical translation for it seems to be wood. It was "tree" once before, but yeah.
>>284583520Hefty amounts of smug.
>>284583404Grisly
>>284583537End of chapter. She doesn't outright call them enemies of hers, simply stating that if they are enemies of Shiranui, there's nothing that can be done.
September 29th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: Who or what are you currently showing support for?A: The Hanshin Tigers."
>>284583628Surely there's a more reasonable way of asking that question.
>>284583657
>>284583716This is all accurate, though rather than trauma or a loanword for it, the term 辛い過去 (Tsurai kako) or "painful past" is used instead. Renji's situation definitely is both traumatic and painful. Oh and I wanted to apologize for saying Reiji rather than Renji last time a bunch. And for missing a page. Last thread died before I could apologize about all that. It was a bit of a mess in hindsight.
>>284583817Calling it "something else" might seem a bit casual for the gruesomeness of it all, but the original Japanese seemed to be similar in that regard. He said マトモじゃねえよ。(Matomo janē yo.) or "That's not normal." or "It's crazy".
>>284583862!
>>284583877Lot of exclamation mark bubbles this volume. Also, I do find it funny that even in situations like this, Mao shouts out -sama. I get it is second nature and it doesn't exactly take long, but it makes me giggle.
>>284583907
>>284583922This thing showed up before, but this might be the first time it has gotten a name. Though the name is just 海龍 with the Furigana (かいりゆう), so Kairyū as it has been romanized. It just means sea dragon.
>>284583877I hope we get a dragon/Genbu showdown at some point
>>284583998Wouldn't want our heroes to get immediately incinerated with no chance of fighting back.
>>284584038Exorcists here was onmyoji. And yes, this was a chapter title drop originally. I guess they felt "giant curse" sounded better than "giant cursed tool" but wanted to keep consistent. The term in Japanese is 呪具 (noroi-gu) which means "curse tool" or "cursed implement" or "cursed ingredients". I personally prefer they always translate it consistently, though I think I prefer "curse tool" over "cursed tool".
>>284584129
>>284584159!
>>284584188These two pages are well done.
>>284584202Mei says he buried them in advance.
>>284584240I wonder if the anime is going to have a loud noise for the eyes too. I don't think I ever noticed it when I was originally reading. It is a bit goofy. The sound effect is カッ or "ka", it seems. The site I use for sound effects (thejadednetwork, a site that appears to have been abandoned and is super busted on modern stuff) refers to it as "flashing ones eyes open in rage" as one of the many definitions.
>>284584188Jesus Christ, how spooky
>>284584477
>>284584570End of chapter. Accurate translation. Yes, Nanoka working as she does.
Cover was obviously originally in full color. I like this one. October 6th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: Tell us some four character sayings you think are cool!A: Completely ridiculous. (Shoushishinban)."
>>284584676Skipped the spacer.
>>284584688This time, the Japanese did just say Hagunsei.
>>284584743
>>284584751Pretty cool. I wonder if they will pick a really dark red for it for the anime. Either way, it prob won't feel the same.
>>284584785This time, Nanoka's line was a "But..." rather than an "Eh...".
>>284584815Mao's "perhaps" does feel pretty clear but in Japanese it was even clearer, it was そうだな (Sōda na) which can mean "That's right", "I see" or "It seems." Also, I think this might be the first time I've ever seen Rumiko Takahashi not bother redrawing for her little recap panel. It seems to be just the actual panel but smaller. I might be misremembering, but it really does look odd after so many years. Also, VIZ had to reorder the words a bit for the final panel and the panel on the next page, but the content seems the same.
>>284584676It's a nice little page. I've got a wallpaper version of it saved from when it was up on Sunday's website, I can post it after the storytime.
>>284584936Oh, I guess Mao did specifically refer to the children and women as being 弱 (yowa) or "weak" which ties it in with the "weakness" mentioned before and the chapter title. Though it is pronounced differently. 弱点 (jakuten).
>>284584815Poor Nanoka just wants to help
>>284585021
>>284585045!
>>284585057No honorific from Renji here. Mei uses -san for Renji. The final line to me seems to be referring to the current situation rather than afterwards though. あなたうてなにもその腕ではできないでしょう。 (Anata ute nani mo sono udede wa dekinaideshou.). Or "You can't do anything with those arms".
>>284585045I'm starting to think Mei just like lifting people up with her vines
>>284585199Hehe, Otoya so cute. Hit and strike were cut in the original, it seems.
>>284585365
>>284585379Go for it!
>>284585402
>>284585425Otoya says the water energy from inside the dragon's body. Presumably, the use of the word bleed by the localizers is being used as a descriptive word here rather than a literal one, but it could work either way. Previously, Hyakka's sheesh was simply a tch, but now it is a くそっ。(Kusoo) or "Damn it".
>>284585469!
>>284585475Mei refers to the soil being eroded or eaten away.
>>284582673>after all these yearssays the guy who still has strong feelings about things from hundreds of years ago vs renji's 10 years where he's encountered other children in similar situations>was created in the Taisho eraone of these days we'll get another panel of them *saying* taisho era when the kanji are there, but that day is not todayhe *says* kono jidai "this era" (i think there was at least one time they *said* taisho?)>>284582937renji's just as confused as they are hehe>>284583237>the sister's 怨 (en) or "grudge, resentment" and Renji's 怒 (ika) it's 怨み urami and 怒り ikari>>284583262>does the grudge run that deep?i would imagine that finding more children in their situation reinforces+justifies it>These reifu are from a collection of 72 called the Taijō Shinsen Chintaku Reifu (太上神仙鎮宅霊符neat
>>284585562End of chapter. Hyakka's first line here seems different, but maybe Google is failing me. It was 逃がさねえってか。 (Nigasanē tte ka.) which seems to mean "I won't let you escape" but maybe it means something else in this context. Mao also refers to the garden by its name rather than calling it evil, but yeah. Furinkan notes that Otoya is seen with his shovel here, but he's often seen with his shovel (even if it is hard to pin down where it is when it is not on panel). They theorize it is mainly for shoveling bugs for Mao's kodoku, but it just seems to be handy in general.
I thought maybe there was a secondary meaning to the original title, but there doesn't seem to be. 鞄の手 (Kaban no te). October 13th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: When one says "ultimate seasoning" what comes to mind?A: Onions sauce."
>>284583387i forgot hyakka could do that>>284583404the guy beating the other guy with his hand>stop hitting yourself>>284583438>yoink>>284583520>It was "tree" once before, but yeah.that was for the elemental wheel, but in speech it was "wood">>284583578i guess i'll note it heremei seems to be one of those polite-speech characters, as in she uses polite speech for everybody and doesn't use the casual/informal tone at all
>>284585714She did not say onions sauce. >>284585583Oh, sorry, one day I'll remember to check the furigana for these lines. As for the urami and ikari thing, I just messed up. I split things up and I got valid definitions, so I got confused.
>>284585735
>>284585778Otoya's line here didn't seem questioning in the original, simply restating that Nanoka is bonded to the sword by blood.>>284585727Makes sense given she has that maid-esque look.
>>284585842Hyakka also refers to the garden by its actual name. He states that ultimately, it is a cursed sword and that they will both fall. The sentiment is the same, but the words seem a bit different.
>>284585910Nanoka is a bit less specific and requests ways to avoid fainting or medicines to prevent blood loss. Hyakka responds in kind saying that there's no such convenient thing.
>>284585958Mei's dialog here seems to be made a bit more fancy. The original final line was just すぐ元どおり。 (Sugu gen-dōri.) or "It'll be back to normal soon". Maybe this is to capture the politeness of her speech in other lines? Or maybe this line is more prim than I think it is.
>>284586008
>>284586043VIZ didn't really change much in the third panel, but here are the original lines. 地獄に行くまでがんばって生きてください。 (Jigoku ni iku made ganbatte ikite kudasai.) which is something like "Please keep living and doing your best until you reach hell". I see the ganbatte there. The response back was simply おう。(O u.) or okay/alright/yeah etc.
>>284586125There it is.
>>284586133Feel free to imagine a cartoony belch if you feel silly.
>>284586162
>>284586167They redid the string. Nanoka asks specifically if Natsuno knows how to use it properly. The response was similar, but it seemed to be more specific in saying that she'll have to learn by using it.
>>284586201Natsuno specifies cloths, kimono and shoes. Nanoka's seemingly flippant "So?" was えっとそれが・・・? (Etto sore ga?) or "What about that...?"
>>284585958Nanoka and Hyakka working on their comedy routine again
>>284586234
>>284586253Minor recap. Appreciated, since my memory is a sieve. The Japanese text seemed to specify right hand rather than cursed hand. Nanoka hesitates in Japanese as well, but specifically asks if she can help.
>>284586296Natsuno's line in the second to last panel is ただし無理はさせないよ。 (Tadashi muri wa sa senai yo.) which seems to mean something like "I won't let you overdo it" or something to that effect. I guess VIZ went with this to convey the "I'll be there to help" and "I won't let her pull out the sword" connotations. Also, Otoya says that Nanoka is that type of person in the final panel, which made me laugh. But so does "There's no stopping Miss Nanoka".
>>284586380End of chapter. This is getting into stuff I remember reading relatively recently, which is odd since I read up to Volume 22. I guess this volume was only two and a half years ago... Maybe I just thought this section was particularly memorable. Oh and they don't mention the suit, they just say he's being careless.
I love this cover. Also, as you might be able to tell, the clunky title is the result of a direct translation. I mean, what can you do? The original title was 西洋館の薬局 (Seiyō-kan no yakkyoku). As Furinkan notes: "The term in the title "seiyoukan" (西洋館) is a western-style building. This is a term for the uncommon western style buildings that existed prior to World War II. When western architecture became more ubiquitous after the war this term was less commonly used."October 20th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: What's the first thing that goes in your cart when shopping at a convenience store?A: Pepsi and Lemon." Furinkan's note: "Lemon is a brand of green tea."
>>284586518
>>284586540!
>>284586550Not seeing more kids die in this volume.
>>284586585Guess I shouldn't speak too soon.
>>284586616
>>284586518I seem to recall going with "Western-style pharmacy" myself
>>284586540Oyota's let himself go...
>>284586629VIZ correctly went with Ayakashi this time. Natsuno's line seems wrong to me since clearly, it is both a hand and a body. The line was 手の主・・・か。(Te no shu ...ka.) or "The owner of the hand... ?">>284586662That's what Google said as well, but I guess VIZ was worried that only the building is western-style but the pharmacy is normal otherwise? I don't know.
>>284586946The sign did say Pharmacy in English in the original as well.
>>284586973
>>284587016
>>284587040Rather than referring to it as being like a vacuum cleaner, Nanoka simply refers to them being sucked in. And yeah, he's gross.
>>284587062
>>284587068True form.
>>284587149
>>284587149This guy's another one of those cases where I think the anime would be well within their rights to tweak the design a little (if they ever make it that far, at least)
>>284587164I guess she's out of poison or thought these would be more effective.
>>284587183This location stuck out to me.
>>284587200
>>284587225End of chapter. Kind of sad that this probably the first bath they've had in a while...
Oh, by the way, the last chapter was the first one to not feature Mao at all. Outside the cover page. It reminded me of the Urusei Yatsura cover where Lum was on the cover and just said she wasn't in this one. I think she ended up showing up near the end anyway. October 27th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: Tell us what you use as BGM while working.A: Variety shows I've recorded."
>>284587305Right into a spread.
>>284587318These vats with the dissolving corpses... Something about it.
>>284587341The ayakashi isn't speaking metaphorically here. In the Japanese text, he refers to them not having internal organ contamination. He mentions that after washing it thoroughly, he'll have a fresh liver.
>>284587400In the Japanese, he refers to the medicine as having a rejuvenating and beautiful effect on skin. Nanoka questions the idea of being used for something like that. It seems the ayakashi does refer to the sword as a 短い刀 (mijikai katana) as in "a sword that is short" rather than 短刀 (Tantō) which refers to these sorts of swords. He doesn't outright call it cute, but that does seem to be the implication.
>>284587471!
>>284587479Japanese doesn't really have a distinct word for venom and poison. I assume VIZ went with venom since it is a snake.
>>284587506Finally activated those. Glare is probably more accurate than sheen. Though looking at it now, I think it is a completely different sound effect. It is now ギン (gin) which refers to glaring or staring.
>>284587566
>>284587597I was going to tease Nanoka since she clearly used some of her blood, but in Japanese, it seems she specified "lost too much blood".
>>284587616Furinkan rambles on about salamanders here for some reason: "We see the salamander ayakashi spit a substance that crystalizes and hardens over the door. Salamanders appear in many mythologies and legends and were believed to have fire-resistant properties. Pliny the Elder wrote in his Natural History that "a salamander is so cold that it puts out fire on contact. It vomits from his mouth a milky liquid. If this liquid touches any part of the human body it causes all the hair to fall off and the skin to change color and break out in a rash." While the salamander does secrete a foul tasting substance on its skin, it is not known to spit any sort of liquid as shown in MAO." I don't know how relevant that is. I checked if the salamander's line here was a chapter title drop, but it seems VIZ had a bit of fun. He just said that he won't let her into that room.
>>284587649Oh, here's the chapter title drop. He mentions that it would be terrible if it was broken.
>>284587676Ugh...
>>284587683
>>284587701!
>>284587727Might be a little meta with the localization, but not really. Nanoka said if she were to pass out in a place like this without Mao around, those kids are dead.
>>284587772End of chapter. Hm...
>>284586438I think it's a shame this didn't turn out to be a vampire storyThen again, maybe that would have overlapped with the Akanemaru origin story in the last volume too much
Another color cover. I feel we are getting these more than RIN-NE. Then again, it feels like there's a similar amount of color pages in total. Chapter title was 血の一撃 (Chi no ichigeki). This is accurate though the suggestion of "A blow of blood" and "Sanguine strike" appeal to me.There's a thing regarding the Shogakukan Newcomer Award that I'll post after the dump.November 1st, 2021. Author's note:"Q: Are there any pieces of furniture you were particular about when choosing to buy them?A: My dining room table and chair. Beyond that is my living room sofa."
>>284587960Skipped the spacer.>>284587913He does have that look.
>>284587978
>>284587990
>>284588014Mentions livers specifically. I believe. 肝 (kimo)
>>284588070
>>284588077Another spread! I like this.
>>284588128In pieces.
>>284588141Nanoka's got cut off here with her "Natsuno-sa..."
>>284588162His teeth situation is variable.
>>284588218The bubble with ?! was originally just !?. I get them changing the font to match the rest of it, but I wonder why change the order. They're pretty consistent about this.
>>284588243She pulled out the big reifu, I guess.
>>284588265This is a great panel.
>>284588277
>>284588303
>>284588327
>>284588341The term used here is 護り刀 (mamori-gatana) like in the previous volume. These short blades were handed to brides as part of wedding traditions. Modern Japanese weddings apparently just use a kaiken pouch with cardboard in it.
>>284588419End of chapter. Here, Nanoka says 護る刀 (Mamoru katana) as in "protective sword" rather than 護り刀 (mamori katana) or protection sword. Either way, this bit obviously reminds me of Inuyasha. I feel like this didn't end up being that important in the long run and might've even been contradicted in that series. Honestly, it is a bit weird to have that be a part of this sword too given that the smithy guy said this sword was only going to get riches by killing and stealing. We'll see how much it matters in this series. At least there's the reference to a real thing with the bridal custom and whatnot.
The original title for this chapter is 土鈴 (dorei). This literally means earthen bell or clay bell. Furinkan notes that: "[these bells] are still made today, though in modern times they are often manufactured in the shape of animals or mascot characters such as Hello Kitty and are often painted in bright colors."November 10th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: It's starting to get cold. Tell us of an ingredient you just can't eat hot pot without.A: Tofu."
>>284588535Heh.
>>284588553Hehehe. The heart was in the original. The response was いや甘いだろう。 (Iya amaidarou.) which in this context means something like "No, you're too optimistic". or "No, that's going too far.". It literally means "No, it's sweet".
>>284588601
>>284588615Nanoka's line in the second panel may seem like a sneaked in TL note, but she clarifies that it is in the lower abdomen in Japanese as well. As for the chant, Furinkan says: "Natsuno has Nanoka chant "Rokkon shoujou" (六根清浄) in order to try to draw out energy from the earth. Rokkon shoujou means "the purification of the six senses of perception", though in a slightly less literal sense it simply means "cleansed mind and body". It is a Buddhist term that is often chanted when climbing a mountain, yet despite its Buddhist origins it has been appropriated into Shintoism as well. The six senses that are referred to are sight, smell, hearing, touch, taste and consciousness."
>>284588660Nanoka doesn't specifically say it is cute, though she prob is thinking it. Her original line was ありがとうございます (Arigatōgozaimasu) or "Thank you very much".

>>284588481Why is all the text on this page tilted, Viz?

>>284588727
>>284588733A bath must feel really good after that nightmare scenario. Though Nanoka obviously bounces back easily.
>>284588823Love the last three panels here.
>>284588660Tanden was also the thing Mao instructed her to hit the frogs in back in volume 4, and he also wrote "rokkon shoujou" on the bamboo stick he gave her, you'll recall.
>>284588838Glad to see him again.
>>284588857Per Furinkan: "The ashes that Uozumi uses to chase Byoki away (護符の灰/gofu no hai/talisman ashes) is the same technique that Mao used to reveal the needle embedded in Shoko Katsuragi's head in chapter 84.">>284588847Oh yeah. Makes sense.
>>284588733I've always liked this page, it feels rather ominous
>>284588869Oh and last page where it said "modern era", it was just "this world". I checked the furigana, nothing special. Also, this page, the line was まさか・・・ (Masaka) which Google translated as "No way..." which made me laugh.
>>284588909Yui didn't bother with an honorific here. Nanoka went with Yui-chan. Also as Furinkan notes: "Also as last mentioned in chapter 84, we see that in the present day Nanoka is still having to wear a mask at school, indicating the severity of the coronavirus that was still occurring at the time."
>>284588937The localization in the second panel makes a lot of sense to me and I would not nitpick at it, but I do find it interesting that in Japanese, Yui-chan says that Nanoka is probably going to hear it soon anyway, which is basically the exact same sentiment but a different way of phrasing it. Also, Nanoka's line in the final bubble was in fact just "え..."
>>284588984End of chapter! What does it mean?!
Original title is 床下 (Yukashita) which just means Under the Floor. November 17th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: Tell us something you've bought recently and thought, "I'm satisfied with this purchase."A: Clothing made with natural fibers."
>>284589017
>>284589026I checked, Japanese text did say Taisho era (in the furigana as well) and the reference to "my own time" was 現代 (gendai) or "modern times", "present day", etc.
>>284589087
>>284589100Hm.>>284588876Agreed. I consider MAO at its best as a series when it makes you feel that tension. I feel it sets it apart from her other works.
>>284589118
>>284589128The oh no here was まさか (masaka) as was the previous page's "Could it be?"
>>284589144Per Furinkan: "When Byoki comes back through the gate the shop sign behind Mao says "Store Fujika Miscellaneous Goods" (店商藤加 雑貨)." We see this store a lot honestly. I assume Kato was a misreading by VIZ. Sundries does mean Miscellaneous Goods, though it is not a term I hear often.
>>284589165Byoki's line here wasn't mistranslated or anything but since they're cryptic, here's the original: "待っていろ・・・もうすぐだ・・・" (Matte iro mōsuguda) or "Wait... it's almost time".
>>284589194
>>284589207He's okay.
>>284589165Such a majestic creature
>>284589216Grandpa's here is cute, but the original line did have him hesitate a bit when saying he's... okay. He also assumes the memories of the accident scared Nanoka, presumably in an anxious sort of way as implied by the localized line here.
>>284589263...
>>284589280Good page.
>>284589287Per Furinkan: "The earthen golem that patrols outside of the five-sided temple is a "earthen doll" (土人形/tsuchiningyo). This is a term is used for low-fired clay figurines that are typically painted."
>>284589297The term Furinkan defined is the term used on this page actually. Whoops.
>>284589287Don't you hate it when the cat brings in dead stuff?
>>284589320End of chapter, end of volume. Love this page too. Thanks anyone who read along, but also thanks anyone who reads it after. I completely understand. This volume went by a bit quicker with all the action scenes.Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything MAO related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread. So, next Thursday falls directly on Christmas day, so I am going to do the storytime on the following Sunday rather than skip a week, so the 28th. Be aware. Volume 13 will be dumped on the 28th! Keep that in mind.
>>284589356>Volume 13 will be dumped on the 28th!SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY But **NOT** Next Sunday The SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS >AFTER CHRISTMAS
>>284589356Thanks OP, and have a merry Christmas! Whoever could this mystery man be? Perhaps consulting the chart will give us some clues (or perhaps we don't need hints to figure this one out). It's nice that Nanoka's also getting another mentor figure in the form of Natsuno here. Mao's a good guy, but Nanoka's feelings for him mean that he's not quite as effective as a teacher as he could be.
I think Renji and Mei are also starting to develop a fun relationship. Their personalities complement each other nicely, they've got fun banter, and the fact that they're both hardened wrongdoers but still somewhat sympathetic lends the whole thing a nice bittersweet flavor.
Here's the back cover of Volume 12 of MAO of the original Japanese edition.

>>284587960Per Furinkan: "Rumiko Takahashi and Gosho Aoyama had comments on the winner of the 88th Newcomer Award which was given to Arata for her manga Rolling With Yu (ローリング・ウィズ・ユー). Takahashi stated, "It was the best entry this time. The picture gala is sober, but everything flows quite naturally, the monologue is on point, various emotions are drawn well, and the brightness of "Yu" is also a good effect that makes you wonder what will happen to this "child" in the future. It makes you want to continue reading it."" I had a hard time finding much about the Newcomer Award. I'll be honest, I only know of it because Takahashi got an Honorable Mention in the 2nd one which lead to her official manga debut with Those Selfish Aliens (勝手なやつら) after one of the winners couldn't be published. This was back in 1978. I still find that so crazy. Anyway, as mentioned, if you search the Japanese title, you can read the entire thing but it is in Japanese. Not much information online about it. >>284589551Thanks for doing this. And merry christmas.>>284590451>>284590640Great stuff. I like that cover. I am using Google to both parse the text and then to translate the text. Please take everything I say with a grain of salt. I try to include the actual Japanese text so Japanese-speaking people can correct me if there is a MTL error or simply human error in assessing the nuances. I honestly never intended to talk this much about localization, but someone pointed out I can just get the raws during Inuyasha and I've not been able to stop myself since. Furinkan and the other anons are to be trusted over me.

>>284596195I understand entirely. The raws are available on nyaa and I do recommend them if you're interested. I am not trying to deceive or present my "translations" as anything other than a report on perceived differences between the original and the VIZ version. Honestly, I used to just say stuff like "I am pretty sure the localizer changed something here" without even looking at the raws and I wasn't always right, but someone asked me to just check and now I'm here. I hope this doesn't feel like a big betrayal.
