I think Irakofags and Fujikifags should end this discussion with a blood feud. Just a person to represent each side
>>
This ending could've been prevented if Irako vs Fujiki wasn't the first round of the tournament. Had there been plenty of bloodshed beforehand, Tadanaga wouldn't be seething só hard

>If in one’s heart he follows the path of sincerity, though he does not pray, will not the gods protect him
>As everything in this world is but a sham, death is the only sincerity

This was the second time reading through this, initially picked it up out of interest generated from Togashi's comments in Vol. 34, as well as the iconic image of Tiger!Kogan descending the stairs to Irako, blade in mouth.
All I can say is it's peak. Happy New Year

As well as 50 backup anons on each side to jump the opponent should their fighter lose.
Such are the rules of a blood feud after all.

A masterpiece like usual.
There's something about Shigurui that always sticks in my mind. The utterly bizarre juxtaposition of the disgusting and beautiful with neither overwhelming the other, the crushing, oppressive absurdity of the setting, the ultrasexual imagery that somehow doesn't feel sexual at all.
A lot of works have plenty of worse stuff happening in them but Shigurui actually feels downright demonic at times. I really mean that, by the way. The imagery plays a lot into it (especially during some fights where the scenery is warped, very obvious during Seigen's vendetta against his dojo), but even how the various egos try to ride and fail against that complete insanity make it extremely repulsive.
Hopefully I don't sound too much like a schizo here, but this is probably one of my favorite pieces of art on a purely aesthetic basis alone. I'm not surprised in a sense the author didn't bother with the rest because drawing this would take a toll on anyone's mental health.

Thanks a lot for the ride and happy new year to everyone.

>new season of rurouni kenshin
>the rival of the arc busts out nagare-boshi
>>
In the first duel, Fujiki Gennosuke defeated the demonic mumyo
sakanagare of Irako Seigen and diagonally cut off his torso. At the same
time, the two women Iku and Mie, who were behind the curtains, each
stabbed themselves in the chest and both died.
In the second duel, Isoda Kinu's naginata delivered a kabuto-wari
("helmet-breaking") blow to Zanami Kanzaemon's forehead against all
odds.
In the third duel, Kurokawa was unable to exact his revenge as he was
struck down by ukifune, the best technique of Tsukioka Yukinosuke of the
Toda School.
In the fourth duel, despite suffering a cut to his left knee, Sasahara
Shuzaburo speared Kutsuki Gannosuke from his right shoulder to his
spine, but even so, the dying Gannosuke threw a knife into Chika's chest,
the object of his forbidden love.
Before the official start of the fifth duel, the opponents Tsuruoka
Junnosuke and Fukada Gonoshin had already drawn their katana and
begun to fight, but in the end both unwittingly adopted the same stance,
shishi hanteki ("the lion's counter"), collided with each other, thrust their
short sword into each other's side and died simultaneously.
In the sixth duel, Kojima Sozo was wounded by the shuriken from "the
crosscutting windmill" attack, but he took advantage of an oversight by
Tsugami Kuninosuke to run his blade through. However, he died
immediately afterwards from the shot fired by the chief of the riflemen,
Kenmochi Jisuke.
To be killed was the fate that naturally befitted Tsugami, for he was a spy.
>>
During the seventh duel, Kataoka Kyonosuke deliberately allowed his
opponent to destroy his specialty, the "hanging thread" stance, and despite
Kuroe Gotaro's "flying dragon sword" that Kataoka felt on his left
shoulder, he killed his opponent.
In the eighth duel Shindo pierced with the tip of his spear, but Komura
skillfully dodged it, cut the ropes that held the curtains and, grabbing one
end of the cloth, began to spin around Shindo until he rolled him into the
curtain. Finally he slit Shindo's throat.
In the ninth duel, Kurita Hikotaro cut through the groin of his opponent,
the brave warrior Shibayama Hanbee, with a long military record behind
him, and after knocking him off his horse he punctured his throat.
The reality, however, is that instead of Hikotaro his father Jirodayu fought,
and instead of Hanbee his son Shinzo fought. Both hid their faces with
their helmets and face shields and faced one another without either
knowing the other was a substitute.

It really does feel otherworldly. For however long it takes a reader to start abd finish it, they’re completely immersed in 16th century Japanese culture; you pick up customs, come to understand why its people think and speak thenway they do, learn to navigate the extremely obtuse, simultaneously rigid and fluid social norms. And then its over and you feel like a time traveler, your own time suddenly alien to you

I think someone recommended The World is Mine in one of the previous threads and I'm about 10 volumes in. At first it just felt like mindless nihilism and I almost dropped it but once Mon-chan meets the giant bear monster it gets really interesting. I can see how this inspired Fire Punch.
>>284933900
I'm afraid to start it in case the team doesn't come back to it, but at least we're finally getting the rest of Exoskull Zero. It's interesting how after he finished Shigurui his revisit of Kakugo no Susume inherited a lot of that Shigurui imagery. In a way Kakugo's journey here feels like the author trying to find meaning in the despair Shigurui brought on him. In Kakugo no Susume there's still a humanity to fight for, but in Exoskull continuity everything is utterly fucked but Kakugo keeps on his path no matter what anyone else says.

Yeah the first few volumes are a hurdle and maybe even a waste of time on the author's part. There isn't even a tolerable character or the slightest bit of meaning until the hunter shows up. I can't say it's my favorite or that I even recommend it but I can't say it hasn't been interesting. If there's any point to it so far I think it's just trying to show every possible response and explanation to senseless death and evil. Even the self serving, suicidaly sympathetic, or just plain stupid ones. Also I think the author just enjoys drawing insane violence and disasters.
>>284937713
It better. I've been waiting for someone to get that piece of shit besides Mon-Chan for chapters and chapters. Mon-chan too frankly. I hope the ending is as horrific and explosive as possible after all this.

The revenge duel was a drawn out slug fest that displayed several secret techniques. Even a layman would know shit was crazy. Whereas the tournament was over after one swing, and nobody would know the context even if they were high level martial artists.
Also, I suspect the daimyo in the audience were likely not especially skilled with the sword.

It's been long since I read it, but if I remember right it goes
>Jirodayu and Hanbee are rivals
>Hikotaro, Jirodayu's son, will duel Hanbee in the tourney
>Hikotaro is tied down and replaced by his father, who knows his son will lose
>Hanbee throws his backs, so his son Shinzo replaces him
>Shinzo dies. Hanbee kills Hikotaro in revenge
>Jirodayu calls for a duel with Hanbee, they kill each other

I wonder how much it would cost to get Yamaguchi to draw Fujiki splitting Tadanaga from neck to asshole when he demanded he behead Seigen, as a narrative recurrence of him potato sacking his childhood bully. He actually would get married to Mie in heaven after they were both shot in that world.

For the manga the general consensus is the latter. Which is sad because killing Irako fucking broke Fujiki out of his autistic robot mode. I believe that once he did that last act of Samurai autism he was home free to being a real human being but his last act as a robot was also Mei's last straw

it's quite sad because if he refused he would had to die anyway, but mie would have killed herself with him, like iku. like this it's like their bond was broken. it is not shown but i suspect fujiki didnt lack regrets in his last moments, just like ushimata his thoughts were the ones of man, a simple man wishing for love, not of a samurai.

I was expecting this to be more graphic, we only see the before and after, not the during. The ending was as explosive as I hoped though. Literally lmao. I guess that was the natural endpoint of a manga so heavily focused on bombings. I may read Kiichi at some point but that and a Shigurui reread back to back was exhausting. No more fatalistic manga for me for a while.

>his wife and kids died but it's ok since he retained his HONOR

It's a mix with the latter being the final straw. In Punished-Fujiki she saw a man reborn - and if he defeats Irako there's many birds with one stone:
1. She can finally put to rest the longing she had for Irako
2. And she has to put to rest the longing for Irako, because the jealousy of Iku and the downfall of her clan in his hands gnaw at her.
3. After Fujiki's victory she maybe able to start a new lifestyle that's completely different to the one that raised her
As soon as Fujiki kowtowed and began to behead Irako's corpse, her new hope was again dashed and she wanted out right there and then.

The mouth really is the source of all disaster,
That the scabbardless sword that Master Kogan wielded, that killed a monk earlier really does inflict the Doom status.
That monkey's head, a snake oil that supposedly a medicine only sought by the wealthy, which was offered as a gift to Gennosuke, by Fujiki in fact most likely, tastes like ass.

Throwing your sword in front of a collection of daimyo in what was meant to be an impressive and honorable duel, is basically career suicide, if not literally suicide.
Musashi fought illegal duels and used as many dirty tricks as it took to get victory in back country feuds. Not the same as tournament dueling.

Did you know Yamaguchi had another feudal Japan manga before Shigurui or even Kakugo no Susume? It's just nonstop batshit nonsense and reinvents itself at least twice over the course of only nine chapters. There's a few early designs for later characters and the early tactical fiends too. It's amateur compared to his later work but it's interesting to see where he started.

A short punchy 80s sci-fi action movie in manga form by the guy who did Ajin.
>Souboutei Must Be Destroyed

A great storytime OP. It's only my second time reading Shigurui and thanks to the threads I picked up on a lof of details I missed the first time.

Anyway now I'm in the mood for more Samurai stories, so let's get some more recommendations going.
For me it's:

>Hyouge Mono
Obligatory mention, but there's always someone who hasn't read it.
>Kubikiri Asa
From the Lone Wolf and Cub duo, don't see it mentioned as often.
>Reiri
Relatively short and bittersweet. About a girl who becomes the bodydouble for Takeda Shingens grandson.

Irako didn't have any shackles on when entering that match, other than standard feudal ones.
His issue was that he left Kogan-ryuu and the duel behind, while Fujiki lived and breathed revenge.
Seigen spent is last days caring for street kids, fantasizing about getting a high position in government, worrying about politics, and banging whores (before killing them because they were mean to a starving child). With a burst of sadistic pleasure at finally killing off Fujiki once and for all in the middle of it (after he previously put his life on the line defending him).
Fujiki spent his time obsessing over Seigen and lashing out at people in anger stemming from his obsession with Seigen. Before finally reaching an inner peace where he totally dedicated himself to killing Seigen at all costs, free from any trappings of honor or respectability.

Not true, ambition brought him incredible success. Irako's problem is he couldn't control his desire to have everything he wanted right then and there.

I love it it's unironically the

meme. It's both their biggest pronounced flaws rising to the top. Irako's habit of fucking around once he gets comfortable and Fujiki's robotic autism

Through the wrong ways, hence his ambition was bad.

His ambition was the shackle, he never could let go that after his closure with Kogan ryu

>fantasizing about getting a high position in government
This is the biggest proof of being bound to ambition. This even led to being blind and conned

No, very much a Western comic but you could probably stretch the definition to say that UY is a manga if you place heavy emphasis on the idea that Sakai is a Japanese cartoonist who has a lot of Japanese themes in his work. I think this line of thinking is a bit too much to ask because Sakai spent most of his childhood in Hawaii, studied art in Hawaii, and worked in the comic industry as a letterer for Groo the Wanderer where much of his art style is influenced from. Also that UY is for Western audiences (doesn't even have a Japanese release or anything iirc despite having a niche fanbase there)

I caught the beginning of this storytime and the end, totally forgot about it and missed like 90% of the chapters. Now I have something to look forward to, going through the archive for missed kino posts.

One of my favorite pieces of fiction and still a banger after 5 rereads. Honestly the test for getting sterilized or not should be a written analysis of Shigurui.

Yeah there's very little I can find fault in within this manga. Even Toad's story is good, the only issue is that it's pretty much left unresolved and you need the novel for the rest, basically reducing it to (good) filler.

So if Irako wanted to prove that a nobody could climb high, why not just point to the six-fingered peasant boy who reached a station arguably higher than Shogun?

It takes place near the end of the Bakumatsu so it features a bunch of characters from the last arc.

Because for most of the story Irako wasn't trying to prove shit; he was an ambitious bastard rising as high as he can as quickly as he can. Late in the story he was beginning to self actualize and not be so selfish, and perhaps he would look to that six fingered guy as inspiration, but what he would have done with that mindset we will never know.

I want fascistoid homo manga. Already read Golden Kamuy multiple times, and while I would call Kimetsu no Yaiba morally fashy, it's not homo enough. Guess I gotta do some digging.

Unquestioned rules determined by ancestry, overcoming struggles against onthologically evil enemies, absolute obedience of main protagonists to tradition or to inner calling (Inosuke). Kinda talking out of my ass, but that's the impression I got from the manga. An other example would be Metantei Conan which I would call deeply conservative instead of fascism-adjacent.

Have you read Innocent by the way? It might just scratch that itch.

Good idea! Read it back in the day before it was finished and before Rouge came out, should read the whole thing. Simply forgot about it for 11 years h-haha...
