Thank you, that makes me feel a little less insane after reading endless praise for the series.
I try to be pretty open about things even if I don't like them, try to identify things others could identify with, etc., but this one has genuinely almost nothing redeeming going for it so far. It's so fucking trite and juvenile.

when you reach about 20 or so chapters, that should be enough to have an informed opinion. it's not something you care about that point.

I liked it because there are points in this story that give just about everyone some nuance and it takes turns that I didn't expect, but were sensible in the end.

That was about 10 years ago, so 23? I have a strong proclivity towards psychological thrillers and horror, so this hit all my checkboxes. I also coincidentally happened to be writing a story with a young protagonist whose mother is a serial killer who makes him complicit with her murders - so I felt a sense of of resonance with it. Seeing the protagonist struggle to break free of his father and forge new relationships will simultaneously endangering them was stimulating for me.

That said, I agree with >>285603074. If you aren't engaged by chapter 20, you unfortunately aren't the audience for the work.

That's fair, I do feel like I'm in the target audience for this one, so I'm surprised by just how much it's bouncing off of me. I've definitely had the same occurrence when writing some of my own stuff, so I can understand that connection.
Unfortunately I'm well beyond ch. 20, so I guess I'm in hate-finish territory now.

Sucks, but it happens. Since you've decided to finish it, I hope you enjoy the climax, if nothing else. But I found the quality to be rather consistent as you suspect -- so I wouldn't hold my breath on any dramatic change midway through.
