Mari should have never existed. Instead, Misato should have been given Mari's role in the Rebuild movies. Even Anno knows Misato End makes more sense for Shinji and Shinji's character development would have been massively improved if Misato's son was actually the biological product of Misato x Shinji, rather than the product of Misato x Kaji. My gut feeling tells me that Anno in his old age, has now become too afraid of controversy, so he was forced to give up on a Misato Ending or revealing that Misato's son is biologically Shinji's son.
