Not going to say Thrice was a great movie or anything because the middle was a bunch of shit mecha fights when it should've been developing the characters, but the ending sequence was really, really well directed. That beach scene with Shinji and Mari was absolute kino with the direction and music setting the theme. Most people seem to have an almost political concern with this movie that always comes back to the whole theme of Anno abandoning Eva, that is, making Eva into something that they don't think it should be (i.e. not EoE). But if you don't have that yourself, you can really appreciate some of the gems it have amongst its mediocrity.

Rebuild is unsatisfying garbage because the characters' emotional interpersonal conflicts are never resolved and are instead abandoned in a sequence of masturbatory meta commentaries on the series itself. It's as if a character drama film ends with people just running away from each other and forgetting it all. It has no lesson to teach and ultimately serves no purpose as a story. Evangelion was interesting because it had character arcs. These movies have Shinji say "okay, giant robot bad, I'm gonna erase it and forget everyone but that one inconsistently written girl with no actual character or relevance to the story". It's lazy and dumb.
