I've decided to fully commit to watching the anime and failing to get into Gintama years ago. Also considering reading the first volume of the manga we in the west only got less than a third of the manga officially translated.

All I know about this show is that it's parodies of other shonen and then apparently have serious story moments later on. Is the manga also like that? Are any of the movies or specials good?

I grew up watching mostly Shonen, but have been reading a lot of Urasawa and Berserk

The greatest series to come out of WSJ in the early 2000s. It reminds me of Patlabor on TV, in the sense that it tackles multiple genres and excels in every single one.

It's a comedy.
Basically, you could pick any random episode or season to start and it would be le funne. You'd miss the story arcs that way though.

-Its a comedy with some battle shonen arcs and dramatic moments
-It is good but inconsistent, it has lot of weak/bad arcs/episodes
-The anime is better than the manga overall but the Silver Soul arc is way worse than the manga version, with bad animation and pacing. I recommend the anime because the VAs are great
-There are 4 movies: Benizakura and Yoshiwara that adapt those arcs. Be forever yorozouya is an anime only arc (watch it after ep.265) which is good. The other movie, Gintama the Final, is just the last manga chapters so is not extra
-If you have a lot of time I recommend it but you need to be familiar with the medium and be patient

Again, it's probably my favorite anime/manga, but mainly because of my subjective and selective nostalgia. The ending was a bit too serious and dramatic, but overall it's probably the best comedy I've read, perhaps rivaled by Prison School. Gintoki is funny but cool, wise and not too annoying like many other MCs. And there's some pretty clever world design that allows for magic, sci-fi, and meta bullshit to happen quite naturally. This whole thing kinda gives me the Doctor Who vibes, for some reason.
