>>287647940It has consequences but only for poor people thats why the US will never do anything about it. They only care about billionaires
>>287645492I get your point, but I feel like manga will be a lot harder to commodify, because people don't normally collect manga like they do with Pokémon cards or American comic books, since most manga readers either buy individual volumes because they're the completed editions that has drawing mistakes fixed and they don't have nearly as much resale value, or they read manga online.
>>287646782This. Graded manga copies are not really a market right now and probably won't ever be. The problem with Pokémon was that there already was a massive scalper/investment scene, l it was just brought to the spotlight by Logan and became way bigger. This scene doesn't exist in manga, as there really isn't perceived value outside certain series that have run out of print. Yeah, series like GTO are very expensive but the average manga collector just wants their modern series which are readily available and are not resold for profit. The average Pokémon card collector wants the cards that DO have perceived value attached to them. That's the issue. This doesn't apply to manga. People are more likely to collect modern series like Jujutsu Kaisen that are printed to death than they are old clamp volumes or GTO that are extremely expensive.
>>287646782>>287648475Another big issue is that these scenes tend to want "hype" and that's difficult to generate with something as mass produced as manga.Your only options for "hype" gradings are>First appearances (magazine releases of a first chapter, iconic moment (ie Goku SSJ), or last chapter)>First printing (a specific volume dated to a specific date)And not many of these are actually that valuable or that sought after. If you're buying the first appearance, you're already within a niche within a niche within a niche. You need to be interested in importing, buying things in Japanese, buying things for their showpiece value more than anything, and be aware of magazine releases. Outside Japan, this is a subset of maybe a thousand people, and inside Japan everyone who is interested already got what they wanted because these magazines aren't actually worth much. They're garbage, 300~ yen books filled with crummy newspaper grade paper. If you're after first printing, then you're still interested in much of the prior stuff, but unlike books (where first printing typically means different bindings, covers, often different internal contents), the difference between a first printing tankoban and a current printing tankoban is near non-existent beyond how aged the paper is. So outsiders won't see value in this like, say, buying a first edition Harry Potter book 1. What's rare in the anime and manga scene is just what's OOP 99% of the time and that's all, but you can't collect that either because your "empire" crumbles the moment it goes back in print (see Sentai's release of Nadia on BD, which tanks from $400 to like $60 when the GKids BD came out, or how Evangelion prices normalized).
I don't give a fuck if some asscancerous scalpers want to make it impossible to buy 40 year old copies of WSJ. manga isn't like a trading card game where I need actual copies of the item to functionally play the game (yes I know I can make proxies but then you get into their legality for sanctioned formats etc.) the point is, if I want to read a manga, I can just find a scan online or a reprint of a reprint of a reprint of the tank.
>twitter screencap>logan paul>mangas
>>287648618Another big issue is how ingrained piracy and ease of access is into the medium, so again, you won't have people going "I'd love to have that" like you would with say, someone wanting a copy of Silent Hill 1 for the PSX (which averages $200+ due to collector markets and isn't available legally on anything else). If someone wants, say, Hunter x Hunter's 1999 anime, which you would pay roughly $1200~$1500 to own legally on DVD, they'd just pirate it. If someone wanted to read Gash Bell, they'd pirate it instead of paying an arm and a leg for an OOP and incomplete English release. This also becomes hard to really sell past a point. You got Dragon Ball, One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, but how far can you dip beyond that? There's hardly any classic series that get the same kind of pull in terms of name recognition. Sailor Moon, Saint Seiya, Yu Yu Hakusho, JoJo, Hokuto no Ken, and that's about it for the pre-00s in terms of what the average westerner being baited by this might recognize. You could dip into the 00s with Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, and Soul Eater, but these were mass produced far beyond the ones I just mentioned. And if you jump to the modern stuff, you're getting jackshit. This doesn't even get into the big issue of these guys coming so aftermarket that the market is already thoroughly poisoned by bootlegs for these older ones. There's just nothing within anime and manga collecting to truly get people with (which is the whole point of speculation in this way).
>>287645492The funny thing is that, you can tell this dumbass is a tourist, because picrel is the actual first appearance of Goku just like the Romance Dawn one-shot is the first appearance of Luffy
>>287645492same thing with happened with retro games you know where to go

>>287648961i'm pretty sure he just uses PSA (which is a known scam, and quite literally has been since day one. the first card they ever graded was that honus wagner that gretzky owned and they knew it was cut at the corners to make it look nicer but still gave it high marks anyway. nevermind a billion other controversies they've been involved in since then.
>>287648961I may shit on the anime/manga community a lot, but I'd always give it to them how they're not as easily gullible or as retarded as the comic book cucks.
>>287648475Yeah, the only manga that's really expensive is specific foreign releases that went out of print ages ago and can't be reprinted because the local publisher doesn't have the rights any more (or doesn't even exist any more), and in those cases the value drops like a rock if someone else gets the license and publishes a translation. Slabbing and grading that stuff is retarded.

>>287653556Nothing will change if you don't complain at all. Have fun paying up the ass for manga, you deserve it.
For real?
>>287653567I still don't understand how he's still free. He's involved in what, 3 crypto rugpulls and 3 scam apps at this point?People have been jailed for less.
>>287653629>paying>for manga?????????????????????¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿??¿¿¿?
>>287653629Just buy digital, it's cheaper and more convenient. All the Japanese are doing it as well.
>>287653512I actually don't necessarily disagree that discussion of scalpers and manga graders potentially hiking up the price of manga as being on topic, but orienting it around Logan Pull criticism is a bad idea
>>287653629Why? There's nothing to worry about. Graded manga makes no sense because if you put it in a case, then it defeats the purpose of the book. At least with Pokémon cards being graded, it's a single image. With WSJ its multiple pages of multiple series. Plus, there isn't any perceived value in manga outside certain series that have run out of print of which most are Japan-exclusive and/or really obscure. Your average manga collector just wants their favorite series readily available and digest them. Logan Paul is just a retard who wasted his money for nothing.
>>287653726You're not reading manga if you don't pay for it.
>>287653779>you will own nothing and you will be happy :DMeanwhile these scalpers are flipping these assets to make even more money. Back to your cage, poorfag.
>>287653629>
>>287653830Graded Pokémon cards made no sense either, since it prevents you from using them in the fucking game they were made to be used on, yet here we are.

>>287653854Is this the newest paypig cope? The only reason I'm in this hobby is because it's free or extremely cheap, that being a few series I'm caught up raw and no raw site updates for some reason, or they take a long time to do so, and that's just a handful of yen a year. The moment anything changes I'm fucking off to Libgen or some other timewaster.
