Please tell us about the beginning of Ao no Hako, which started airing as an anime in October 2024.>Murakoshi: I became the editor for the author, Miura-sensei, after she won an award in the "Garyokin Pro" contest. At the time, she had experience serializing in other magazines but was feeling a bit stuck, so she entered the contest wanting to challenge herself purely on her art skills.>As we met and discussed things, she showed me unpublished drafts and sketches. I realized she had not just artistic talent, but a solid foundation for storytelling. Great pacing building up to key scenes, and subtle direction showing character emotions. I told her those were her strengths and where her true potential lay.>She started to really shine after that. We did a one-shot in a supplementary issue which did well, and the next one-shot we did in the main magazine became the prototype for Ao no Hako.
Q: How did you settle on the concept of "a love story set in a sports powerhouse school"?>Murakoshi: It started with her asking, "Do you think an older heroine works?" I said, "Absolutely." We also discussed, "Do we need fanservice?" and decided, "No, we don't," (laughs).>Initially, we thought of having the main character in a sports club and the heroine supporting him, but sensei wanted to depict "two people working hard together, rather than one supporting the other." So we made both of them club members.>The idea of them living together came about because they are in different grades and different clubs. We needed a way to increase their interactions naturally to move the story forward. Sensei agreed it worked well, so it was decided smoothly.
Q: What was the process behind launching Akane-banashi by the duo Yūki Suenaga and Takamasa Moue?>Murakoshi: I started working with the writer, Suenaga-sensei, after he won the Sutokin Pro award. Meanwhile, the artist, Moue-sensei, is someone I’ve known for over 10 years since I met him through a submission when I was a new editor.>I paired them up because Suenaga-sensei showed me a draft about comedy, and I thought Magami-sensei’s art is great at expressive faces and it would fit perfectly. That one-shot was published and well-received, so we decided to try making it a series.>However, we realized doing straight comedy weekly was incredibly difficult to maintain quality. Then Suenaga-sensei suggested, "What about Rakugo (traditional storytelling)?" Classical Rakugo has endless stories with guaranteed appeal.>The biggest deciding factor was that the draft for Chapter 1 was just fantastic, and it matched Moue-sensei’s visual style perfectly. That’s how it got approved for serialization.
Q: How did you develop these skills to act as a hub?>Murakoshi: My very first assignment after joining Jump was working on Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan with Hiroshi Shiibashi. I knew absolutely nothing about editing manga, so I learned everything from scratch even how to hold a proper meeting. I am incredibly grateful to Shiibashi-sensei for that foundation.>In the summer of my second year, I took over as editor for Yusei Matsui, and I worked with him from the very first chapter to the final chapter of Assassination Classroom.>While a senior editor was the one who handled getting the series approved. I was in charge from the moment serialization began. That experience was huge because I got to handle everything, not just editing the manga, but also editing related books and managing media mixes like the live-action and anime adaptations.
Q: What kind of work do new employees assigned to "Weekly Shonen Jump" experience at first?>At first, new employees take on very basic tasks, such as being in charge of articles other than manga editing, like previews of the next issue and gift pages. These pages provide an opportunity for newcomers to learn the basics of magazine production. Since they don't directly interact with works or authors, they can afford to make mistakes. It's actually a valuable place within the pages of "Jump" where they can think about what constitutes better layouts and catchphrases, and repeat trial and error while considering the readers' perspective. Although this work may be different from the image of manga editing, it's difficult to successfully take charge of manga and face authors without the experience of creating articles and filling pages yourself. In addition, through experiences such as communicating intentions to photographers when requesting photos, exchanging information with people from other media, and working with those outside the editorial department, they can grow as professionals.
Q: What is the specific process for taking over assigned works?>In Weekly Shonen Jump, there’s a hard rule that an editor can only be responsible for up to two serialized works at a time. So when an editor already in charge of two works launches a new one, they automatically need to hand over one work to another editorial staff member.>Recently, I was in charge of developing Shun Numa's "Choujun! Choujou Senpai" up to its launch, and then passed it on to a new employee.>For the first volume of the comic, I had them sit in on meetings with the author to observe how things are done. After that, for several chapters, the successor took the lead in communicating with the author while I provided supplementary input from the side. Eventually, I stepped back from the meetings, and the handover was complete. Of course, I'm available to offer advice if asked and provide support in stages, but basically, even new employees are expected to take full responsibility for their assigned works. Instead of senior staff hoarding works and authors, passing on talented creators to younger generations and having them apply the experience gained to new authors creates a cycle within the editorial department.
Q: What do you find most appealing about working at Weekly Shōnen Jump?>Murakoshi: From the survey system to everything else, the rules are very clear and equal. I’ve had frustrating and difficult times, but I can honestly say I’ve never felt stress from the organizational structure.>If your manga doesn't do well, it's your responsibility. But when it comes to finding new authors, everyone has equal opportunity. Whoever answers the phone for a submission appointment gets priority as the editor. You can approach artists however you want, visiting art schools, organizing your own submission events, etc. Young editors can discover huge talent if they are proactive. The only thing assigned from above is taking over series when someone transfers departments.
Q: Weekly magazines have an image of being very tough work...>Murakoshi: People often say, "You must be busy, you must not sleep!" But I don't feel that way at all, and I get plenty of sleep (laughs).>Editing is like running your own business; there aren't strict rules about when and where you have to be. If you work efficiently, you get time back. And half the meetings are actually fun.>Every week you meet so many different people, not just editors and authors, but anime producers, directors, voice actors, designers, printers, and experts for research. Not many jobs let you meet such a wide variety of people. You can get involved in massive hits right from the start. It really is a place full of opportunities to grow.
