i think the anime is worse for cutting back on characters' expressions. it removed the confused look gaara had most the time early on and replaced it with an emotionless stare. it's similar with sasuke in making him less expressive. the anime had a weird thing with making stoic yet expressive characters feel emotionless.

I don't think Kisame or Konan had to be killed off, I feel like Kishi planned on them showing up as edo-zombies as well and wanted Tobi to be able to complete the Akatsuki gacha lineup. Thankfully cooler heads prevailed because both characters had pretty strong deaths.
