>>290233704I keep watching and I love the show but yeah I don't understand half of it. They often talk about this politician in that place and I'm like "has it ever been mentioned in a previous episode that I missed?". Still, I don't really care about the details, what interests me is the ideas and the themes. Love Motoko's personality in this one. It's different from the popular movie but I think it's better to see the goofier parts of her. It's a breath of fresh air.
>>290233704No one watched the new episode?

>>290237020Unironically a solid possibility. Shirow mentions the Cthulhu mythos in the appendix of Orion (canon within the GitS universe) like it's a historical source.More seriously though, The Call of Cthulhu is a subversion of theosophist beliefs so it makes total sense that a story like GitS which introduces new agey religious beliefs would be reminiscent of the Mythos

Anyone else thinks this has an AI uncanny quality to it? That would be fitting for this series, but I can't help but get the gut feeling AI was used here.
SHE'S FUCKING DEAD
>>290234504Right.I love everything that Science Saru churns out, and this is no exception. But 10 minutes into the first ep and I already almost ragequit. Reminded me why I never got into the movies and the earlier anime. Rewatching helped, a bit. But every new episode comes with its own oversized infodump and I feel that we'd be better off with no explanation at all than with this incomprehensible mix of technobabble, needlessly complicated political intrigue and quasi-deep philosophy.Have some Motoko slop.
>>290237444I think AI just broke your brain. I felt that the distortion from the rain made the apartment at the first half look AI but it was just distortion. I didn't see anything particularly AI anywhere else, other than the fact that there were beautiful scenery.

The great thing about not being a cyborg is that you can bully Project 2501 and she can't do anything to defend herself.
That was awesome.Quality maybe tied with last week's episode, that was effectively movie quality visuals for the whole montage. Also Motoko saying 'shit' in english was funny. So is Section 9 actually qualified to take in 2501's request for Asylum? I assume Aramaki is manoeuvring around Section 6 out of the suspicion whatever they want 2501 for is nothing good, but being able to use the pretext of 'We as public servants are just processing a claim for asylum :^)' would be a good cover to do this as well.
>>290242376>Also Motoko saying 'shit' in english was funny.Anyone who watches english dub, did she say that in japanese in there for comparison?
>>290242376well section 9 are the only guys with enough independence and firepower to stand up to section 6 in case things go south, so they're a pretty good bet if you're an AI on the run.>I assume Aramaki is manoeuvring around Section 6 out of the suspicion whatever they want 2501 for is nothing goodHe knows for a fact it's nothing good.Remember it's because of 2501 that the peace talks with the new government of the Gavel republic went to shit. The new government, for which Aramaki was providing strategic aid.So basically section 6 ALREADY used 2501 to interfere with Aramaki. More generally, she was built by an American company, it appears that section 6 is merely leasing her as part of an agreement with Burgerland, and Aramaki is more partial towards the Russians than towards the Americans. So on a geopolitical level, he can't allow section 6 to remain in control of 2501.And you know, there's also the fact that she's a walking (when she has legs) talking MK Ultra machine who fucks up people's brains on the reg and used some of your own men as pawns in a stupid cat-and-mouse game that could have got them killed. All because the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wanted to have their cake and eat it too.
>filters normalfagsThat's a pretty self-defeat-admitting statement considering that this anime only exists to sell the series to normalfags. They censored all the violence and sex and they genzified the subtitles and they removed all the good things the anime movie and series did, in favor of staying true to the inferior product (the manga).

>>290243609skill issue!>>290243552That's Oshii being cheeky is all. You see they're projecting their own intended meaning onto the quotes, like you project your likeness onto a mirror. Noooo come back hot ass Kusanagi in a tanktop.
>>290244439oh good, some actual thought.>From the start the stakes were pretty much nonexistent, Section 6 is supposed to be on par with Section 9 but they get dealt with almost effortlessly, making Motoko's virtual "apotheosis" feel unearned as she is just getting it handed to her without incurring a sacrifice from her part.Yeah well, here's the thing.Motoko hasn't reached "apotheosis" in the show yet. That will happen later. What you just saw was the Puppetmaster reaching apotheosis thanks to Motoko, which didn't happen in the movie at all and completely reframes their subsequent exchange.Another thing for you to keep in mind is that in the movie, Motoko doesn't provably reach "apotheosis" and it doesn't happen with her consent, so you can't really call it a reward either.I mean I guess she's "earned it" in a sense, but probably not in a good one.>in contrast Oshii streamlines this sceneI don't think that's what Oshii intended to do. I think he wanted it to feel incomplete.

>>290247960A very strong Robocop influence in that the live action version of the Major is a murder victim that intentionally had her memories stolen by the people that rebuilt her. She has a whole awkward scene where she tries to reunite with her mom and chickens out. They even address the whitewashing shit in-universe - she was definitely a young Japanese girl, but her brain got scooped out and put in a ScarJo shaped robot.Oddly enough Section 9 was not in on the experiment at all, I guess she just got dumped with them and they're as loyal to her as any other depiction.
just finished watching SAC season 1, I think it had a pretty good balance of section 9 doing their military intelligence action and also delving into some deeper topics. but it never got TOO deep where it started to go up its own ass.As much as I'm liking the style of the new show and seeing the characters have some fun. so far I prefer the balance of SAC overall. that version of Motoko is pretty far from gremlintoko, but she's not completely without lighter moments, even if it's just the occasional snarky comment. It was mostly Batou occasionally saying/doing something funny. which I'm glad he kept even in the more serious show.

Also mundane visuals are the subject of some of the most famous scenes from the film (e.g. wandering the city, Kusanagi waking up). It is probably fair to say that the least interesting style of scene (two characters talking in a room) is shot in a more dynamic way in p2. The film would be unwatchable if they got such scenes wrong. However as I said before they are a small portion of gits, and are still completely acceptable visually. Remember I am comparing the 1995 film to the 2026 anime, not to every other excellent movie. That pic also isn't a good example as gits uses the same reflection imagery effectively in a "barren" expository scene, when interrogating the trash guy.

>>290253535>Do we ever learn what specifically happens to the original Motoko/Puppet Master fusionshe shows up at the end of MMI where it's revealed she's keeping tabs on her copies. In Human Algorithm she's dropping clues every now and then for S9 to do her bidding, which mostly means helping the Channeling Agency unfuck the karmic balance of the universe It seems like eventually she starts dabbling in creating bioroids and that Gaia in Appleseed is made with her participation, but I'm just saying what I saw on Japanese websites summarizing some artbooks.By the way that's another reason I'm calling 2501 "she" here: her character design is based on Gaia/Erda.>>290253669>it feels shackled to having to chain together scenes that were never meant to be related.well yeah cause it's an Oshii project, he's trying to express something different here>Did the major find proof of godthat's also something the film deals with, but in a much more critical way
>>290253530Well it was probably her idea to deck out one of her proxies with a needler gun and a hypno voice so he could fuck shit up.And she never expresses regret for it. Again, she's built to maximize outcomes on the macro level

>>290253669The movie is simpler but it feels grander because its really well made in every sense. The anime now, even though its so much longer somehow fails to engage and i can't explain why.
>>290251056Top will be remembered for more decades Bottom will be forgotten in one year
>>290253994It's very simple: the movie spams vertigo shots at you, so obviously it feels grand, it's trying to make you feel dizzy every 3 seconds. The question is why? Cause it's an easy thing to do, really, what matter is what you're trying to achieve with it.
>>290233704They shat on the movies technobabbles but didn't realize those are based on the original. Poor faggots really think it's about virtual lesbian sex.
>>290254023Its not "vertigo" shots, its aping the style of blade runner with the long, detailed shots, contemplative tone, and music, so it gives the exact same vibe
I'm 4 episodes in and I honestly can't get into this shit. I am almost positive it is possible to do a faithful adaptation of the manga and not have it be this poorly paced and thought out. SAC really understood the absolutely retarded amount of information that has to be conveyed to the viewer with GiTS. There's the technology, the geopolitics, the civilian culture, the characters and their back stories and relationships, the philosophical musings, the actual main plot and villain, etc.SAC could recognize that it was best to just pick one of those things and dedicate an episode to it then rotate around. If they're doing an episode set in a robot factory the whole episode would be about exploring how cyborgs work in GiTS, who's allowed to make them, how they're policed, how often advancements are made, etc. If they're doing an episode on a terrorist group the whole episode is about them and their motives and politics and how Japan fits into it, what the rest of the world thinks of them, etc. With this show each episode is just all of this shit thrown together at the same time so it's not only difficult to follow (and this is as someone who knows the fucking universe already which is insane) but it's also absurdly shallow.Oh there's a terrorist group? What are their motives? Oh they're greedy and want to make money? Alright. Oh there's a robot factory owner? What's his deal? Oh he's also just greedy and evil and wants to kill people for no reason? Okay.I swear SAC had these same beats but they had like 100x the depth to them. Because each episode had a focus and could go deep into it. There's no focus with this show and so everything is kept as shallow as possible because there's no time to go into anything. At least the action is good.
>>290254078Oshii himself said he tried to make the characters look like they're constantly rising and falling, there's a shitload of huge perspective shots. You might not have noticed it, but your brain did.The Blade Runner connexion is a lot more tenuous than you might think and one of the main reasons there's one at all is because both Scott and Oshii like Fritz Lang. It's really not so simple as "oh both movies are cyberpunk noir with fake memories so I'll just copy the one that came before">>290253721thanks, it'll be a few months down the line and I'll be recycling some of my posts to make it easier for myself. Gonna be some kinda rob ager type of thing, I think.>>290253994In the anime you're seeing the Thing Itself, quite plainly. Here's a ghost, here's an angel, here's the underlying structure of the universe, here's how you access it. It's a lot to take in but it's ultimately comprehensible on a purely intellectual level. In the movie you only ever engage with symbols and aesthetics, you're always right at the threshold of witnessing the Thing Itself (assuming that there is a thing to witness) so obviously it feels exciting, because you're being cockteased with a grand revelation from the perspective of someone who can't access the Thing Itself just yet. But that doesn't automatically make it a good thing.

>>290254211you're responding to a shitposter, anon, he's strawmanning the fuck out of the show. The show explains quite clearly that Hanka needs to compete with other manufacturers but they can't do it with software. This is part of the wider theme of competition for survival and obsolescence which you're meant to pick up on as oppposed to having it be spoonfed to you. But if the guy you're responding to acknowledged that this is the case, his ruse would crumble.
I need answers about what happened last episodeCan the Puppet Master's Ghost exist in a metaphysical space without any hardware running its functions? Is the show implying it's the same for humans?
>>290254211the one i literally just watched, number 4. it's been ages but i swear in the SAC version of this episode everyone comments on the fact that the factory owner is occupying a jameson model body. because it's extremely odd in-universe. he doesn't just have insane wealth he literally owns a robotics company. he could have the most advanced and customized cyborg body ever. but he's in a tin can instead. it ends up being relevant to the plot and the larger story with the laughing man im pretty sure. or it's at least used as a means to explain how unequal the distribution of cyborg bodies are in universe. that some people are forced to maintain old ones due to funds, that support and parts can dry up, that there's some people obsessed with maintaining old ones, there's people with old sexbot models they get attached to etc. meanwhile in the 2026 show no one really comments on the factory owner being in a jameson model because the guy is introduced and then apprehended like 5 minutes later. him being in a jameson model body is basically just a gag so he can fall into the harbour and motoko can make a funny face.there's also ANOTHER guy who also owns a robotics company in the same episode and again we learn like nothing about him. just that he's corrupt and gets arrested at the end. there's really no time to learn about either factory owner or their personality or motives or whatever. and there's absolutely no time to use that as a tool to explore or explain larger parts of the universe and its lore. they're both just bad guys who are bad and that's all they're used for, an excuse for batou and togusa to have a shoot out with a yakuza guy. and again the yakuza are introduced but do we learn anything about them or their role in the world? in the future are they more powerful? less powerful? basically the same? who knows, because in this show they're just default bad guy NPCs.
>>290254299>Can the Puppet Master's Ghost exist in a metaphysical space without any hardware running its functions?Sure seems that way yep.>Is the show implying it's the same for humans?Potentially, but keep in mind that Motoko still needs a cyberbrain even post-fusion, so if your ghost kept existing without a body, that would just mean you're dead.
>>290254376>meanwhile in the 2026 show no one really comments on the factory owner being in a jameson model because the guy is introduced and then apprehended like 5 minutes later. him being in a jameson model body is basically just a gag so he can fall into the harbour and motoko can make a funny face.it's also an opportunity to blur the lines between robots and humans and he uses it as an excuse to claim his body was just malfunctionning>here's also ANOTHER guy who also owns a robotics company in the same episode and again no there isn't, Tonoda doesn't own a robotics companypay attention>and again the yakuza are introduced but do we learn anything about them or their role in the world?they provide drugs and kids to Hankapay attention
>>290248469It's green.
>>290253884Honestly, I never pegged that it was actually Motoko at the end of MMI we were seeing, just another duplicate/child/offshoot/whatever that was keeping tabs on the other copies, and that the Kusanagi/Puppet Master Fusion was content to just do their own thing.
>>29025112695 is the real GitS you fucking pleb
>>290254456yeah it's a fair mistake to make, not a very limpid plot.
>>290254434>pay attentionthat was the entire point of my first post. that my main complaint is the show is weirdly difficult to follow because it jumps around so much and none of the stuff it's supposed to be explaining to the viewer gets much time to gestate. this also then has the side effect of everything being totally surface level and lacking in any real depth. that same episode had a whole side plot with motoko getting one of her gfs bodies replaced. in SAC that would have been an entire major-centric character study episode. in this they basically speed run through it and by the end you haven't really learnt anything about the major or her gf or their relationship. they also try to shoehorn in some philosophical discussion in the most philistine way possible: which is literally 2 people sitting at a table discussing philosophy lol. as if there wasn't any better way to explore the points they wanted to make about changing bodies, no longer feeling like yourself etc.
>>290254376Okay here's the thing you might not have picked up on: What the show is meant to showcase is CONNEXIONS between people and organizations and the resulting consequencesThe Yakuza are connected to Hanka who are connected to Tonoda who is connected to Aramaki who is connected to Public Security and is doing this whole thing as part of an attempt to pass as a legit law enforcement unitmeaning crime is connected to business is connected to the Army is connected to the intelligence community is connected to Section 9 is connected to the police. And the irony here is that, in an attempt to strengthen his ties to Public Security, Aramaki ends up burning bridges with the Army/Intelligence because he has to arrest Tonoda.
>>290254541>this also then has the side effect of everything being totally surface level and lacking in any real depth. see>>290254551You're seeking depth within individual characters when you're meant to find it in their relationships, this is why the tagline of the show is "connected ghosts"
>>290253490Motoko's a man's woman. A real "one of the boys" except when she's horny.
>>290254541>which is literally 2 people sitting at a table discussing philosophy lol. as if there wasn't any better way to explore the points they wanted to make about changing bodies, no longer feeling like yourself etc. That's because Shirow isn't trying to wrestle with existential themes, he's trying to1- introduce the concept of sentient robots2- show that Motoko doesn't take existential questions seriously3- introduce the theme of obsolescenceWhich is important because if you start anguishing about this shit, you can't function properly, and Motoko is a survivor. You'll notice that the angle with which she tackles her thought experiment is NOT "what if you aren't urself?", it's actually "what if you're a defective unit and people come to scrap you?" because her mindset is focused on being the best at her job, in order to survive. It also foreshadows 2501 who is a defective sentient robot and section 6 come to scrap her. That scene was also an opportunity to mention out-of-body experiences which is exactly what happened in the latest episode.
>>290242644And Section 6 just want to keep her around to increase the shareholder value of the American companies they were working with? At least that's how I interpreted 2501 explaining it's purpose was to raise these companies 'points'.She's a stockprice tracker that gained sentience from sifting through massive amounts of information regularly? >>290251643>>290251669Assyrian specifically, they're some of my favorite bas-reliefs in the British Museum. Worth a visit if you're ever in London. They're just off of the egyptian area in the ground floor, the egyptian area sucks up all the tourists so the Assyrian area is more quiet so it's nice to enjoy it. https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/W_1907-0710-1
>>290254660>And Section 6 just want to keep her around to increase the shareholder value of the American companies they were working with? At least that's how I interpreted 2501 explaining it's purpose was to raise these companies 'points'.The company in question was the Gavel platinum mines mentioned in episode 2/3, meaning we're probably dealing with some high-level cold war shit about the US trying to keep control of natural resources in third-world countries by acting through proxy companies. This is why Foreign Affairs helped Aramaki bust the guys from the opening of the show, I believe: they were colluding with russians instead of americans.Anyway, the line about "points" I believe (not sure but it would be in character) might be a reference to Conway's Game of Life, it's a rough simulation of cellular activity, so 2501 is approaching geopolitics and economics as if she was looking at lifeforms, if my interpretation is correct, and she was ordered to make sure that the platinum companies survive instead of getting assimilated by the new Gavel government.
>>290254571All I'm saying is SAC handled this exact same dilemma in a much more elegant manner, which was through focus. Like I said I'm only 4 episodes in; but the pattern with 2026 that I've seen thus far is that for some reason they feel every episode has to have everything that makes up what GiTS is (literally feels like a show runner note from above): There has to be cyborgs, there has to be terrorists, there has to be corporate espionage, there has to be tachikomas, there has to be a chase scene, there has to be a shoot out etc. When you're forced to include every element of what makes up GiTS into every episode you end up with something incredibly flat, somewhat difficult to follow, and most importantly devoid of any real depth. SAC meanwhile would pick one element and adequately explore it with an episode. The universe slowly unfolded over the course of the show. Which seems like the proper way to handle something as dense as GiTS. Not blast all of it at once every episode so there's never any time to go into any individual part with any real depth.
>>290254724Anon, I just showed you that there was in fact depth where you thought there was none. It's sounding like you just have an idiosyncratic definition of depth
>>290251169it was boring af
>>290254723Oooooh.Everythings connected. Neat. Just the glowies involved didn't consider one of their tools might gain a soul and see the face of God, totally outside context thing for them.
>>290254799Exactly.I don't remember if the show explicitly mentions the date, but in the manga, 2501 was told to prioritize the platinum mines only a few DAYS after the corrupt guys from episode 1 were busted. This implies that Aramaki's involvement in international bullshit is what gave Section 6 the idea to pull the same shit in Gavel, this time using Aramaki as a pawn.
>>290254774What this post? >>290254631My point still stands in SAC that would have been an entire Motoko centric episode. In 2026 it's a sideplot that's quickly rushed through. also i can't help but feel most of the depth you've ascertained from it had to have come at least partially from a manga reading. speaking as someone who hasnt read the manga and has only seen SAC S1/S2 and the two theatrical films... almost none of what you mentioned was self evident in the actual episode.
It was beautiful and emotional.
>>290254892this post and also that post>>290254551Of course I'm bringing manga knowledge into this, but I don't need to. Everything I mentioned has been demonstrated across episodes that already came out.>My point still stands in SAC that would have been an entire Motoko centric episodeyeah which is very ironic because Motoko's name literally means "component", her narrative purpose is to tie things together.>in the actual episodethere you go again expecting each theme to be explored in full within one single episode.

>>290250404I had that idea too but I guess in a world where everyone with enough money could enhance their body you never can be sure if the supermodel you see just won the genetic lottery, helped a little with augmentation, sent ghost to a new body or is artificial as fuck. It would be highly inappropriate to go around and call people robots. But the lab worker is most likely a turbo nerd so we can neirher rely on their manners nor their ability to differentiate between levels of female attractiveness.I rather think because Motoko's body is state owned and made for battle and therefore needs limbs replaced etc they didn't give her the highest end model but a compromise of giving a human 2nd ranked in a special forces section something kinda worth living in that will also not bancrupt Japan when she fistfights a tank. I think they made her hot enough but something about hair yells cheaply manufactured or old parts. And because the robot on the run must be made with parts for battle androids that were just in stock when puppetmaster wanted to run fast you would argue puppetmaster had to make similar compromise

>>290254376The guy in a jameson type body is meant to just be hentai, I think. He's a prevert. He probably could get a normal body but he sticks to that one intentionally. The manga seems to express his thought process better? He loses one part of his original body at a time and replaces it to keep doing things like sky diving or mountain climbing. But then he loses his whole body. At which point he seem to crack and declare machine superiority. Since he can now do things a human body cannot.
>>290256071>Except this is never fleshed out in previous episodes what the fuck are you talking about, dude? She's introduced trying to find a new gig for her and her squad, and scolding a kid for not getting his shit together in this unforgiving world. It's established from the get-go that survival is one of her top priorities and she doesn't care about sentimental shit
>>290256104No that's a different guy I'm pretty sure, you're talking about the guy from Pandora
Why did motoko become whore? He fucked a guyDisgusting. Dropped
>>290256142Ah well, I think he's still supposed to be a prevert. There's not much more to it.
>>290255397SAC actually tackles this issue briefly. To make a truly unique appearance, you basically need a face artist to make you a unique and uniquely flawed face.I have a sub theory though that Motoko looks like Motoko, but her appearence was then used for general purposes. She lost her body young and has pretty much always been full cyborg. One of the first. The issue may be the other way around as such.
In the end, Mercerism from DADOES was made real by the inclusion of the basset hound.
>>290256342Motoko knows one such face artist in the mangaso it's not a bad theory you've got
>>290256418Well, I'm basing it a lot on SAC going in to why Motoko is a full combat cyborg owned by the gubbment. She only has a body as an experiment if such a thing is possible. Literally the first full cyborg, and funded fully as such. Otherwise she'd be dead. But that also means a lot of her identity would be owned by.. not her. Technically. Which is why she's fine with it but also kind of harshes on her sense of identity?
>>290256457More importantly it harshes on her sense of autonomy, in a very practical sense it's not good that you have to rely on a specific organization to not die.
>>290256490Yeah. It's not that she sold her self to the government. She's never been free. It's happenstance. Also, it plays in to questions of original versus copy well. Motoko is Motoko. If the general model only looks like that because of her.. it's still playing with the idea is the copy still a copy if only God can tell the difference? And yeah, how would she know she was ever human? She's been in a tin can so long.
>>290254631>Which is important because if you start anguishing about this shitIn Oshii's version they are talking about this as if it is all a novel concept to them. In Shirow's GitS, full prostatic is a mundane reality and the only thing special about he Major is that she is military grade. Like all the questions have probably in asked and debated upon a thousand times, you could probably by books or go to specific therapists who deal with cybernetic anxieties. It makes sense that the Major isn't all overly profound about it, it would be "what is the meaning of life?" tier question to them.
>>290255023WRONG! A GREAT adaptation changes the original material to fit a new art form. Copying a story word for word or scene for scene nore often than not fails because different mediums work in DIFFERENT WAYS!! The Shining? Stephen King is the epitome of human mediocrity but Stanley Kubrick elevated what was a mediocre novel into one of the greatest horror movies ever made. The Lord of the Rings? Peter Jackson took a dense epic fantasy and turned it into a concise trilogy. Those three movies are now considered one of the greatest film trilogies EVER.Shrek? More than half of the population probably doesn't even know that Shrek started off as an obscure children's book. And that movie is one of the greatest animated movies ever made PERIOD.Jurassic Park? The dialogue was robotic, and consisted of too many expository info dumps. Then came Steven Spielberg and he did his magic, and now that movie is considered one of the greatest movies ever made and birthed a multi billion dollar franchise, just like Oshii did with that mediocre technobabble manga by Shirow.Shirow owes his entire career to Oshii and thanks to him, he can retire and do what he likes doing most (like making blacked porn).
