I had a comfy Saturday morning walking my collie and my neighbour's geriatric Shepherd. The Shepherd is 12 years old and has been spoiled most of his life by two women so he barks whenever he wants something which is usually attention and gets it. He also doesn't get enough exercise.
Not with me, brosky. I make that fucker run and swim until he passes out for 12 hours. However, in his defence, he did attack and scare off a boar that went after my collie.

I'm partially sexist and I've encountered a lot of behavioural issues in dogs over the years from women treating their dogs as children/ living teddy bears and not as canines. In the case of the Shephard above he wouldn't have a barking issue if he wasn't constantly rewarded and fawned over like a crying baby the second the house shakes from his booming bark.
>>
>>4840780
Without getting into all the nuances of dog training and conflicting opinions a dog should be treated and raised according to its psychology and the domesticated wolf that it is. The dog should have its needs met but also conform to living in human society without becoming a menace. A dog should not be treated like a needy human child and given the run of the house. It also shouldn't exist purely as a lapdog that gets stuffed with treats, especially as a working breed.
>>
>>4840772
>>4840782
Your generalizations about women and dog owners are unfounded and based on delusions. Instead of fretting over trivial issues like barking for attention, focus on more pressing matters like walking your dogs off-leash in dangerous areas where they could be injured by wildlife.

Live in a small apartment and want a small dog but not one of them fluffy white fellas cause my last dog was one and I want something different, do chihuahuas have any major health issues endemic to the breed as a whole and not just tied to apple heads?
>>
>>4841276
Get a deerhead chihuahua mix, that's how you get a peak little dog.
>>
>>4841276
Chihuahuas have severely diminished brain function as a whole which can cause decreased cognitive function and increased reactivity.
>>
It's really troubling to see how some people on the internet mistreat their Chihuahuas just for the sake of getting attention. I recently came across a video where two kids were deliberately provoking their Chihuahua to get a negative reaction because they thought it was funny.

Okay my doggie is here!

Day one I drove him home from in a crate (he's crate trained). He whined a bit in the car ride home but did okay. We went outside pretty often yesterday because I wanted to make sure he could go to the bathroom and was successful / didn't have an accident. He's not a huge fan out being outside yet. He's a bit freaked out by it, maybe I over stimulated him :/

He's very hyper current and won't leave my side, I think more out of being nervous. How is best to bond with him? Should be fussing over him all day or give him time to just chill? I've giving him lots of pets and trying to be a good buddy, but also doing a little work. How do I help the dog adjust?

Side note, do you plan on keeping his face trimmed? Or will you fall to the dark side (teddy bear cut).
>>
>>4841761
Okay I just found a little accident by his crate lol spoke too soon. Cleaned it up.

So treats is the secret? Also how much should I fuss over him? Like should I let him wonder off a bit so he does not have more accidents or watch him like a hawk?

I plan on keeping him shaven. The teddy bear cuts it seems like they can not see well and also it is messy. I will keep his body close but his head like a typical poodle.

Sorry for Reddit spacing on my phone with dog on lap
>>
>>4841771
I recommend keeping him on a long house line or in a sectioned-off area of the house, so that you can keep a close eye on him.

Also, when you socialize him with the trimmers, make sure to go slow and reward him often, especially in the beginning. Electric trimmers and other grooming tools will be an integral part of grooming him.
>>
>>4841779
He is a retired show dog so he okay with grooming. I am going to use a professional groomer to start though, but may try to learn a bit on my own as time goes on.

Maybe a dumb question but when I shower should I crate him?
>>
Just adopted a 7 month old rescued dog. Love her so much. I have a date already to get her sterilized but lately i've been wondering if I should go through with it. She's so young and is just developing. Should I do it? Should I wait more? Will it harm her growth?
>>
>>4841852
It is best to wait until a year and a half at least, this will reduce the chances of joint issues when she is older. Unless you have a reason otherwise.
>>
>>4841812

Removing the hormone producing reproductive bits before 2 years of age has the most dramatic negative health impacts. Removing them at all is bad unless they are disordered.

The only ethical option is delaying a spay as long as possible. At the first sign of abnormal heats, spay. A medically unnecessary surgery is literally torture. Causing pain for no reason.

Everything else is a compromise but at the least you should wait until they are 2 years old.
>>
>>4841866
No he is 15 months old. Miniature poodle. He was just okay as a show dog so she retired him.
>>
>>4841889
That's called a flunk/failed show dog.
>>
>>4841892
Yep! I mean he made grand champion, I was able to look him up, but she does not want to breed him and has better show dogs. I just wanted a pet so it is kinda perfect, I do not care about dog shows. I just hope his personality is good.

So far he seems extremely friendly but very hyper. It is hard to tell with a dog that has been only home for 24 hours though. Also I am a brainlet so probably doing a lot wrong

I have to wrestle him into a collar while he was covered in his own shit and carry him back to the car because he didn’t know what to do on a leash because he had never been on one. I spent 4+ hours a day working with that dog for months until he could do basic commands and recall and I still wasn’t comfortable enough to take him in public.
I’m going to get a puppy so I can make sure it’s socialized and trained from the beginning.

Pls help.

My dog has a red spot on his paw that he's been licking. It started small but seems to be growing in a line slowly downwards. It does not seem to hurt him as you can touch it and apply pressure without him recoiling. It doesn't have an open wound or abscess, all I can see is a very small area with what looks like a scab or a bit of dried blood. He isn't limping and apart from the redness seems perfectly fine.

We took him to the vet today, they said it might be foxtail but we havent taken him for a walk in any tall grass recently and I didn't see any burrs elsewhere on him. I also would assume that would be a bit more painful than he seems to be letting on.

Complication: during the exam he got spooked and barked right in the face of one of the nurses, grazed her with his teeth but didn't bite. Still, they called animal control and put him on a 10 day at home quarantine, and said the vet couldn't do any more work on him until the 10 days are up. They gave us some antibiotics and told us to come back afterwards so they could sedate him and remove the suspected foxtail seed.

So two questions:

1. If it is a foxtail, how bad is leaving it in there for 10 more days while he is taking antibiotics?

2. What else could it be? I was thinking it looked more like a big bite which maybe got infected, in which case the antibiotics should hopefully be all he needs.
>>
>>4843296
I've heard Embark is good, although I haven't actually used them. But any reputable test kit should be enough to keep the breeders honest.

Day 10 of rescue dog adoption:

I can no longer live without her. She loves me with a purity i've never experienced before in my life. All she wants is to be near me. I would kill for my dog. I should have done this years ago.
>>
>>4843306
Very hard to tell what it could be.

If it's a foxtail you may be able to feel it under his skin. Usually foxtails will eventually get very swollen and puss filled, especially if it is entirely embedded in the skin.

If it gets worse I think you can get antibiotics from a fish store, but you need to be very precise with the dosage.

>>
>>4843313

>>
>>4843312
Ive felt around on it, can't feel anything at all and the pressure/touch doesn't hurt him. He's already on antibiotics so I'm hoping those help, at least for the next 10 days. If it's not better by then I'll take him back in, I just hope it doesn't keep getting worse in the mean time.

I took the back seats out of my minivan that i use for daily driving and i've been taking her on errands. I put a dog bed in it for her to rest on since there are no seats. When i take her out of the house for walks she goes straight for the van and i have to coax her into leaving. At first i thought she like the van because she got to see all these new things. But i noticed she just lays down now that it isn't novel and sleeps on the bed. When i bring her home she doesn't want to get out so i go and lie with her in the back for a few minutes.

What i've realized is that the van is like the kennel she loves so much, but its big enough for me to be in it too. She just wants to be close to me.

All of humanity’s advanced technology is worthless when it can’t even make a dog live for 100 years
>>
>>4843389
The short lives of dogs is part of their virtue. It is very human to think more=better
>>
>>4843355
You are already being a bitch by locking your dog out instead of training them properly, proud owner of a disproportionate bite and mauling risk.
>>
>>4843389
Our technology is for keeping geezers barely alive enough to sign legal documents and tracking you to determine which fast food ads you should see, not anything actually good.

Look on the bright side, at least we're not starving to death in a gulag for having a dog.
>>
>>4843389
Dogs early mortality is genetically programmed, for some reason, via a hormonal mechanism. I guess to make them breed sooner. So it's somewhat fixable just not able to go to 100.
https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Living/anti-aging-medication-development-dogs-live-longer/story?id=105311713
https://www.cbsnews.com/sanfrancisco/news/fda-approves-medication-that-extends-the-lifespan-of-dogs/

So more like dragging large dogs back up to the lifespan of wolves. I strongly believe humans did this because dogs like mastiffs are disposable and need to be replaced rapdily, so they bred only the most fertile dogs and therefore the ones that matured the fastest, hence the concentration of truncated lifespans being the highest in mastiff derived dogs like berners, great danes, and scenthounds.

I'm on day 4 of my adopted/re-homed dog and it's my first dog. He has been quite fearful of other people and seems very anxious, he's sticking around me mostly. He's had some accidents too and seems afraid to pee in front of me (and doesn't lift his leg).

He's starting to bark a lot, but maybe that's just fear of his new surroundings?

How close should I watch him? I feel like if I keep my eye on him constantly he's going to get neurotic and more nervous. I guess the risk is he chews something or has an accident?

Yes. When he goes to the bathroom I make a huge party about it and give him treats.

>he sounds abused
Maybe. I think he was raised with a bunch of dogs and only knows life with them, and I also think he lived more of the kennel life than a home one if that makes sense. now he's got no dog friends, in a strange house, and while he's velcro to me he probably doesn't completely trust me. Kongs (stuff with wet food or soaked kibble, put some PB and/or greek yoghurt over the opening and freeze it), lickmats, snuffle boards, puzzle toys, pupsicles made by soaking and freezing kibble in moulds/trays.
Pretty limited on things they can do solo in a smaller space but these are what I do for my pup. I'm going to have to go back to work next week so he'll have a big gap in the morning until lunchtime and another big gap in the arvo.
Hopefully he'll be satisfied with these things and sleep to kill time. Also considering getting another pen and combining them so I can set it up next to the balcony door giving him space to go out and pee in a puppy potty.

let it soak in a jar of pickle juice for a month and it won't splinter too badly.

Ideally no bones but use bully sticks and collagen braid sticks instead. Or those nylon bones like nylabone/tasty bone/whatever.
If she's got all her adult teeth uncooked bones can be ok but you'll want to observe how she chews on it to make sure she's not choking herself or anything.

No trolling but do you find other people's dogs tiresome unless in small doses? Never owner who has been thinking on getting one. A relative got a dog recently and it's making me reconsider. Every time the relative visits with her dog it's like a vortex sucking all the attention. Whatever activity or conversation we're having gets hijacked every couple of minutes, either by the dog itself or by the relative who has to comment on everything the dog does. Is it like children where you're passionate about yours but other people's are nothing special?

You should take puppies out every hour and after every meal until it eventually clicks. Also, praise them when they defecate outdoors. Depending on the pup, it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Furthermore, their sphincters aren't fully developed so the occasional accident can happen
>>
>>4843957
>Is it like children where you're passionate about yours but other people's are nothing special?
Kind of but I also get annoyed when visiting someone and 90% of the conversation is about their recently acquired dog/cat. It's especially annoying when the conversation gets interrupted because they have to point out their pet doing something mundane. It's usually the type that treats their pets as child replacements

Can /dog/ help me get my next dog that would ideally just be a smaller, less energetic lab?
>Australia
Hot summers, temperate autumn/spring, cool winters but never subzero
>Mid-30s, WFH half the week, aiming for full-time WFH. Had aussie cattle dog, kelpies, labradors.
>In an apartment with two off-leash parks <5min walk away. Public waterways 10-15 mins away, a few off-leash beaches ~15 min drive.
What I love about labs/retrievers:
Good-natured, happy, fantastic temperament
Intelligent and easily trainable
Can bark but not yappy
Chill while I work/left alone for 3-5 hours
Easy-care coats

What I'm willing to do:
45-60 min twice daily walks
Monthly bath unless muddy

What I'm trying to avoid:
Dogs needing more than one person to lift into a car
Breeds at higher risk of IVDD (dachshunds, corgis)
Breeds needing daily brushing/monthly grooming (poodles, -oodles, huskies)
Breeds known for independence (beagles)
Breeds needing hours of exercise daily (cattle dogs)
Breeds prone to barking (Shelties, corgis)
Breeds with high medical risks (King Charles Cavalier, flat-nosed dogs)
Dogs that don’t like being cuddled (whippets, Italian greyhounds)
Breeds at risk of overheating in Aussie summers (Malamutes, huskies)

Looking for a medium dog. Good nature, can lift into a car, some health resistance, but not high energy/herding behavior. Any breed recommendations?
I was thinking maybe something like a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever? Or a spaniel of some kind?

We have a courtyard my current lab gets to play on when I have breaks that are too short for going to the parks. It's stone paved though so less interesting than a proper garden with plants.
The only thing he's done differently when we're staying at a house with a garden is sniff around more and chew on plants.

So my rescue dog's blood test came back and we need to support her liver function so we're giving her some supplements that the vet prescribed. Vet says it could be a combination of the erlichia shes recovering from and the prednisone she was prescribed by the rescue. Wants to test again in a month and see if she's improved.

Anybody know what kind of food i should have her on to maximally support her liver function?
>>
what's the best way to find pre-trained dogs? like ready to go already housebroken, crate trained, etc.
>>
>>4844725
go shop some breed specific shelters / rescue associations. they'll anal probe the shit out of you and the dog is likely to have a major drawback like bad with other dogs, huge prey drive, etc. but those are often where 'responsible' people who abandon well trained adult dogs because of major life changes will abandon them.

if you are interested in a specific breed you could also just start cold calling akc registered breeders en masse as many of them have a blanket policy of accepting their dogs back at any time for any reason so you may catch one of them in the middle of rehoming one of their customers' dogs, or they may know of a breeder who is.
>>
Took my dog on a hike today. She jumped in a stream and drank some water from it. I just read that it could be dangerous for dogs to drink for rivers/streams/creeks/etc. Is there any cause for concern? I didn’t see any algae.
>>
>>4844770
I've seen dogs drink green stagnant water and the worst that happened was some diarrhea.
>>
>>4844725
Just get an older puppy from your breeder or look up guide/therapy dog schools. Just so you know, training is an ongoing process so you're not bypassing the procedures by getting a “pre-trained” dog.

Only time will tell. Some people have puddles of Giardia in their yards so we will all deal with these sorts of things eventually. No need to fret over every cough though.

How did we go from using the word 'dog' as a synonym for something or someone worthless and base to worshipping dogs?
>>
>>4845071
>"we"
You already lost this argument in another thread. The very premise was btfo like, instantly, as absurd. Child is used as an insult with even harsher connotations. A "dog" insult means someone has no principles or morals and only does what they're paid to do.
>>
>>4845075
Nah, think of expressions like treating someone like a dog which assumes that dogs are commonly treated harshly and with contempt.
>>
>>4845078
Centuries of execution and long term imprisonment for violent crimes acted as a eugenics program that gradually removed most of that kind of dog owner from society, so most people lost that reference point.

I let my dog sleep in my room last week and now he refuses to sleep elsewhere

Whenever my husband and I take our dog our anywhere, she tries to run after him if he walks away to use the bathroom or get food, etc.

Yesterday we went to the park, my husband gave me the leash so he could get the car. My dog with all her might tried to run after him. She’s 50 pounds so she almost yanked my arm out of my socket. Is this separation anxiety, fear of being in an unfamiliar location, or just an eagerness to get back into the car to go home?

Is there a way to train this behavior?
My husband and I are trying for a kid, so my biggest fear is her sprinting like this on leash if I’m pregnant.

Go out with your dog have them be a little hungry and have your husband leave while you feed her high value treats like chicken breast. Make sure she's focusing on you.

My 2-year-old Boston terrier has been having some severe issues lately. He refuses to eat when no women are present, sometimes even if a woman is present but men are in the room. This includes by 13 year old son who is going through puberty. We think that he was abused by the farmers on the farm where we bought him, as he's been very skittish of adult men since day one. They were Amish, and we all know how they handle dogs, so we think he might be inbred and have some sort of mental issue as well. This wouldn't be too big of a problem by itself, as he usually eats when my wife gets home at night, but it's affecting our other dog as well, making him think that something is wrong and that he shouldn't eat either. We're floating the idea of rehoming him, we really don't want to do that but we don't want him to starve either. Any suggestions, or should we just really start looking into a new home for him?
>>
>>4845212
To further back up the point of him having an effect on our other dog, if we take the Boston terrier out of the room long enough for our beagle to eat, the beagle will eat. This has happened numerous times, so I don't think it's a fluke.

It's not bad or harmful for the dog, but if you are uncomfortable you can try to retrain him
For starters, I would suggest not letting him sleep in your room and setting up his sleeping space as far away as possible.
My dog sleeps in my room with me because it's the only place I could put his new cage, and it has helped him a lot with the anxiety
>>
>>4845196
Well luckily this will be easy to train, you just need to drive to places and have your husband walk away
Try doing it on the weekends or when you two aren't busy
Get some treats, get your dog to sit and have your husband walk away, reward when your dog keeps his attention on you
Alternatively you could consider getting a different kind of harness

Update on my research on liver function in dogs:

Low protein diets are actually what you want to do. Eggs, pea protein, berries, lentils, sweet potatoes, these are easy on the liver. they can have some fish and venison too, so i got my rescue a salmon formula with all of those ingredients. I think she's going to be fine. I think the liver function was efffected by her erlichia, prednisone, and the fact she got into some chocolate whey powder the first week.
