Would it be retarded for me to stack ancient roman silver/gold coins?

I am mild autism and have the need to have some theme in my stack. I want all my coins to be exactly the same, but I also want them to be somehow special. Whenever I look at a roman coin I just get a sense of joy imagining that some ancient person was holding this.

Ancient coins are not the best way to take advantage of gains from either the potential industrial demand for silver or the potential remonetization of gold. But ancient coins are very cool and interesting. And people do make gains from trading numismatics. But it requires far more time and knowledge than stacking for bullion value.

Today is a very bad day frens. A recent seller on ebay who is dumping all kind of super cool & rare silver coinage (a dead relative collection maybe?) put on sale over 300 coins all at once, with only a 3 days delay and ending early in the morning. Given the short time window, i thought it could be the opportunity of a lifetime to get myself some extraordinary stuff for cheap.

Worked my ass off day&night to figure out at which prices i could slurp to make some gains(and it's not an easy task when we talk about rare coinage, like mongolian golden horde dirhams, etc..).

Seems like others were as determined as i was, but with much deeper pockets, because i won pretty much nothing out of those 300, only 2-3 unidentified leftover scrap nobody even bothered to look at, since i got them for $1..
Feeling sad and angry with myself i spent so much time and energy for zero reward,..

Example of the peepoo i was left with. I don't even know what this is kek, beside that it weights 3.1g and is in billon.

In France we don't have any specific bullion coins (officially the Monnaie de Paris does it, but it's crap), but we do have the old 5frs “Semeuse”. Only 10g of silver, but with three of these you can easily get an ounce, and there's always a way to buy dozens or hundreds.

There's also the 50frs Hercule, not really an ounce, but still a nice coin to have in your stack.

And don't forget the écus from Union Latine, the 100frs Panthéon and the other versions of the Semeuse (50c, 1fr, 2frs...).

There's also the 10 and 20 francs “Turin” but they're only 680‰ silver, so nobody buys them and so they're cheap.
>>
>>59212691
If you want both the metallic value and numismatics I would recommend getting into 1800-1980 European and American silver coins.
>>
>>59214445
He is talking about the countries currently producing bullion. It's a shame France doesn't have any considering the Monnaie de Paris is the oldest mint in the world still in activity, and considering we were designing & minting coins for over half the world during the 19th c., far above even the british.
>>
>>59212691
Roman coinage is a very deep rabbit hole, even feeling endless at times because there are so many coins and variations spanning over half a millenia.
Good thing is you learn a lot of things, which is valuable in itself, and you can find countless ones on sale on popular platforms. You can find your pleasure from $1 (well.. at that price it wont be silver but copper) to $1M, which is also very nice, as you can dip your toe without taking much risks at first.
For silver denarii, you can start to find stuff around $20 in auctions, and very nice looking ones for double that amount.

I ordered one with a random date and expected something more modern since the older the Coin is the higher its numismatic value gets so getting such an old one seems a bit strange to me

At first I wanted it to be delivered to me but i was at work when the delivery guy got to my home so i had to pick it up from the store

regardless of the dimensions, you can also test gold by striking it gently with a gold coin you already know is real
gold on gold has a very distinctive high pitched sound

I really want the 1000 schilling Austrian Gold Coin
I already have a largae stack of Mostly austrian kronen restrikes because of the low premiums but i really want this one because it cost almost as much as i make in a month salary wise so it would be nice to have my entire monthly income represented by a single gold coin and watch as its value explodes over time
I just think it would be nice if in ten years or so this one coin would be enough to buy a decent house or so and remind myself that i paid for it with just one months salary

Gave my nephew a 1906 Rooster since he's two years younger, he's kept it without a desire to sell it.

They have a store almost everywhere in Germany so its really easy to get stuff from them

i fucking hate crypto, and not because of what it is but because of how much shit i need in order to buy it now.
in the past it was wallet address, and private key, like username and password. you send a guy money and your address, he sends you btc. simple.
now i need to sign up for a wallet, i need to buy a decentralized integrated blockchain platform exchange model token, which requires a payment processor that i also need to sign up for and which takes a fee, then i swap that token for the shitcoin i actually want. i can't imagine how hard it is to sell one......
if i want coin; i give man fiat, he give me silver coin. simple.

Maybe go for modern restrikes of European coins? The Austrian Corona coins are beautiful, hard gold coins that have a very low premium. Also the British gold sovereign will start being minted in yellow gold again.

This way your coins won't be destroyed by wear and tear but they'll still be very unique from other stacks.

so its just an glorifed letter opener?

Just out for fun and because i really want one i looked at how much an actual silver sword would cost
The avrg longsword weighs around 2 to 3 kg and is made out of stell which has a density of 10,49g/cm3 which means it has a volume of around 320cm3 if we go with 2,5 kg for our sword
Silver has a density of 10,47g/cm3 and 10,38/cm3 for sterling silver which means we would need 3.556 g Silver for an pure sword and 3.321 g of silver for an sterling one
With an current spot price of 97ct it would cost 3449 dollars to get a pure silver sword in material alone and 2980,3 Dollars for the Sterling silver since its 7,5% cheaper because of the lower purity
If we factor in production cost i would say another 500 to 1000 dollars are reasonble so it would be around 4000 to 4500 dollars for the pure one and 3500 to 4000 for the sterling one

I think the Idea of an real functioning Silver Sword is cool as hell and would instantly buy one but sadly no one makes one of those
>>
>>59219832
i just realised a typio steal has a density of 7,85 g/cm3 not 10,49 but that doesnt change anything about the calculations

so i actually went to a coin shop and had it tested
Turned out i was paranoid for no reason it's real but what kinda bummed me out is the price for which i could sell it
They offered 506 Euros when its worth about 570 with current spot price
Now I don't buy PM to invest i buy them as a hedge against inflation and in a few years when im in ny sixties and the pension fund has run out one of these is enough to pay for atleast a months rent and groceries so it doesn't really matter but it's still a bit disheartening to no get the full value out of it

I don't know how you got its worth at £570, though prices for collectors seeking a particular year are typically higher (you want it bad, you'll get it bad...).

It's showing how much the paper derivatives have suppress the price of silver and gold since the creation of the Federal Reserve. If the paper derivatives were removed, silver would be $1,000 per ounce and $7,302 per ounce.

However this isn't the whole story. Our mining techniques have gotten better since 1913 meaning the price should be lower, but I don't imagine it to being that much.

this is why NFTs will takeover and be more valuable than the item they correspond with in many cases. no more having to trust sources for accuracy in production numbers. each item will have a corresponding NFT and while you can counterfeit the actual item 1:1 you cannot counterfeit an NFT's address, making ownership of it more important than the actual item.

>So if im reading rhis right than for every 1000 dollars in circulation there is only one ounce of silver in the world?
Almost. It's what you said, but per year. So here it's for 2024 : this year for each oz of silver mined worldwide, the US gubment sharted $1000.

Derivatives never work that way IRL. They always end up over-leveraging the asset backing something up. It started that way with banks and receipts for gold that were "as good as gold." When 2 people show up with a receipt to claim the same gold, only 1 will get it.

I've already seen ideas pitched around to sell fractional NFTs collateralized by the item it represents. It's the same bullshit scam bankers have been running for hundreds of years, just with a new coat of paint.

>I've already seen ideas pitched around to sell fractional NFTs collateralized by the item it represents.
I remember back in 2020-2021 the entire internet was fucking SPAMMED with their latest jewish scam of owning "fractional art's NTFs", like you purchase 0.01% of a Van Gogh paint in custody by X or Y company.
Basically side-stepping the stock market to put a pricetag on everything in (((art galleries))) and sell it as shares.
As fake and bullshitty as stock market's shares.

No exaggeration it was 90% of the online ads i was fed with by the algos. Back then i was watching quite a lot of stock market related vids, i found it interesting it's what got shilled to me rather than companies.

You have to specify a size you're aiming for, otherwise it's stuff like scrap or 1000 oz bars.

Monument has tubes of mercs for $116 right now which is relatively cheaper than I've seen at most places recently: https://monumentmetals.com/tube-of-90-silver-mercury-dimes-5-face-value.html

Yeah I buy miner stocks because I'd like to have something to sell if spot goes way up instead of selling any of my stack. I got positions in Agnico Eagle, Fortuna, Barrick Gold, First Majestic, Freeport-McMoran, and Hecla. Fortuna and the gold miners have been destroying it this year, even despite the recent pullback, I'm still up like 40% on them since start of the year.

I like to pit my BTC against the mining stocks and watch them go back and forth, and whichever has bigger gains can scoop a little into my physical stack.

No, that’s a gold “round”. Harder to verify and less liquid than a sovereign gold coin like the American gold eagle or Canadian gold maple leaf. It’ll be worth the gold and no more.
>>
>>59228017
Thank you anon, I was a crypto autist the last decade but I'm becoming an old man (30) and I know nothing about gold, just wanted to pay homage to crypto even in a gold investment with a coin or two. After this next bull run I am taking 90% of my money out of this bullshit and reinvesting it smartly to secure something for the future. I'm going to go through the resources at the top of my thread, but as of now I don't know shit. But I definitely want to expose myself to a big amount of precious metals. The prices of gold and silver seem really high and I'm worried if the world is relatively stable under Trump the prices will drop?
>>
>>59228030
Perhaps. The short answer is none of us really know, but Trump is unlikely to save the collapsing fiat dollar system. He could, however, put it on life support for an extended period of time.

You could still buy the gold Bitcoin round if you really like it. It’ll just be slightly more difficult to sell when the time comes and only worth the melt value. Not a big deal IMO. If you’re new though I’d mostly stick to whatever gold sovereign coin is produced in your own country.

appreciate the help. What about gold? would i be wrong in going half in bars for each metal, and the other half for each going with coins like this? Is renting a good security storage room a safe enough place to hold all this?
>>
>>59227994
>until I buy a 2nd house and rent it out when housing is cheaper
The yield curve is reversing quite violently already, so 2025 will be a full gear recession, might be an opportunity. How much % cheaper compared to curret prices are you considering buying RE?
>>
>>59228065
I've never sold gold, but I'd imagine coins may possibly be more liquid than bars? Another anon who sold in the past may be able to answer better than me regarding form factor and liquidity.
>renting a good security storage room a safe enough place to hold all this?
That's a major counter party risk. Buy your own safe, something that can be hidden easily and bolted to the wall.
>>
>>59228065
>is renting a good security storage room a safe enough place to hold all this?
Until you have more than $20k in metals sitting around I’d just keep it at home, hidden, locked away and guarded with guns.
>>
>>59228068
>% cheaper compared to curret prices
15% but preferably over 20% cheaper. I'd like a house in my neighborhood that I can walk to in order to collect rent on the first of the month.
Alternatively I've also been considering farmland property, rent out the field and if there's a barn w/ stables, rent them out to horse owners. Would need more insurance but that's like having multiple tenants.
>>
>>59228094
the original idea was roughly 80k into gold and 50k into silver. I live in an apartment for now, so I am worried.
>>
>>59228098
>apartment
My opinion, and not financial advice, is that you should buy an affordable house first.
>>
>>59228105
>an affordable house first.
Doesn’t exist. A good house when I was growing up was only $60k new. Same house today is going for $240k. Boomers are disconnected from reality because they rode the housing (and dot com) bubbles and now they think everyone else has money and properties too.

Also I just have to lol at the idea of taking on an insurmountable amount of debt in exchange for giving up all my shiny rocks
>>
>>59228098
In the U.S. there are vault services for that. Or, you can in fact use a rental storage unit. I’d just be very careful about what how you store the metals. Maybe get some duffel bags full of old clothes and a piece of old furniture in there to make it look less appealing to would-be thieves, but none of my storage units have ever been broken into.
>>
>>59228065
>What about gold?
those ARE gold coins you fool.
coins are always more liquid than bars. bars are best for low premiums and large orders. (>200 oz)
>Is renting a good security storage room a safe enough place to hold all this?
no, that's a target, the safest thing you can do is live in a high trust neighbourhood (white) and tell no one about your stack. even people who are your friends will blab, if you want it hidden, keep it secret.
>>59228098

As opposed to going all in on digital assets that can be stolen from you even easier? Nobody can steal cash or metal off of you without catching hands or a 9mm first.
What happens if the internet gets turned off or even restricted from civilian use? What if global governments openly restructure the internet that only the military can use it? What then genius?

It would largely depend on the strength of the dollar increasing, and I don't think the odds are good. Dollar index increased as a kneejerk reaction to Trump. Trump's policy is very geared toward monetary easing. He's said multiple times before he wants interest rates at zero. That's rocket fuel for asset prices.

Basically zero. I don't see the dip dipping much more than this we are still up from 3 months ago. That's while the economy is supposed to be doing better than before because Trump is coming in to save us all or at least enough people think that. Until January 20th people will be throwing shit at each other about what ifs and the economy will chug along because of that. After January 20th I have no idea what will happen. Orange man will have most of the world against him. The powers that be don't want to drop this house of cards on the current administration's head that's for sure.

PMs are the most difficult asset for government to confiscate. Real estate, vehicles, bank accounts, pensions, IRAs, 401Ks, any brokerage account, tax returns, wages, salaries, securities, ALL much easier to confiscate than PMs. The idea that the government is going to track down a handful of 4chan posters and risk going to their ninja booby trap lairs to snag a few ounces of PMs is a joke. And to top it all off, the government can steal everything denominated in dollars through inflation. Literally everything else you can do with your money is more risky than buying PMs.

Right now absolutely. I remember being told a few years ago it was about 10 grand USD to even deploy a SWAT team for a fake swatting call where nothing major happens except some dipshits getting chewed out.
When the prices of precious metals explode I would imagine the CIA bagging certain low level people for their precious metals especially the troublesome ones. APMEX keeps records of what gets shipped where the CIA won't have a hard time starting somewhere. It just really depends on the desperation levels from everybody involved because doing that shit means we've basically become a failed state that preys on its own citizens to buy just a little extra time. Trump would sooner order the special forces to raid mexican drug cartels for their gold than use them on tax paying American citizens.
If Uncle Sam can't even afford to eat then this circus is over there won't be any rules left anyway.
