what's actually the point of the tariffs? i don't think he'd actually want 10% tariffs on everyone, and an effective embargo on china. that's just ridiculous and would fuck shit up for us in a bad way.

what was the original reason? the narrative was that there was some "unfair" trade with literally every country on earth, but that isn't true.

i'm trying to understand what he's after. what is a good outcome? what does success look like to Trump?

Trump has drawn a line in the sand. You are either subservient to the US empire, or you will be punished. He is waving a gun around in a crowded room, and shows he is crazy enough to fire.

This was a show of force. Over the next 90 days, expect new agreements to whittle down the 10% tariffs to something reasonable, in exchange for cooperating with the economic isolation of China. Previously, countries were openly talking about dedollarization and the multi-polar world. This is an attempt to reverse that trend, and start bleeding China using remaining American leverage.

Will it work? Or will this actually cause a flight into BRICS? Good question, but this is the play.

It's just a tax that will bring in more money (from US consumers) to the federal government. Money, which Trump hints could be used to offset income tax. Tariffs are paid by the importer. But a lot of companies, e.g., in the EU, have been built on exports to US, so obviously its also in the EU's interest to protect those businesses by negotiating deals. US tariffs would not directly hurt EU consumers. Indirectly, probably.

>>60220538
yeah but we can't actually endure tariffs that high on china. we are reliant on them for manufacturing, and it would take a long time (read: decades) and a lot of suffering to make us not reliant on them. so what is the point?

if the goal was to disconnect from chinese reliance, the we should have gotten the memo in 2020 but now it's 5 years later and we're in the same place.

Some *important* clarification on Mexico and Canada tariffs from a White House official. Seems like Secretary Bessent perhaps misspoke:
- Fentanyl tariffs on Canada and Mexico remain unchanged: USMCA trade is tariff-free, non-USMCA trade is tariffed at 25% (except for energy and potash at 10% tariffs)
- The baseline 10% tariffs did not go into effect on Canada and Mexico on April 5, and neither country is getting the 10% baseline now
>>
>>60220828
Germany and Canada literally got closer to China due to this fiasco
Trump destroyed America's reputation as a stable, reliable partner. China in contrast seems so much more reliable
Just because your portfolio shows green today doesn't mean inflation is not coming or countries trust us all of a sudden
Besides this is a 3 month pause. If he doesnt surrenders again in 3 months, the markets will tank again
But by then we will start feeling the effects of 100+% tariffs on China and inflation, so it may be even worse than it is now

That is the intent. Will it work? That's anybody's guess. The question is, how exactly does Trump plan to use the 10% tariffs as leverage for convincing other countries to help hurt China? What leverage do they have over China at all in the first place? Where is China weakest right now?

Additionally, now China knows the plan. What do they do, knowing they are the main target of all of this? Was the Bond Market a legitimate weakpoint they can now target? Etc. The next 90 days are very crucial in the multi-polar world saga.

I think what people don't realize is that the tariffs only apply to vessels that left port today, 4/9, or later. Meaning everything already in transit is not affected.

It takes two months for a container ship to travel from China to the US. And it'll take warehouses another 2 months to burn through their current inventory. So we've got 4 months before we even start to notice the tariffs effect on the economy. There is no way in hell that the 125% rate is still going to be on China in 4 months. Even if China does literally nothing, Trump will bend the knee before then.

US facing businesses in China usually ship via air, because customers don't want to wait 2 months for a container ship to slowly waddle its ass across the pacific. But air shipments make up a tiny minority of the goods we import from China.

Not much a problem when everyone else have the same tariffs. Well no China get much more. This means euro products who have chinese competitors will sell more in the US. With 10% on everything it's just a taxe on americans consumers. They will still buy our wines and shit, they will still buy the switch 2 when it's out. If tariffs are unequals by a large margin then it's deloyal but now we just have to compete with american made products so we will be fine. Plus they will probably get lowered at some point.
What matters is eurostocks are up.

The thing is - he was correct about 90 days delay. It was insider information being spewed, White House had to deny it in MINUTES to avoid early bull run.
That thing about "Japan started to dump bonds, so Trump got scared" is retarded. This whole market movement this week was artificially created by Trump and his cronies to milk money from clueless market.
It's pretty normal for US politicians to engage in insider trading, after all.
>>
>>60221744

I have no financial position in the market but I have some questions, especially after the wild ride of this past week. Is this entire stock market not just completely fake and vibes based? What's the point? Why not spend the money on real things like infrastructure and education. Is this whole system not going to unravel? Americans are getting dumber and poorer, you can't keep printing money, squeezing the workers and also having it all be based on a 100x long on the middle class.
>>
