The number stopped mattering at 104%. That is an untenable percentage and necessitates quick negotiations or counter counter retaliatory etc. Point being it's already high enough that US/China trade is on the skids pending some kind of truce. So any

>no no no U 200
is completely meaningless. Increasing level of shit not being traded that wasn't being traded before.

275 percent two-way tariff.
US isn't buying anything from China any time soon, we're not exporting anything to them either. No company is every going to pay those tariffs.

It's clear from the recent escalation that Xi thinks Trump will flinch first based on him deciding on an even further escalation.
It's about ego and national prestige now, whoever backs down first is the world's greatest coward.

>>
>>60243859
Can you please explain what a trade embargo would mean in simple terms. Like don't use big economic mumbo jumbo. Also what does that mean for supply chains?

The tariffs are just hypothetical numbers right now. So what does 125% Chinese tariffs mean in practical terms right now...and is that subject to change?

It's also so complex and I am not able to digest it all because I was inbred....my parents are a son and father so my dad fucked his mom and got her pregnant with me so I have some cognitive issues that prevent me from understanding the downstream, practical implications of the tariff chicken game being played between Trump admin and China
>>

>>
>>60243852
It means that the US and China are straight up not trading with each other anymore until the situation changes.

No company is going to be willing to pay those tariffs, it would be economically unviable.
This is now entirely a game of 'who's gonna bitch out first and look like a wimp on the global stage'.

Expect both China and the USA to try various methods to increase trade with other countries and trading blocks to compensate as they both try desperately to outlast each other in what seems like it's going to be a long, drawn out bloodbath of a trade war.

It means what it is. Embargo means block to all trade. A tariff above 100% for ALL industry amounts to a total halt of all trade, a trade embargo.
>what does that mean for supply chains?
Hope to God you weren't relying on china for any essential components and can't stomach the cost, because if you were, good night.

Thanks for the simple explanation. China and USA are huge trade partners so it seems untenable to shift supply chains rapidly away from China. Does that mean the cost of goods sold will go up massively in coming months?

Eh, depends how much it'd cost to get from elsewhere or if that's even possible.
Cheap Chinese shit at 100+% tariffs is still kinda doable.

>>
>>60243900
If the tariffs continue?
Yes, the costs will go up massively.
Expect some products to simply stop being sold in the US at all for a while too, as the company will not be willing to pay the import tariffs (specifically applies to products that are made in China, where the company making it does not have any other factories in other countries).
>>

Chyna's economy will suffer a downturn casue they can't sell shit, reduction in buying power due to currency devaluation, wage stagnation.
America's economy will suffer higher prices, higher interest rates, market contraction leading to higher unemploymet - i.e staglfation.
>>
>>60243918
The goal (in theory) is to encourage/force companies to build factories for manufacturing somewhere else (ideally in the US).
In practice it's more just an attack on the other nation's economy (a two-pronged attack though, as tariffs have a 'backfire effect' on your own economy as well).
>>
>>60243934
Meanwhile in reality nothing ever happens
>>
>>60243916
>If NO one can afford to trade, it might as well be the same as no trade at all.
Special things only sourced in china will probably still be bought and theyll eat the cost and pass it in things like machinery
>>
>>60243928
>Will this pressure industry to come to America?
The US doesn't want cheap chinese plastic spewer factories. So no. What'll happen is that china routes goods through Cambodia and Vietnam and the deficit with Vietnam and the gang gets even larger as those who can afford it rush to relocate.
>>
>>60243918
The idea is to make it equally/less profitable to have production outside the country than to have it onshore. The problem is that this is getting out of hand and the extremity of it is probably just going to make companies downsize and wait for Trump to leave the white house.
>>

That's mostly raw resources, china has very few developed essential components. It'll be easier and less expensive to buy rare earths and shit from south america in the short term.
>>
>>60243928
>Will this pressure industry to come to America
Unlikely, more likely companies will build factories in some other nation with low wages and lower tariffs (assuming Trump doesn't reinstate the bigger tariffs he was previously threatening).
>benefit the American economy and middle/lower class
Definitely not. This is going to suck infinite dick for the American lower and middle classes, everything will get more expensive, any factory jobs that do return to the US (which will be very few) will be low-paid (as factory jobs tend to be).

How much this will impact China will depend on whether other trading blocks come in to absorb some of the lost trade opportunities.

China has a massive advantage here, particularly because of Trumps global tariffs hurting international goodwill for the US.

If he had opened with just tariffing China, the US would be in a much stronger position right now. But he's pissed everyone off instead. Expect other countries to make deals with China over the US in most cases.

Even worse, chickening out on the international tariffs for 90 days has created a 3 month opportunity for those countries to negotiate deals with China.
This could end VERY badly for the US.

His advisor Nevarro I think is responsible here. He seems to have convinced Trump that the US could transition to a producer economy by initiating global tariffs.

Navarro hates the US being a service economy, he wanted US to become like China in terms of manufacturing.
Of course, this was a pipe-dream and using tariffs to try and force it was a terrible idea.

TLDR: Immense incompetence from a delusional boomer trying to return America to 'the good old days' when 80 percent of people worked in mines or factories in the 1920s.

>Xi Jinping calls on European Union to jointly 'resist' 'coercion'

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday called on the European Union to join China in "resisting" "any form of unilateral coercion." Chinese state news agency Xinhua reports that.
“China and the European Union should assume their international responsibilities, jointly protect economic globalization and the international business environment, and jointly resist any form of unilateral coercion,” it sounded.
The statement cannot be read as anything other than a response to U.S. President Trump's aggressive trade policies. On Wednesday, he may have pressed the pause button on most import tariffs, including those on the European Union, but China is still subject to a sky-high 145 percent tariff.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is visiting China on Friday to strengthen mutual ties. “We need mutually beneficial relations and must promote balanced trade and investment,” Sánchez said before the meeting began.

I'm really wondering the same, on whether US companies will hike prices for US consumers to cover import costs but leave prices the same for the same products in other countries. It'd be bullshit to hike prices for other countries since the production price isn't increased and the tarrif only happens when it arrives in the US.

Sincerely, how? This literally shouldn't be possible. Do you live in the middle of nowhere? Get to a real city, but not one that's too big. They are. During the height of the pandemic, they could make $5,000 to $6,000 a month easily in a major urban center. That was a given. But as someone who worked both DoorDash and UberEats for two years my income was only ever around $1,600 or $1,800 a month after gas. The Faustian bargain these platforms give you is to tear up your car in exchange for the equivalent of $12 an hour after what you pay in gas. Maybe in San Francisco or Los Angeles they can make that much money, but certainly not anywhere else.

The ones who do taxi service (Uber, Lyft) make more money than the food people and I have spoken to people who make $5k doing that.

>they said it wasn't that rare for them to make $5k-6k a month
I am both sorry and happy to inform you that you were being baited by plebbitors, bad faith posters here, and straight up liars. The only people to make that much money from tips are like, bottle girls and strippers in NYC. On busy weekends I've known bartenders and other tipped workers to bring home anywhere from $100 to 400 depending on the night and the amount of staff, but it's highly inconsistent. It's also just plain miserable work that everyone quits after a couple years max for a reason.

Maybe there are some fringe cases of Uber Eats drivers making that much, but they'd be driving literally every waking hour and only making hundreds in tips on holidays. The average uber eats driver is shit at their job and doesn't get tipped much if at all because they usually don't know English, get directions wrong, or literally steal the food. Meanwhile, you have actual job security, (presumably) a healthcare plan, and room for promotions. Don't beat yourself up man. You're winning.
>>

You don't get good exchange rates, you suck it up for wherever you are buying in to.

You do realize that a lawyer can legally serve as an agent on your behalf and handle the whole process for you, right? You can hire a reputable real estate lawyer or an established law firm to handle everything, and explain to you in human terms "if we do this transfer, this is how much GBP you're going to get".

It would probably take the stress off of you just to give the process to someone else.

yeah I know russia was pushing that shit in germany really hard, and it worked out wonderfully for them. Germany did something really really stupid
Got rid of their nuclear
started buying electricity from france, which is 80% nuclear
Got rid of their other power plants, went wind and solar
turns out wind and solar don't work too good when the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't shine, WHO KNEW!!!
So they made coal plants to cover the difference for baseload
and started buying more energy from russia

It made energy more expensive, hurt the environment more, was a geopolitical mistake.... it was like the worst decision in every area.
but the green energy scam has been festering in europe for a long long time. That's not all russia doing.
