Last times line went down was because of real reasons. The COVID pandemic and the housing burst were "real", unlike this time where the entire problem is the orange retard being a retard. I think investors are just hoping that Trump will relent. As soon as Trump relents, everything goes back to normal.

We don't yet know if the tariffs are going to stay, or if they're going to go. It's a slow-burn kind of problem and the markets don't yet know how to react.

But generally speaking, if things are bad? You buy. Things good? You buy. Things crabish? You buy.

There is still hope that the US will be worth investing long term. Barring the US completely cratering, the line will keep going up.

Why are people optimistic for deals? He made one deal already, Israel came cut their tariffs, said they'd 0 the trade deficit, and they still have reciprocal tariffs. You should probably learn a bit more about options if this is confusing.
1) Check the cost spread. Could be someone just put some at a really high price, and there is really no sell action at that level
2) Options are priced on demand. If lots of people think the market is headed down, they will hold up a lot better even if the underly stock is going up. SPCE or any other dead in the water stock see this all the time.

Put yourself in the shoes of an investor, leader in another country or someone looking after a pension fund. Do you seriously believe any of them are going to see the US as a reliable partner in the world?

Even if Trump is dragged out of office now you still have the problem that the US has allowed the presidency to accumulate unchecked power and there's a motivated base of Americans who want to bring in Trump's policies. Britain is still on shaky ground from Truss and there was a system in place to quickly remove her followed by inserting the candidate the markets liked most.

Trump fucked the fundamentals and the dollar is getting dumped. But the US is top of the pyramid. It's still worth trading with the US over 10% tariffs. Countries are not going to stop selling to America over that (though they may start looking other markets to make up the difference). The American market will (hopefully) survive Trump and that's what matters. The only people that will suffer will be Americans, and countries like North Korea are proof that a population is going to suffer what they will and that's it. Only way Trump is going to pay for this is if the people get angry at him, but that won't happen because half the country is captured by Fox News, and the other have their leaders fucking suck at messaging or trying to make Trump look too bad.

The point being, tariffs aside, the US is still an inherently strong market to do business with and the fundamentals are huge. It's going to take more than one orange retard to scare the markets off.

They all work from NOAA which itself also has to draw on data being freely exchanged around the world. You can't model climate without a global system of data centres (with some of the most powerful computers in the world), analysts, sensors and calibration (the latter is especially important) - people have spent their entire careers trying to develop a private sector model but you can't because the system either breaks on scale or your international partners say "well why the fuck would I give you our readings from Siberia for free if you're going to sell them?"

We can now as a planet expect worse forecasting which means less predicative power for natural disasters, poorer infrastructure planning, worse agricultural resilience and more problems with air and maritime traffic.

I'm not saying the US hasn't lost social capital. Long term, the effects of this administration will result in the US being much, much weaker than it would've been without the orange retard in charge. If there was a line that said "things that could have been" we would be in the red. But there is no such line we can see. All we can think of is the US slowly becoming more and more retarded until the floor caves from under them or China jumpscares them from behind the couch.
>>

Japan + China are the biggest owners, so they can definitely do it. China has been selling US treasuries before this started, but now Japan has started too. From CNBC:

>The move marks a stark reversal in how investors view Treasurys. Traditionally, investors have turned to U.S. debt as a safe haven during tumultuous times. That doesn’t appear to be the case this week as China and Japan appeared to be selling Treasurys amid the heightened trade tensions, traders speculated.

Exports to the US consist about 5% of the Chinese GDP, though they do have 10-20 million jobs dependent on them. They can survive longer than the US companies can (no product = no sales = no money). The US companies can't just make a factory and workforce pop up somewhere else magically either. It's just a retarded policy doomed to fail and its also hurting everyone without actually fixing anything (except maybe getting Trump and his cronies rich from short selling the market while it dumps, then buying calls when it pumps)

Yea, and even if this somehow wasn't allowed, it still doesn't make jobs/factories magically appear over in the US. Easy deal for them, easy win for Trump, and markets would moon almost as hard as seeing a China deal because it would signal that even the 10% is up for negotiation.

I learnt two things this week:

1) Trump is a retard.
2) But also a cuck.

He's stupid enough to fuck over the United States, but not brave enough to go all the way. He is indecisive. And I'm afraid this chimp-out will leave us in a worst position with nothing to show for it. I was sure we were getting Greenland, manufacturing jobs, and a third term. But that's not going to happen. Trump is too much of a pussy and too much of an idiot, and the rest of the world has too much leverage on the US for Trump to make their move.

I doubt long-term things will get better.
>>
>>60250725

This article is a good read about it: https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/11/ceo-trump-china-tariffs-are-doomsday-scenario-for-small-businesses.html

>With policies shifting quickly — the Trump administration has publicly altered its China tariff plans four times in 10 days — Rollens is temporarily holding his products in China, hoping to wait out the budding trade war between the two countries. He has enough inventory stateside to last roughly until June, he says.
>His options are limited. If he brings in a new shipment of products under current policies, he’ll pay a tax levy of 145% of their total declared value, paying up front to access products he hasn’t sold yet. Doing so would likely force Rollens to raise prices by at least 50% — a jump that could dry up consumer demand and leave him with unsold inventory, giving him no way to recoup the import costs, he says.

Small businesses are going to get destroyed by this, and I think bigger companies will also eventually run out of inventory sooner or later

that's a serious misreading of chinese relations with the party
people aren't really "fine" with the cultural revolution, even the party itself admits that whole thing was a hot mess of a mistake even if they take pains not to highllight that fact. post tiananmen the deal between the populace and the party is that the party would lead the country to ever better living standards/economy and the population would remain supportive of party domination. it's why the past few years with the economy slowing down, the job market being meh to shit for new graduates, and the debacle of the harsh covid lockdowns (for all the whining of westerners the chinese lockdown was genuinely dystopian) have called this arrangement into serious question.
with that said I think the CCP has a lot of leeway in this particular fight because it's so obvious Trump instigated it and clearly wants to knock China down a peg

Pretty much all the chinese social media is censored by the party, and almost everything goes through them, they've been censoring a lot of stuff since the beginning of the internet, the party decides what is relevant to the average chinese citizen, this includes the economy, so yeah the chinese have a better chance against the americans on that regard

now I'll grant you they arrested plenty of said protestors but the party is most certainly not omnipotent nor capably of 100% stifling dissent.
you have to keep in mind that from 1991-2019 the chinese economy never grew less than 6%, and if you exclude 1989-1990 you could stretch this back to 1981. it's one thing for people to acquiesce to a one party state when the party on the economic front has transformed china, but if the economy somehow slipped into recession that would cause serious issues
