If you don't know this graph, then it's very grim. But I guess nobody in this mememarket knows about it, why would they, line goes up after all.
BUT I'll be kind a provide a simple explanation.
You know how CPI is a basket of observable prices of things they look at (rent, energy, goods, and so on)? Whether or not you agree on this basket is another topic altogether, and inconsequential anyway as long as the basket remains consistent across years.
Well, just know that there's usually on this basket ~10% reserved to estimated/statistical prices instead of real observable ones.
Suddenly this 10% is now 40% of the basket.
I don't think I need to spell it to you what this means. You're a sound adult, you should understand.
>>
I just realized that Dollar General is going up and Walmart is going down because Walmart is actually a step up for many Americans. DG doesn’t care about SNAP.

Thats actually fucked up.

The US market views this as neutral or positive due to the recent history. Trump applies tariffs, Canada makes concessions, Trump applies different tariffs, Canada concedes again. Carney just rolls over under the slightest pressure. Canada does not have a great deal of leverage in the matter as it actively interferes with deployment of its own resources on environmentalist/globalist grounds.

It's hilarious

S&P Global: "we are likely to continue to view capital as a weakness, because Strategy's bitcoin holdings are likely to grow materially"
So basically "the more Bitcoin they buy, the weaker their capital becomes.”
That single sentence is the most revealing thing they’ve ever published about how the fiat risk model collapses when confronted with non-sovereign collateral.
If Strategy held U.S. Treasuries, S&P would call it “high-quality capital.”
But if Strategy holds the hardest asset in human history, they mark it as negative equity.
They’re essentially admitting their capital model is tethered to fiat correlation, not actual solvency.

We are SO early.

Basically if you think the stock will go to 250 then you buy 250 calls. Then you pick a time frame for when you think that will happen. 1 week, 1 month, 1 year. Most of the time you will be wrong when buying out of the money calls it is not a smart thing to do. But the small chance it worked you'll get great returns

It's not technically betting. It's buying a futures contract that pays out if your selected candidate wins. And since it's a contract, it's a contract, it's not a bet, and thus not technically gambling. It's under the jurisdiction of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, not gambling regulators

That's quite interesting actually. I wonder if having the price of the contract set by market forces and not the contract writer is the distinction which makes this legal? A casino could not, for example, set a "contract" for entering a blackjack game because the dealer behaviour and thus the odds are set by the house

>>
>>61209273
From 2000-2010 the sp500 went down 7%, with 3x leverage you would have lost 92%.
The fact that the market recovered so well after the gfc and didn't face a great depression or post-bubble japan 30 year bear market was not set in stone.
>>
>>61209362
>I would do SPLX

>>
>>61209330
Just because people were celebrating doesn't mean they were buying. Most likely the vast majority are just holding; after all, who on earth would still have any uninvested cash at this point?
>>
>>61209335
Kind of, that's part of it. The contracts trade on the exchange between $0 and $1 (each contract pays $1 if its event happens). So you buying a contract means someone else is selling it on the other side. If they win, they don't have to pay anything and keep whatever they sold the contract for. It could be the exchange, or someone affiliated with the exchange, but maybe not. The price, and thus the "odds", is set by the market. It's opposed to regular event betting (i.e., sports betting) where the other side is usually the betting house, who sets the odds, takes your bet, and pays out if you win. The contracts system is closer to parimutuel betting for horse races, where bets go into a "pool" and the winners get a share of it. Though, it's still different at a technical level. Also, it wouldn't really be possible to do it for table games since they still need to be registered contracts with the CFTC or someone in order to not be bets at a legal level. They would have to register new contracts for every hand.
Also, this is all "technically legal" right now. Not everyone agrees with it. Individual US states are responsible for regulating gaming, and they are not happy that exchanges are letting people essentially gamble like this, so there are lawsuits going on and we'll find out how it turns out.
Not to shill for Matt Levine, but you should subscribe to his Money Stuff newsletter, he discusses this issue pretty often lately.

Ok, but it's set in stone now. Nobody is afraid of stocks anymore. After covid and liberation day, there is literally no chance of a big sell-off ever again.

>>61209375
If I decided to move forward with this plan of using leverage. Right now I just have VOO and it feels absurd to be up merely 25% a year. There's zero risk, what the fuck is anyone hesitating for?
>>
>>61209362
Just look at the charts and backtests then. S&P has a long enough history for leveraged funds. You will see that 3x leverage takes significantly longer to recover from drawdowns. After a persistent bear market that time to recovery could be multiple years. You may believe that there will never be a big drop. But there was a 20% drop less than 5 years ago. Covid was 30%. If those drops occur slowly rather than quickly, it will be even worse, as due to how leverage rebalances daily, your losses will decay at higher velocity. If you want to hold leverage long term keep it to 2x or lower at the very least.

Those were like four years ago and four MONTHS ago respectively, is this your first bullrun and you think nothing significant will happen in the world between four months ago and your retirement? Decay is a real thing to some extent, and if you sell during drawdowns because for example you lost your job like has happened to a huge number of people many times during recessions, you may not be able to diamond hand your 93% fucked port

Ok, fine, but then let's look at it a different way. The S&P won't ever pull back 30% again. (I'd even say 20% but just for argument's sake, let's entertain the retardedly far-fetched premise that it might pull back 29.999% even though that's impossible). So if the S&P were to ever pull back, let's say, 15%, it would be a no-brainer to go all in with leverage, right? It might draw down another 15% from there but you can easily tank that even with leverage. And furthermore, everyone is aware of this fact. Everyone knows if it pulls back even 15%, it's basically free a free infinite money leverage free-for-all. Everybody knows that. Which means, it will never pull back even 15%. People will pre-empt it, and moreover, people simply won't sell, because everyone knows everyone will buy if that happens. Therefore, going all in with leverage today carries no risk.

That's actually worse for a leveraged fund than it dropping all 30% at once. More down days magnify losses as you have a lower starting point. So two down days are worse than one even if the underlying's 30% is the same.

Look at it this way, no leverage means you don't know where the market is going, 2x leverage is for bull runs, and 3x is for v-shaped recoveries. Even in a bull run, eventually 3x will eventually fall behind less leverage as it's pretty unlikely to have long runs with 80% green days.

it could pull back because things will continue to happen people can't predict + not everything thinks like you do + people are often forced to sell or prevented from buying during recessions for obvious reasons
If the fact that all of these rejoinders have been empirically demonstrated during dozens of recessions during our lifetimes doesn't convince you, all I can say is fuck around and find out, repeating the same arguments is meaningless

We have had literally nothing but that for 15 years straight.

There will never be a recession again because they will just change the definition of a recession, or report positive GDP and later "revise" it downward. And if there is a recession, the fed will lower rates, which means unstoppable gigapumping even if millions of starved corpses litter the streets.

I just cashed out a small "Roth" IRA, about $6k. It came from a pension rollover this year, I believe it should have been a traditional IRA but was mistakenly labeled Roth... or converted.
Do you think it's likely the IRS will say I owe tax?

You can only take out contributions out of a same year Roth IRA without penalty. Even if you meet the age requirement for earnings withdrawal, you have to wait 5 years after a rollover for penalty-free earnings withdrawal.

I sold a significant holding in Japan's Nikkei today because the euphoria over Takaichi pumping stimulus is wrong-headed.

1. She doesn't command the numbers to push through the stimulus she wants. Not even in her own party.
2. She has a reputation as someone who can't compromise which is a liability in a minority coalition.
3. She has no plan to resolve Japan's debt or the growing payment crisis.
4. Her plan consists of massive borrowing to support stimulus and pressuring the BoJ to keep interests rates low, the BoJ won't do this because it needs to get a handle on inflation and the LDP need it to do this because rising prices are upsetting the voters.
5. She's cut from the same clothe as Truss and the only thing that will stop her going the same route is the political paralysis.

It won't implode but I expect the market will soon wakeup with a hangover for betting on only an upside.
