I got a gooseneck kettle for Christmas. I've definitely over-extracted on my Hario Switch.
>Grind level 4 on a Fellow Ode
>Abaca natural filters
>212°f
>20g goffee
>120g water with open bottom
>120g water with closed bottom
>wait 2 minutes
>open to drain
The bed of grounds is perfectly flat but the brew is absolutely over-extracted. How should I change my technique to troubleshoot?

do you have lots of dairy/sugar/carbs?
probably just putting the wrong kind of fuel in your body, like you get through the day but sub optimally.
i cut back my sugar/carbs/gluten/dairy consumption by like 80-90% the last few months and have found that i need less coffee to get through the day.
also adding a range of nuts and berries as snacks during the day.

also going to the doctor and getting a blood/urine test will help alot to narrow things down.

it could also be a sleep quality problem
so even if you are getting a full nights sleep, it might be of low quality. like an old mattress that isnt supporting your body enough, so your mind gets rest but your body isnt able to relax and recuperate in the same way.

if you are always tired, drinking more coffee isnt going to fix being tired. its just going to trick your brain into feeling it less for a short time and then its going to come back.

did you get a coffee sock?
>>
drinking my png blue mountain for the first time.
mellow but fruity.
cherry and chocolate.
did it in my moka, gonna try filter tomorrow.
family wont be gone until the new year so still dont have much time to really get to know the hg1, but from the little time i have spent with it.
its a beast.
no room for error, if you fuck up its your fault.
no excuses.
when you are using it it sounds exactly like this.(not because the burrs are touching or that there is a problem i think thats just how the gearbox sounds or something)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msf3YeHdEuI

the blind shaker has transformed my workflow.
i think the tolerances on the lid should be tighter because some coffee will find itself into that tiny gap between the body of the shaker and the lid and then will fall onto the counter when you take it off to dose.
maybe its user error, idk.
just a small thing i noticed.
also i think there should be twice as many magnets on the funnel, i shouldn't be searching for a magnet when putting it back on, i know you just twist and it will snap on but it feels like the gaps between magnets is a bit too big.

also while doing some seasoning/testing the other day it made me realize that the rok was a grinder, just from the sound and the feel, but the hg1 CHEWS coffee, thats the only way i can describe it.
every moment you are turning the vertical crank shaft you can feel the burrs chewing the coffee. like a monster eating, snapping, grinding the bones of its victims.
its a totally different sensory experience.

a final note for now is doing rdt(which imo is mandatory for the hg1, and in fact needs an extra spritz or 2 than the rok) and then trying to put the beans in is more annoying than the rok, the hg1 has a lot less clearance.
im not sure how to remedy this, maybe using a spoon from the dosing tray? idk that seems pretty crude.

thanks for reading my blog.
oh and giving little(20g) bags of home roasted png blue mountain as gifts for christmas went down a treat.

I can't wait to pick up my Philos and brew some washed Pink Bourbon.

I'm going to try out two Switch recipes (Sherry and Emi) and a simple 2-pour V60 recipe.

I will also try some new filters (Cafec medium roast).

It's going to be a great start to the next year!

>the blind shaker has transformed my workflow.
Based. Apparently the new wugs are shipping with their own tumbler/shaker now. I might have to get one ordered, but if I do that I should probably also get the side doser and another set of burrs :/ Currently sipping the minmax Janson at 1:22. No bypass, sworks dripper, steeped bloom, sibarist fast flats, melodrip, wet wdt etc etc. Its divine. I'll be very sad when I deplete the couple hundred gs I've got frozen. 50th birthday 50hr ferment Pepe will be here in a few days though.
>a final note for now is doing rdt(which imo is mandatory for the hg1
That might calm down a bit as you get it seasoned.
>then trying to put the beans in is more annoying than the rok, the hg1 has a lot less clearance
The loveramics doser isn't a good pairing? I bought an amazon tea cha he to try out that workflow but
> seems pretty crude.
I ended up basically fingerbanging the beans out of it. Now I just use it to weigh, spritz, then transfer into the dosing cup that came with the 83a. These "style" grinders(hg1,2,key,wug) seem intentionally designed for bean cellars/centrifuge tubes.

I am looking for a good coffee machine that automatically grinds fresh beans, and makes coffee.
no internet bullshit
something like pic related
>inb4 there are better ways to brew coffee
I dont care. I have been drinking instant coffee for decades. My coffee is 1/3rd cold milk, so I cant really taste the beans. I do not care for black coffee, and I hate using a moka pot, or a french press, or a burr grinder.
I like instant, and yes. its a skill issue.

Recommend me a good coffee maker.

>I ended up basically fingerbanging the beans out of it.
same
but the handle on the front of the hg1 is really big so i have to do a reach around and then finger it in.
im doing 20-25 grams at a time and usually 10-15 grams go in fine but the last half of the beans get stuck on the lip thing of the dosing tray.
without rdt it goes in great of course but then its alot of mess on the other side.
>That might calm down a bit as you get it seasoned.
yeh, i have a feeling a number of small quirks are because the burrs are so new.
i have read from other hg1 owners(the original not the prime) that the character of the burrs changed a decent amount over like 8 years of ownership.
so certain things im just going to assume will take time to even out instead of being a problem i need to sort out myself y'know?
>These "style" grinders(hg1,2,key,wug) seem intentionally designed for bean cellars/centrifuge tubes.
yes i would agree, but you cant rdt with those.
so unless i buy(i dont want to) one of those stand alone ion beam things to eliminate static i dont see how i would be able to use a bean tube.

also(probably not) do you know if the weber blind shaker can fit the hg1?
i saw in hoffmanns video that it attaches magnetically to the grinder instead of on the hg1 sitting below a magnetically attached funnel.
i was just thinking maybe the static mess would be less of a hassle if the shaker was attached right to the body.

i got alot more to say and no time to write it out at the moment, maybe later :)

How much do you want to spend and do you want espresso or drip? If you want a drip machine like that Breville, the best type of "Grind & Brew" machine are the Cuisinart DGB series. Get the DGB-850 if $230 USD isn't out of your budget, which has a very good grinder, uses metal for it's jug instead of glass and has best in class features that others don't.
If you want a super automatic espresso machine there's a lot of options. I suggest sticking to the delonghi range, and from those there's three main options. These all use the same brew head & internal mechanics, so the differences are recipes & how you can do milk.
1) Low End: Magnifica Black. Minimal options, milk steamer not a built in frother.
2) Mid-Range: Magnifica Start with Milk. Better layout of options, has a built in hot milk frother. Downsides are it's still not a proper touch screen and no cold milk option. But if all you want is hot coffee with milk, it does the job. And you can always make cold but just putting in ice cubes.
3) Higher end: Eletta Explore ECAM450.55.G (this is the cheaper model, there's a more expensive one with an extra drip cold brew feature but it's not worth the extra price imo). Does cold and hot milk options, does double shots with the larger to-go option choices, has a flip up tray for large containers (upward of 500 ML \ 17 OZ), a lot of recipes built in due to it having a proper touch screen not simple button, and a very good grinder. The more expensive model has the wifi/bluetooth connectivity to the app which let you make custom drinks but it's another feature that isn't really needed.
I bought the Eletta Explore, but if money was more tight I would have been happy enough with the Magnifica Start.

first cappuccino with the hg1
...
mhm
thats good.
its too hot to give a full breakdown of the profile but regardless i can still tell.

honestly every time i use the hg1 i feel like i have to just accept that im going to have to re-learn everything from the ground up.
its clear that everything i thought i knew basically only applies to the rok.
also, im sure this is painfully obvious to others but the hg1 is BEGGING to be used to make espresso.
that is something that is very clear to me.
its funny that is has such a large range of burr adjustment but only really wants to be used on the fine moka/espresso range.
not to say that it makes bad coarsely ground coffee but just that its like a dog that only wants to play catch the ball but you keep taking it for walks.

the coffee is cooling down now, its so good i have almost finished it already.
png blue mountain, going to have to roast some more soon.
cereal, bran flakes, dehydrated berries. maybe a hint of rice puffs...
super smooth.
when the brew was finished and i poured it into my cup, it looked and smelled really intense but its actually very light on the palate.

Oh just googled that, sweet. So the Hoffman method is allowing it to seep 7 minutes after breaking the crust after the four minute steep so the coffee grounds settle on the bottom of the cup?
>>
>>21066022
yes
the hoffmann method is to not use the press part of the french press because it just makes the coffee worse.
which means its just ground coffee and hot water in a vessel that is metal filtered.
the best part of the hoffmann method is it convinces normies that they are still making french press coffee.
