What is the best Scotch under $50 and why is it Glendronach 12?

This weekend's allocated list dropped

Probably gonna pick up an EH Taylor and a Rare Character Single Barrel, everything else looks meh.
>>
Was looking to pick up one of those Four Roses SBs that just dropped and noticed something odd going on with Total Wine pricing. The store closest to me had it listed at 89.99 when I was sure the MSRP was supposed to be around 50 bucks. So I switch stores and sure enough it's listed at MSRP. Does Total Wine play algorithmic fuck fuck games with their pricing?
>>
>>21109904
No idea, though I have always found it odd that their corporate headquarters is in a municipality that has no liquor sales outside of government run stores, so there aren't any Total wine's in the county their headquarters is located in.

I live like 2 miles from their headquarters and never shop there because the closest one is like 45 minutes away and I can drive 5 minutes to my local government run store >>21109842

No, when they do get rare scotch in, it goes on the list, but it's fairly rare.

They have a fairly decent scotch selection on the shelf as is.
>>
>>21110048
Not a bad selection.
What state?
>>
>>21110165
Illinois. I got lucky with the Weller and Blantons as there is a small liquor store off the highway near me with a good selection and only slightly elevated prices.
>>
>>21110183
What were the Weller/Blantons priced at?

I tend to grab 1 or 2 of each per year at MSRP, I can't stomach paying more than that.
>>
>>21110195
Weller was $40 before tax. Blantons was $109 before tax. Though marked up they are much cheaper than most in my area. Right down the street from where I got these a place was selling Weller for $75 and Blantons for $200
>>
>>21110206
Not bad on the Weller, $5-10 over MSRP.
I wouldn't pay more than $75-85 on the Blantons though.
>>
>>21110258
Unfortunately, it's impossible to find Blantons anywhere here for MSRP
>>
>>21110281
NTA But that is exactly why I don't buy it.
Not worth the extortion prices.
>>
>>21110281
I just wouldn't buy it if that were the case, but it has been available around me regularly at MSRP.

I could get a bottle this month but I think I'll take an EH Taylor instead >>21109842

Depends where you live, around me it's $240 for the Crown Royal 23 year golden apple, $140 for the Crown Royal 18 year, $45 for Crown Royal XO, $33 for Crown Royal Black label, and $30 for the regular Crown Royal.

All 750ml.

So I'm thinking of moving this year. I looked up laws regarding shipping spirits to most states.
This is VERY unclear. There doesn't seem to be a single page out there that accurately states in what states consumers can order spirits online and have it shipped to them from in or out of state in an easy to understand manner.
Furthermore, by checking on several websites which ship spirits and seeing what states they say they ship to, this information seems to conflict with much of the other information online, e.g. it appears a lot of these stores are shipping spirits to states where some information out there says it shouldn't be allowed.
The one page I found that seems to make the most sense had an anecdote from someone who works in the industry saying that stores who ship liquor rely on third parties for compliance with various state laws and that these third parties are either using loopholes or just straight up not complying with state laws and shipping to states they shouldn't be.
Does anyone have any accurate information on this subject? Or am I correct in assuming that it's basically easy to get spirits shipped to you in a state where it's technically not allowed because stores and their third party shippers aren't complying with the law?
>>
>>21110432
tldr is it really depends on the state, some states are much more active about chasing that kind of shit down and fining those who break the laws, some states don't give a fuck even if the law says it's illegal.

My state recently added a law that allows delivery drivers to deliver alcohol, but it requires a $1000 permit and it's only for delivering from in-state businesses. So I can order a bottle of liquor or a bottle of wine from a store in my state and have it delivered by hand within a few hours, but I can't order a bottle of scotch from Scotland (or even another US state) and get it delivered in the mail.
>>
>>21110447
I seem to get conflicting information even when Googling this subject for specific states.

I've seen more than one state law say basically the first time you get caught having something shipped to you you shouldn't that it's just a warning and not a fine, including two of the states I'm thinking of moving to, so if I move to a state like that I'll probably just find a store that ships there even though I shouldn't and order with impunity lol.

I've only had the neck pour so far, but if you can get it, I'd do so. it's the best of the 3 Signatory Vintage Unchillfiltered bottlings I have(others being an Ardmore after Islay i.e. Laphroaig barrel and a Dailuaine 14 ex bourbon). I paid about $60 USD after shipping and at that price it feels like a value, especially if you're not already experienced with red wine finishes(a proper finish too boot, not an overcoat for low quality spirit). very creamy with soft sweetness and sour bits after a few drops of water that reminds me of strawberry rhubarb jelly. easily 87+/100

they play well with each other, but I'm not sure on my favorite yet. the Ledaig is certainly the most loud of the 3 and to my surprise the Port Charlotte is the most reserved overall. there were a few, very small fragments of cork in the Linkwood, but the cork is good shape and there seems to be no tainting so I'm not worrying as the next few pours should flush the remnants out.

the Ledaig isnt particularly fruity, but it is very creamy and nutty with a moderate amount of wood spice. the PC is deceptively not smokey on the nose and the palate is more like a lightly peated Lowland style, almost too clean imo. the Shiraz finish is very fruity at first and trails off into more red grape concentrate.

I'm gonna do an infinity bottle for my bourbon collection. Should I separate the mix by flavor profile like the nutty creamy bourbon from fruity? Rye from the rest?
I understand that I won't be a master distiller but I want to create something decent at the end.
>>
>>21111242
The infinity bottle that I made out of a combination of peated Scotch, sherried Scotch, bourbon and rye ended up being absolutely fucking incredible. I'm the guy from the last thread who eventually ended up drinking the whole thing when it became perfect and I didn't want to ruin it by adding anything else to it.
I would say it will be more fun and interesting to be experimental with it and mix a whole lot of different things into it rather than separating the mix by flavor profile.
>>
>>21111266
Yeah it's for fun primarily but I don't want the mix to be horrible like undrinkable at the end and be disappointed.
ngl the mix you describe sounds gnarly in a bad way and I'm surprised that it turned out well.

>>
>>21111315
>ngl the mix you describe sounds gnarly in a bad way and I'm surprised that it turned out well.
I'd say there was a 2:1 Scotch to bourbon/rye ratio. The flavor profile was dominated by peat and sherry cask flavors.

New pickups, got the Sagamore because it's the first 100% Maryland grain to glass rye I've seen from them, all of their previous releases were MGP sourced distillate aged in Maryland. Now it's apparently using Maryland grown rye, distilled in Maryland, aged in Maryland, and bottled in Maryland, so as a Maryland native I felt duty bound to buy it.

The C924 ECBP is my 2nd bottle, the Bardstown is new to me so I'll open that one later this evening.

Figure out what you like before you start spending that much on bottles.
For example, figure out if you prefer:
>unpeated bourbon barrel-aged, unpeated sherry cask-aged, peated bourbon barrel-aged, peated sherry cask-aged, etc.
>regarding peat specifically, lightly-peated, medium peat, heavily-peated, etc.
>40% ABV, 50% ABV, 60% ABV, etc.
There's a lot of different flavors to be found in Scotch. Figure out what you like before you spend big money on bottles.

Glendronach 15 or Laphroaig 16

I assume from your love for Glenfiddich 15, you probably dont want anything too heavy, so independent bottlings may not be your bag yet. if you feel like trying out the wild side (typically the opposite of house style of official bottlings), then Laphroaig is easy enough to find but the price is going to be more(try Ledaig or Caol Ila instead)and for unpeated look for a sherried Bunnahabhain(doesnt need a lot of age). if your serious about not being able to slowly sip your bottles then the higher end drops will likely feel like a waste as they really benefit from time and air after opening.

Not that it's terribly important, but if it's a rye whiskey then it isn't a bourbon (bourbon has to have at least 51% corn in the mashbill whereas rye has to have at least 51% rye). There are some bottles that are rye + bourbon blends, though, e.g. pic related.
>>
How long does a bottle keep after opening? I have quite a few but I'm scared to open too many at a time.
>>
>>21115088
If stored properly, easily 12-18 months.

If you're opening the bottle and leaving it open for awhile that can cause evaporation and oxygenation that can degrade the whiskey, but it's generally not a big deal unless you're leaving it open for long periods of time, or leaving your bottle in direct sunlight, or having a half opened bottle sitting around for multiple years.

Feel free to open bottles and let them sit for months, or even a handful of years. Just don't leave them for 5+ years, or regularly open them and expose them to oxygen.

>>
Found a Sprinbank for the first time in like 3-4 years. 10 year for $150, 15 year for $200. What a joke lol
>>
>>21115243
$200 is basically MSRP in the US for the 15.

My local store is government-run, basically stays within ~5-10% of MSRP and they have it listed at $196.99
>>
>>21115247
Yeah fuck that. Before the hype that shit was ~$100, maybe even less. I enjoyed the 10 a lot and would love to try their older expressions but never at those prices.
>>
>>21115333
Yeah, just letting you know that price is basically the lowest price you'll find in the US these days and there isn't much (if any hope) in finding it cheaper by hunting around.
>>
>>21115341
I'm not really in the hunt for it per say, I just pop in and see whats available and any notable price differences. I'd rather wait for it to drop or just never buy it again at the rate its going. I did buy a bottle of Campbeltown Loch for like $65 which is a blended malt of the 5 major distilleries in that region and like a week later it was absolutely cleared out lol. These taters are wild
>>
>>21115403
You will likely never buy it again, with inflation and international trade the way it is right now, it will NEVER be available in the US for cheaper than ~$160 for the 15 year, and even that would be a great price right now, I expect it to continue to go up as time goes by. Wouldn't shock me if it hits $200-250 regularly within 3-5 years.

That being said if you ever make it over to the UK, it's only around $100 there.
>>
>>21115408
Its a shame but oh well. Plenty of other bottles to try.
>>
>>21115421
it's largely what pushed me to bourbon and rye, and even if bourbon has been overpriced the last few years, it's still generally a better deal than scotch in the US.
>>
>>21115421
nta but it might worth it to just get it now and only sip it 2-3 times a year like I do mine. 18 single are already averaging $250 which is at least 2x the price from 2 years ago. Kilkerran is a good alternative, but as others have mentioned basically shares the availability/pricing of Springbank more often than not.

deciding to only buy overpriced craft bourbon and then say scotch that is a little more money is a bad deal in comparison is obviously bias. bourbon isnt even imported for fucks sake. the value aspect of American whiskey in the US is fucking awful in comparison and isnt worth exploring passed the $60 range(above is tater territory).

The official price point past where the price/performance ratio of bourbon instantly drops off a fucking cliff is Woodford Reserve Double Oaked.

Nah, but there is plenty of overpriced shit in the higher price brackets.

There are some gems too, you just wont find them if your entire bourbon experience revolves around ONLY buying sub $60 bottles.

I'd rather buy Very Old Barton 100 for less than $20, OGD 114 or Old Overholt 114 for less than $30 each and I havent bought american whiskey since the end of 2022.
