>>3939745Not sure how to feel about all these (in my opinion) cute Murakamis, it's funny how often fans request him these days. I love that everybody is doing this face drawing challenge right now, it's interesting to see how characters look in someone's style who usually only draws the same two or three.
I can't believe they eventually made me feel bad for Kiyohara. Looking forward to the next season for that guy. Not only him, but some of my favorite scenes are tied to him specifically. Whole post (4 pics) here: https://x.com/uouosake/status/1876553244576714887

>>3941813Didn't some Japanese eyes n' ears fans actually trying eating beetles?
>>3941822Yeah I saw a bunch. Probably seven fans or something since a bunch of them bought them after one of them tweeted "live" about her first time eating them. Insects are almost pure protein though so most of them don't have much of an own taste (tried a bunch myself). I know it's meant to be funny in the manga but I can imagine someone actually craving them if the normal diet is almost devoid of protein as it should have been the case in the middle ages, thanks to Buddhism and Shinano's distance to the sea. Especially a warrior would need more than vegetables and rice and I am not sure how common it was to catch eel and other freshwater fish in that region.Speaking about beetles, I just saw this comic. https://x.com/bbb_aiueo/status/1876707669056077913
>>3941811>>3942576I really envy the creative character designs this mangaka manages to come up with. The majority of ngwk characters are adult men with the same hair color and clothes and often even the same hairstyle so all he can work with to make them stand out are the faces and yet he somehow succeeds. Everybody looks different in my opinion and I would go as far as say that the designs are actually quite diverse, even if we only talk about the adults. Designs that stand out for the faces are the best. A good designer can do so much with eyebrows, eyes, beards and noses alone.
>>3942579I could tell very early that both the manga and anime were of top quality for reasons such as this. The anime had superb coloring and stylization too.
>>3942579Matsui already had some practice with designing a class and a half of kids. But half of them were girls, a pretty good chunk of them had unnatural hair colors, and the modern setting gave him a lot more options for styles. It is quite impressive how he's managed to differentiate all of these men who, in many artists' styles, would look almost indistinguishable.
>>3942580>>3942581Agree, character designs are usually my main reason for picking up or ignoring a series. It's not just about whether or not you are into them, the design choices and variety (or lack of it) itself tell you a lot about a series and the creator and whether it might be good or not. Easily 90% of the anime and manga I rated very high in the last 20 years had varied and good designs. Over-designed stuff sounds like it was varied but it's usually just the flipside of lack of creativity. If the characters are samefaced the creator has to distinguish them by adding crazy hair styles, heterochromia or clothing with a billion accessories like in some gacha.

There will be a bunch of new doujinshi releases on the 26 of January, for those interested. I assume that most will be sold on toranoana. So far it already lists a doujinshi for Tokiyuki/Fubuki and one Tokiyuki + Sadamune. The latter is by the same artist that already made the other doujinshi with Sadamune and his underlings, it was pretty funny and cute IMO.
