It brought his characterization in the first 3 seasons to a head where he's an adult with the optimism and heart of a kid, and the movie having it weigh on him and he wants to prove himself as a reliable adult, but after a massive adventure where he even died for a minute, realizes there's nothing wrong with owning the kind of person he is and encourages everyone to have the optimism and positivity he does no matter how childish it comes off. He also wants to save Mr Krabs from being executed, as well as strongly desiring the manager job. There's multiple facets to it that will never be able to be replicated because the first movie used ALL of the perfect characterization for Spongebob. It's an amazing and engaging exploration of his original character.The only thing movies after that can do is at least commit to stakes of having Spongebob want to save or rescue others. That's fine, definitely better than "big guy rollercoaster." I think the only thing that could rival the exploration of Spongebob in movie 1 is if they ever do a finale film where they go all in on Krabs vs Plankton and Spongebob ends up getting them to be friends again, maybe going into business together. Though it would have to clash with movie 1 being the definitive ending, it'd have to establish it comes afterwards. But if they really nailed it and it felt worthy, it'd be fine. There's just not ambition to do so, the writing is super generic and terrible by 3, and the series isn't going to end either (and they wouldn't ruin the episodic premise by changing the status quo of their heavily relied on main antagonist.) But this is the only bigger personal want/desire they could do.
