The reasons behind the story are questionable. Gerry Conway was for it because he thought Gwen was a nothing character and preferred Mary Jane. But Conway was and is a hack writer, so what does he know?John Romita was for it because he wanted an impactful watershed moment just like the death of Raven Sherman was in the Terry & the Pirates comic strip. What he failed to realize was that Gwen had been a member of the cast longer than Raven Sherman had been and her death would inspire ill feelings in the reading public.
