Sorry I don't remember the game but I do remember they gave it like a 6 or a 7 and I then left a comment on their article asking why they don't give it a 5 if it is so mediocre and they gave me the subjectivity spiel as well as saying that their review scale isn't 1:1 with school grades. I think it was one of the editors/writers commenting. But I pressed them, saying when you think of a 10 point scale, it's intuitive to think as anything mediocre as a 5. They then said that most games have some redeeming qualities. I disagreed. I think the main point we were struggling to grasp was that my bar of standards was higher and the typical game nowadays has to do more in order to get past the 5. Like I think of 5 as the game working and the game having standard qualities of whatever genre it is in. GI and review sites in general like IGN are notorious for always giving 7s because it still maintains that illusion that it is good (which is what the game publisher/dev wants) and only until you read the review that you realize it isn't worth it, so the reviewer appears like they still have credibility. I assume Wizard back then, was even more a corporate cocksucker and worse than this.

The situation is better in live action because of the volume, people who only watch live action TV and Film at least see a lot more variety compared to people who just cartoons and meme. The way I see these small indie cartoons about wage workers, first of all if you make a cartoon yourself you can do whatever you want, and second the decision to write from personal experience says they are paying attention to what people say about writing and want to do it well with the knowledge they have. The audience reaction is gonna tell them what people find entertaining. They’ll get better when they put out more cartoons. Commercial writers are in a different boat because of the job. Animation takes a lot of time to put together, people do their best with what they have.
