Everybody has a pet with elemental powers, but their home was attacked by the evil snake of elemental darkness and so they're sailing around the world to find the main elemental powers to fight back while running into people who typically want to kidnap them and/or their pets. Also, there's pretty clearly something else going on behind the scenes beyond just "go fight the bad guy" but it's hard to tell how involved it gets when only a third of the show is translated.
