When Mason didn't like the script for the movie she also helpfully offered up Pete's name as a possible writer necessitating his own move out to L.A. and Pete in turn got Darin a job as a storyboarder for the movie meaning he and Jessica would also need to move.While out there, though, Cindy became jealous of Mason's pretty and younger co-star Marianne Winters. Also there was Bio-Dad Frankie, now working for a TMZ knockoff. Following Mason and Marianne he was able to make it seem like the two were in a relationship which caused Marianne to have a breakdown but the now Mason Jarre was able to get to her and things worked themselves out. Also, the Mason Gang managed to track down original Starbuck Jones actor Cliff Anger, befriending him and getting him a role in the new movie.Back in Westview, Bull started showing odd behavior and explosive anger and it was discovered that he likely had CTE. This necessitated his early retirement from coaching. Cory came home from the army and sold off his Starbuck Jones collection so he could buy an engagement ring and propose to his girlfriend Roxanne "Rocky" Rhodes. John was also offered a consulting role for Starbuck Jones while the old school computer was taken away to be used as a prop in the film.

Ideas are introduced but never really expanded on properly and there's no real sense of events flowing from one into the other to make the narrative more seamless. Ideas come up, then they're done, then they may be retconned on a whim depending on what Batiuk wants to do. The same with characters or anything else, like he's really only writing in the moment. For me, the handling of Sadie is always going to be the easiest thing to point to in order to explain the writing deficiencies.That said, it's still better than Dumbing of Age where the ideas are stupid and rotten at their core and then made worse by the bad writing.
I didn't understand the origin of the horrible tone whiplash in David Willis' webcomics until you started doing these storytimes of Funky.His need of characters to quip or to crack a joke right after what should be an earth shattering upset originates HERE.No wonder Willis doesn't know how to carry on a dramatic moment. He imprinted Funky Winkerbeam as the way to handle plot developments.

A lot of the gag-of-the-week strips (Holtron, test answers, I-Ching) are bad, more importantly there are too many of them. The characters are very cynically written too, with most of them existing until Batiuk got tired of playing the one note he would give them; and I can't stand those self-aware reaction faces they would all make towards the reader. It was basically trying to be teen Peanuts, but the writing/characters just wasn't strong enough.Act II starts pretty strong but it doesn't last. Wally's story is pretty ridiculous, and crashing your car after having two drinks isn't believable. There's a lot of melodrama like that starting with act II, but it still all feels just as cynically written as a lot of the jokey act I stuff imo. Just a lot more smug. And I'm not too keen on reading it all either, because a lot of these characters aren't so likeable as adults. Les is a douche, Lisa is little miss perfect, Crazy is boring. All the chicks start changing their hair, and pretty soon they all look the same and you can't tell who is who anymore. Then the art changes and everything looks worse. For every step forward, there's two steps back.Act III, to be honest, I haven't been really keeping up with it. Les looks like a soijack now. Dinkle looks like Crankshaft. It's just gross. There's been so many new characters that I can't keep up anymore. I don't know who Pete is and I don't care that he's making a comic about Starboy and the Captain of Outer Space.
