But things continued their downward trajectory for Cindy who was aged out of working for ABC and instead sent to a Cleveland affiliate thus ending her career as a national newscaster.

I've been trying to think of other comics like Funky. not necessarily "silly comic that turned serious", but rather "serious story in strip format". I guess Dick Tracy is one of them, and another that comes to mind is a 4-koma, Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro. also I quite a few webcomics would fit into the mold, but they don't really succeed.
