The days grow colder, the nights grow longer. That means /co/ Christmas cheer is coming to town. Grab some cocoa, turn on the Christmas music, get comfy, and hang out with some /co/mrades as we share stories and get into the holiday spirit.

Make merry, have a joyfultime, share some stories, read some storytimes!

And don't miss SHEOL's Christmas stream! https://vaughn

Golden Age christmas stories are wild, hell in general Golden age justice society stories are, but still thank you!
>>
Merry Christmas to everyone participating in this years Secret Santa! [this is an example not real email, not live don't actually attempt to email it, just setting up an example of how this can legally work]
Make sure to email cosecretsanta2024@gmail.com(this is just a test example email not real) with your participation, I hope for a lot of involvement this year. Read the pastebin which contain detailed instructions on how to participate! Don't post any Amazon lists in this thread!
You'll send them offsite to this email where it will be handled by TOP MEN
GiftING not just being giftED is also handled with nicknames so make sure to include one.
Post in the thread nicknames only.
Your generosity is appreciated.
https://pastebin.com/Qf7MnamE

Pastebin is just instructions, not containing lists, links, names, addresses.

>>146795966
You can talk about the process here just fine. It's just directly begging(linking) or complaining.
>>
>>146796115
I thought this was being take care on... a more plus-sized site
>>
>>146796165
An offsite Secret Santa that few visit and can't be linked here is not /co/'s secret santa.
What I have posted is allowed so /co/ can have its own as similar to years past as possible.
>>
>>146796165
yes, that other site (which was founded by old /co/mrades) is probably the best solution, and there is a thread over there. Not sure why some people are trying to co-opt shit... feels pretty sketchy ngl
>>
>>146796218
I'm certainly not taking over anything. I have set up a fake example of what is allowed.
A site you can't even name isn't a solution.
>>
>>146796218
Okay, so it's just one Anon being weird. Gotcha.
>>
You DID send off all your Christmas cards... right?
>>
>>146796322
Wot D. Hale is a Christmas
>>
>>146796115
Could you please stop spamming the same shit over and over again?

It has already been settled that these threads will be used for discussion while the other thread will be used to post the lists and status thereof. Why do you insist so many times on dictating something when as >>146796165 has already stated, things have been taken care of? Thanks for the effort but there is no need for it.
>>
>>146796226
And people have been asking multiple times when you would stop. Again, the effort is appreciated but simply not the route most of the people here are willing to take.

>>146796322
Sending Christmas card in this day and age and hurting the environment? No way!

>>
>>146796322
I didn't even mail cards when I did gift physical exchanges.

I did get an IRL present yesterday, which I only opened because it's a shirt and I was certain it was not going to fit, even though it's allegedly pre-shrunk cotton.
Now, I have to figure out how to do the exchange/return since my relative who bought this (and it is, actually, /co merch, but a tee), didn't send the receipt but I assume they can email me a code?

I'm going to get the rest of the ingredients I need to make some cookies for a holiday party on Thursday evening, because I won't have time tomorrow or Thursday day to make 'em.

No. Kicking Secret Santa to a site you cannot even name is not a solution.
I have spoke with a mod on IRC. This is allowed.
>>146796662
It doesn't matter if it's an email, discord, snail mail, smoke signals, it just can't be posted on 4chan.
>>146797633
The point is, it's allowed. It is not breaking the rules.
I get it, we're all gunshy. That's understandable. But I am proving Secret Santa is not banned.
Your offsite game is fine for that offsite.
Discussion is also not banned.

1999 finally saw the Dreamcast launch in the USA and Europe, with Sonic Adventure as a launch title (in Japan, the Dreamcast had only four titles on launch day, none of them being SA1)

As for Sonic the Comic... yeah, things were pretty bleak. The comic was now mostly reprints with just Sonic getting a new story every fortnight (the rest of the Freedom Fighters were still his supporting cast, but it's the principle of the thing...)

It was one of those story arcs that had caused so much trouble behind the scenes. When Sonic travelled to the land of Shanazar, writer Nigel Kitching was fired mid-arc due to constantly butting heads with editor Deborah Tate (Kitching was eventually brought back - I'll come back to that later - and patched things up with Tate; by all accounts they're on very good terms now and joke about how they get along much better now Tate isn't his boss.) This meant that Lew Stringer, who by this point was literally the last man standing, had to finish up a storyline that he had no input in, as well as carry the entire title... such as it was.

And this sorry state of affairs is how we find StC...

Ah yes, this is another interesting bit of fallout from the Shanazar arc - at the end of it, it was pointed out to Robotnik that no matter how hard he tries, he will never beat Sonic in the long run. This lead to him becoming a bit of nihilist - again, more on that later.
>>146797783
I've been getting into Johnny Mathis' "When A Child Is Born" for some reason - the weird little preamble and interlude he does is very corny and weird especially when you realise he's talking about The Second Coming but the lyrics are so earnest it's hard not to get caught up in the sentiment

I'm back with part 2!

For anyone wondering, the "Sonic: The Movie" being advertised was the Sonic OVA, an interesting take on Sonic that attempted to bring in a bunch of lore... that was already non-canon by the time it got an English dub, even though the dub came out to try and drum up interest in the blue hedgehog when SA1 also got a Western release.

And with that, we must take our leave of Sonic the Comic... as you can see, right after this issue they went straight into an adaptation of Sonic Adventure that played rather fast and loose with the game's story. This wasn't just their first adaptation of a Sonic game in years, it would also be the last original story StC would publish; immediately after the SA1 adaptation finished up, the comic became Oops! All Reprints! for the rest of its life, until it was quietly cancelled in December 2001. Not with a bang, but with a whimper.

You might think this was a completely stupid move in hindsight, given that Sonic got a new lease on life by moving into the third dimension... but what you have to remember is that the British comics industry was pretty much dead by this point. Egmont (the people in charge of Fleetway at the time) had had enough and just wanted to move onto something more profitable, and while Archie managed to hang on with their take on Sonic during the 00s, it's doubtful that Fleetway would've been able to claw their way back, given how fucked the market was over here at the time.

I guess we'll never know... but what *I* want to know is this: what do I do next? Shall I move onto Christmas issues of Sonic the Comic Online, a beloved fancomic that is still going to this day (afaik) or should I go back to less action-packed fare, maybe The Dandy?

I shall leave the decision up to you.

actual published books, no.
no movies either unless someone selected the one DVD off a certain someplace - although I am going to see FLOW with a group of people once it moves to a better theater for everyone concerned, so that may be what we do christmas day for a movie, since I hate the idea of mufasa because I loathe musicals in general.
/co related merch, yes, including a shirt I already opened (because I was pretty confident it wouldn't fit and would need to be returned), I also have a box sitting unopened which may or may not be a wrapped toy (action figure). I probably won't open it till this weekend. I also participated in /toy/ SS this year and received some comics, and some /co toys from that.

Won't be getting anything because I didn't hand over my list to my family this year. Also, I'd much rather get new socks and some coupon for a restaurant/massage/department store but that's what happens when you look for any reason to get new clothes or go to a restaurant

December 18th - we're only one week away from Christmas. Rather fitting that today different countries around the world (mostly Spanish-derived) celebrate the Feast of the Expectation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
It's also Republic Day in Niger and National Day in Quatar, since I got to listing out independence days.
Today's reading is a direct continuation of yesterday's - literally, starting from the very next verse. Pretty lazy, guys.
It focuses on Saint Joseph the carpenter, husband to Virgin Mary, and what he did after he found out she was with child despite not having shacked up yet. As he was considering his options, by which I mean "how exactly to send her away without much public drama", an angel appeared in his dreams, announcing that it's not yet Joever, and that the unborn child is the prophesized Messiah who will need a father figure.

Also, since there's some debate whether talking about the place for talking about our traditional gift exchanges is allowed or not, I will bite the bullet and post the name of the site in the next post, and if I get banned for it (at least for more than 24 hours) I will keep doing my dailies over there until I can come back.

I really want to get into Sandma Mystery teather, but I've not had the push yet for it, I want to get the compendium but Im not sure if they will do the rest or if they have already. The lesson here is: dont oversleep

Well, the majority says Disney, so I'll go with Disney!

This particular tale was originally published in Topolino № 2561, back on the 28th December 2004, although this English translation appeared almost a decade later in the 11th of December 2013 as part of the Disney Digicomics line (Disney's attempt to get in on the Comixology boom after they'd parted ways with... uh... kaboom.)

The writer was Ricardo Secchi and the artist was Andrea Ferraris, who both started working for Disney in the 90s and have carried on working on Disney comics to this day; you may know Secchi better as the writer of What If...? Donald Duck Became The Mighty Thor.
>>
Anyway, how's everyone's day shaping up? I just got back from grocery shopping. On the way back I ended up walking behind a mum, her friend and her son; the little tyke kept wanting to pick up sticks... trouble was, he wanted to carry sticks that were taller than he was, and could do some damage if he wasn't careful. The mum eventually managed to get him to carry a stick that was long but not hefty in any way.
>>
>>146807993
I can easily recommend it - Dian is one of the most well-written female characters in any comic book.
>>
>>146808307

Fair warning: this was the Titans in their "How do you do, fellow kids" era (as were DC in general, but MAN did they go overboard with this comic... The man responsible for setting the tone was one Bob Haney (I recently went through his run in The Brave & The Bold on my regular weekend storytime threads) who co-created Metamorpho, Eclipso and Cain (he of the House of Mystery.) He was aided and abetted by Nick Cardy (or Nick Vascardi, to use his real name) an Eisner Hall of Famer who was mostly known for his work on Aquaman.

Not many historical celebrations on December 19th. There's National Heroes and Heroines Day in Anguilla, which I guess is kind of adjacent to their separation from Saint Kitts and Nevis (since they have their own National Heroes Day in September), and Goa Liberation Day in India celebrates the annexation of the last bits and pieces that were still under European rule.
As for the reading, we're staying in the realm of prequels. This time very busy Archangel Gabriel visited Zachary, a priest in the Temple of Jerusalem, to inform him that he will be a dad and that his son will be the new Elijah. When Zack pointed out that he and his wife - Elizabeth, cousin to Virgin Mary, remember her? - were both getting up in years, and Liz was barren to begin with, he's been stricken with muteness as a punishment for doubting until the dirty deed got done. Which I sincerely wish to all of you reading this the next time someone tries to "UM AYKSHULLY" you.
Luckily, Zack was seeing to his priestly duties at the time, so when others saw he's lost his voice, they just figured he just had a divine vision and went about their day. And lo, Zach went home and took his wife to pound town.

The script is by Richard Sanchez, who has a lot of experience writing video game adaptation comics, which is it's own little niche in the industry, and has done a few short things for DC and a horror publisher, but this is probably his first real stab at this type of story, which is kinda reflected here

Art duties are by Aaron Conley, who has done a lot of work for DC, Marvel, and many other publishers, from Dark Horse to Image, and Ivan Plascencia handled the coloring duties, and that is really all reflected in the art style throughout.

That's a nicely inexplicable one. I like it. I don't really have anything comparable, I don't think. I did used to get a box of orange tic-tacs in my stocking every year and loved it. I'd just dump all of them in my mouth in one go. A customary candy I still receive from my grandmother every season is Swedish fish. It's that grandmother thing where they latch on to one thing they know you like and decide it's your lifeblood, and I don't mind at all.

I don't really have a lot of media traditions because I need to switch those up to keep them from getting stale, and they're all the bog standard Christmas things anyway. I like to rotate Home Alones depending on the year. I used to see 2 as more of a retread than it really is but in recent years I've really embraced it as a more openly cartoony sequel like Gremlins 2. I always wished the toy store had been real. That one little cameo in the hotel lobby feels more surreal every year it pops up.

Would the 24-hour marathon of A Christmas Story be considered weird if if you have your own little thing with it? My best friend and I both just leave it on throughout the day and absorb bits and pieces of it out of order until we've seen the whole thing like a Tarantino flick. We'd message quotes to each other during it.
>>
>>146821343
Is this the Charizard or the Rodan? I love both.
>>
>>146821415
Honestly I get the Swedish fish thing, I have an uncle who gives up Reece's pieces every year, I only tasted one last year...I actually liked it.

Blame the last three mergers. They laid off a lot of the DC Direct in-house staff, and that included a lot of the direct to consumer publishing people who were higher salaried, Mark Chiarello and others who guided the collected editions, was a great lost. I mean, DC had always cancelled things because there was not enough interest but that isn't unique to DC, everyone else did that - but losing those people meant loosing some of the connections that helped to make sales in the direct market and to libraries, for example.

AT&T made it worse, and Discovery even more so because both stuck DC under Warner Consumer Products, which is really more about things like coffee mugs, towels, and any other licensed product, and they care more about the synergy stuff (so Barbie when it was a coming thing) or the perennial synergy (e.g. Looney Tunes and Harry Potter).

8pm EST

with "A Christmas Carol" (2019), a three episode miniseries by FX, starring Guy Pierce as Scrooge. It is infamously one of the most cynical adaptations.

December 20th is International Human Solidarity Day as ordained by the UN. Which, I mean, big whoop, we've had it in there threads for the last three weeks (for the most part).
The reading today is also kind of disappointing, since it's the third time (after Immaculate Conception Day on the 9th >>146698858 and as an option during Our Lady of Guadalupe on the 12th >>146732844) that we cover the Annunciation. But to be fair, this IS the week for prequels. Also, all three times were during workdays, and nobody goes to church on workdays. So that way it's at least a higher chance somebody will hear about it.
At least the Old Testament reading from Isaiah finally reaches the prophecy of a virgin conception in the House of David and the son being called Immanuel, meaning "God with Us".

Except that the system doesn't have that much to do with it as the actual rules being broken. Rule 11 was broken all the time in the r9k threads because the threads consisted of 50% discussions and 50% begging. Not what happened here so there is no ground on which the bans were valid.

>>146831605
Time to eat carrots all year so I can be ready for Santa Rider!

>>146832803
Originally it was just "if you've hurt anyone, you feel pain" - the whole "doesn't work if you don't feel bad about it" b.s. was only shoved in to handwave why it didn't work on The Punisher one time, and now lazy writers have run with it so any characters they like don't have to sell for the Penance Stare.
>>
>>146832779
For some reason I was expecting more out there movies
>>
>>146832842
>have to pick between two of my favourites, who are both skull-themed for some reason
I think I would have been fine if the Punisher was just a lone and almost comical exception of "his lack of guilt intensely outweighs his numerous atrocities" just by sheer nature of his characterization.
I also assumed that like, the penance stare would pick up on any repressed guilt, so you could probably make it work "because he's human tho" for any characters that ostensibly don't feel guilt. So a writer probably could bring it back from "doesn't work if you don't feel bad" hell. But this starts to feel like
>I tagged you, now you're it
>nooo but I had a force field on, your tag didn't work
>well my tag works against force fields
>nooo that's cheating
>no YOU'RE cheating
>>
>>146832889
Yeah the movie suggestions were very standard picks. The weirder picks were half hour or hour long specials.

We're back with the Disney Digicomics line! This story was originally published in Topolino № 2509 circa 30th December 2003, although this translation came out almost a decade later, on the 4th December 2013. The writer was Bruno Concina, who was a workhorse at Topolino from 1979 until 2005, and the art was done by Luciano Gatto.

They probably realized that too much predating will dwindle the food supply, disrupting the ecosystem and their own survival.

This story was originally in Walt Disney's Christmas Parade #9, which originally came out on November 14th 1958. The art is by Carl Barks, of course, but the writer was Bob Gregory, one of the workhorses Disney comics had during the 50s-80s.

TONIGHT ON A NOT SO SPOOKY CHRISTMAS STREAM
Collected from a selection of viewer suggestions, we offer this lovely wishlist of Christmas goodies, both classics and obscure hits. First, in the days following Christmas, two abandoned toys, a dour dolly, and a wisecracking teddy bear, must make a new living for themselves when their children no longer want them after their Christmas gifts. Next, the madcap mind of Bill Plympton provides a collection of 12 shorts for the season, featuring snowmen in love, talking neck ties, murderous snowflakes, and other Christmas goofs.
Our first viewer suggested film is a popular choice for the season, symbolizing the chaos and stress that comes with the holidays in addition to the pleasures and joys of it. Watch the comedy of errors that results from Clark Griswold struggling to give his entire family the perfect Christmas in NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION.
Next, by overwhelmingly popular demand, our second film of the evening is about the difference one person can make to the world around him. George Bailey is driven to the deep end, and as the angels look upon his life, they decide to show him just how much good and wonder he has done for the world in the immortal classic IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE.
Finally, our stream takes a walk on the wild side thanks to the help of Pee Wee Herman, and all the inhabitants and visitors within his Playhouse, each celebrating in their own bizarre ways.

This comic was okay, but that digital coloring... Everybody's shoes were yellow. Their clothes were usually blue, red, and green, with some others mixed in. A lot of "humans" appeared. The animals look weird, like that dog and the polar bears. Very fascinating. It probably looked better in the 2003 version.

it might be a browser thing, stop using Chrome, it's actually not worth the insidious shit Alphabet has built in on it. I run the duckduckgo browser app but I'll be the first to admit I sometimes have to go manually to Bing/Google for searches and other reasons. But I mostly use their browser say 80% of the time.

I'm definitely using Duck Player on my iPhone when I am forced to use that to watch a YT video.
