This has to be the strangest fucking writing decision in a /co/ TV series in a long timeIt'd be like rebooting Gravity Falls or Ben 10 and having Dipper and Mabel, an Ben and Gwen being couples instead of relatives, what were they thinking, how did this get past everyone

>>147030897>thinkingNate Cash the show’s co-executive producer, chimed in on what made it all happen with the blessing of one Steven Spielberg. “We’re all big fans of the original show and hired crew that are big fans too. So everybody is coming back” he said, referring to his team with pride. On the panel before our sit-down they mentioned executive producer Spielberg called the anticipated project “the best iteration of Tiny Toons” he’d ever seen and they also introduced the new voice of Babs Bunny: Ashleigh Crystal Hairston.“I grew up in the ‘90s and I was a huge fan of Tiny Toons, Looney Tunes, but I like all of it,” Hairston said, before explaining how she found the voice. “Just to be playing Babs Bunny is wild to me. It feels very natural it feels like she was in me all along. I got the audition and I was like ‘I don’t know what to prepare for this.’ So I started watching Tiny Toons. And I was like, ‘Wait a minute no. I want to bring myself to it. I want to make this Babs my own.’”This iteration which changes a few things from the original. Gibson confirmed the change to Babs and Buster’s relationship to io9: “They’re fraternal twins, which was not an original plot point. I wanted to dive into a brother/sister relationship that looked really symbiotic and collaborative and supportive not antagonistic. Seeing two people who are really on the same page and then how do people who are so close make make new friends? You know find out who they are by these new relationships these new college experiences while still having fun and doing the dumbest stuff you’ll ever see on TV but having story and plot points and character development.”Cash added, “And they look up to the faculty, they’re established Tunes who are like their gods, but then they’re like, ‘Who am I?’ and ‘What’s my voice?’ which is a cool place to develop them as their own characters and not just mini versions of their counterparts.”
>>147034806>I wanted to dive into a brother/sister relationship that looked really symbiotic and collaborative and supportive not antagonistic. This is one of those times that creating a new character would've been much better. The showrunner is a podcaster "comedian" with no background or interest in animation who was too old to watch the show when it was new and made this decision because it made the most sense to her. The people above her just rubberstamped it because they didn't care either.

Let’s get real - more than half /co/ would not have cared how “bad” Looniversity was as long as it had plenty of Fifi/Babs/Shirley fanservice. It’s the only reason the original has any relevance on this board whatsoever.

>>147037141Ruegger and his crew had no interest in doing a "kids doing school crap" show. WB wanted young 90s Looney Tunes kids, so yeah, there had to be token efforts showing they went to school, but other than that they just wanted to make funny cartoons.
>>147031039kek, kids don't even know who the fucking Looney Tunes are anymore, what chance does Tiny Toons have with them?
>>147037177Nigga I’m not Tv Tropes
>>147037204Honestly no, the character designs weren’t enough to save this. They toned it so down that fanservice (outside very broad fetishes) was never going to happen, but people don’t care unless the writing is good enough to care for them, that’s why anyone cared for the first in the first place If they showed Babs’ uncensored tits it would get talked about but it wouldn’t be a following either unless it was a good show
>>147037247>kek, kids don't even know who the fucking Looney Tunes are anymoreAd that's a dam shame, because back in the 90's WB was pushing them hard in gaming, tv shows and of course Space Jam. >>147037204Not really. Adventures endures due to good crafting, art, story, acting, and decent gag writing in good balance. Universal audience appeal and accessibility over broadcast television. I like the sitcom premise of a show about close fraternal twins who have to learn to be more independent. It's kinda fun and cute. Of all the things to complain about, this really isn't one of them. If you think the writing or something else is bad, from the perspective of someone who has not watched the original series, fair enough. A lot of the episodes are boring and the writing is pretty tame. But all these complaints about them being siblings is overwrought. IMO the thing about this show is that it's neither good nor bad - it's quite mid, which doesn't lend itself to discussion on internet forums where hyperbolic statements of praise or criticism are the standard. I still find myself wanting to like it, honestly.
>>147037001I would
>>147030897Having Babs and Buster not be an item makes sense because they were getting paired up with other characters. Having Ben and Gwen along with Mable and Dipper be a thing is far too telling when all of the characters have a plethora of popular less controversial options.

Servo’s black, Crow’s a girl, the nu-Mads are fucking Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt, none of the riffing lands, it’s miserable to watch. So was the old show responsible for creating the modern furry community as we know it now?
>>147045208Pretty much what I think. It's kind of why I get some people are irked that Mega and Roll in Battle Network are a couple, when in the Classic series they're brother and sister. Thing is, unlike Buster and Babs, who had entire plots of episodes being based around them being lovebirds, the robots never really played on their sibling relationship, so an alternate universe making them a couple isn't nowhere near as weird as TTU making the bunnies siblings.
>>147047539No, but it helped. That was all thanks to stuff like Disney's Robin Hood and the like. That, and humanity having a fascination with animal-like people since the old OLD times.

Spike Brandt, one of the old crew members drew some art of Buster and Babs. He later went on to develop Duck Dodgers and Looney Tunes Show.
>>147047699I mean they're robots so they're not really brother and sister in the first place
>>147059262They have the same creator, but were never meant to be related at all. Nothing in the Japanese versions of the games or supplementary media (manga, books, etc) ever said they were brother and sister. That was just stuff added by NOA when the games came to the west, and then played up in the Ruby Spears cartoon where they also played up Protoman being Mega Man's brother simply because Light and Wily both worked on him.
>>147059198Funny how he only worked on the Looney Tunes TV adaptations that were actually good.
>>147059198It only now hits me that Buster and Babs would’ve been completely out of place on LTS, and yet I still would’ve liked to see it.
>>147059386OG Tiny Toons already had sitcom-esque plots like the prom episode or when Babs traveled to New York disguised as a human to star in a teen drama.
>>147039165>It was probably an underpaid sweatshop of japs being taken advantage ofI don't know why this is your default assumption. Why do you think sweatshops = higher quality?Japan makes a ton of animation, especially at that time period. There are always projects and openings. I doubt the best companies would be the ones treating their employees the worst, they'd just have the heaviest work load. The guy most directly responsible for the look of the American productions at TMS still works at TMS. The guy is probably in his 70s, and he's still animating. That doesn't say "sweatshop" to me.
>>147059276NOA? That's Nintendo.
>>147030897>This has to be the strangest fucking writing decision in a /co/ TV series in a long timeIt really, really isn't. You guy are way too hung up on the relations of animated anthropomorphic animals for children.
>>147056292You're only as good as your last ones. Road Rovers flopped, Pinky and the Brain and Elmyra flopped (doesn't matter that it was "what the network wants, why bother to complain"), Histeria wasn't as popular as they were hoping. He wasn't worth the investment anymore.
>>147060428Yea, Nintendo of America, which has a reputation of making some extremely stupid and nonsensical decisions over the years. From their weird censorship of religious stuff to just making shit up on a whim instead of providing accurate translations despite being part of the same goddamn company that should have the best means of acquiring pinpoint accurate info on the games they're localizing.
>>147060604Pinky and the Brain with Elmyra is the kind of thing where it would be a funny one-off episode but they decided to drive the joke into the ground by trying to make an entire show out of it. "Show A is in declide and show B is just reruns and has been teetering on irrelevance for years, so let's combine the two which will surely make both IPs valuable." That shit never works.
>>147030924It was still a mistake to make them relatives considering they kept all of the original chemistry they had as only classmates in the show. And someone forgot that cousin marriage used to be a relatively common thing
>>147060796Didn't help it was just a weird combination, an Animaniacs bit fused with a minor character from Tiny Toons. It would be like if Histeria crossed over with Road Rovers, or Freakazoid showing up in the DCAU entirely the same while also trying to make Batman or Superman act the same despite their more "grounded" universe. Like you said, a one-off might have been hunky dory, and instead they ran that thing into the ground like a plane in a field.
>>147060847I mean, they weren't outright flirting in the original series, but you're not wrong that they did have some moments that felt almost like ship tease material. Them being cousins was certainly a flimsy decision when they could have just made them brother and sister to avoid all the weirdness.
>>147060853Not to mention that the point of Elmyra's character was that she was supposed to be super annoying. Pinky and Brain's dynamic worked because Brain was extremely serious and Pinky was the decidedly unserious goofball and nitwit. Putting them in a show with Elmyra basically had the effect of Brain having to deal with two Pinkies in every episode.
>>147060876That and Elmyra tended to KILL her pets, albeit out of ignorance of her overbearing nature. While Pink and Brain were pretty durable, given their original show, it in a way defeated part of the joke that made Elmyra. Granted, it was a pretty weak joke to begin with, and probably why she didn't have as many segments as others, and of course just doubling the annoyances for Brain like you said.I think the only joke I ever laughed at as Brain shining a flashlight on a wall and telling her it was a portal to a world full of cute animals she could love and care for.

Why do you think sweatshops = higher quality?Because if something is extremely well animated it's either 1) some autist with infinite time doing it as a passion project or 2) a talented team working around the clock for a company. And companies never pay well. Every single time I've seen a visually impressive animation, a year or two later you hear about the abominable work conditions they were put through. Also I imagine the quality of life was way worse in the 80s. If shit's bad now it was probably way worse without shit getting called out on social media, the animation expose shit and governing bodies regulating work hours and shit. Back then they'd stick 30 guys in a sweatshop with no AC and everyone smoking and tell them to crack out 40 episodes of captain planet or some shit.>Japan makes a ton of animation, especially at that time period. If you think 80s anime production wasn't the same I have a bridge to sell you. Anime was built on that shit. Look into why Toei fucking exists. Surprise it was because they wanted to pay people less. See >>147030977
>>147063788Not that anon, but I could at least understand why they might want to remove the examples from more extreme fanservice trope pages - that at least makes sense if you're concerned about standards dropping because people think the site is there as a wanking laundry list. I don't like it because it's undoing the work of the site and probably nothing to worry about but at least it's within reason with regards to the site's mission statement. But this is plain dumb. What the fuck is remotely sexual about Hartman Hips???
>>147065226man i hate ducks
>>147065351Based on their discussion, they thought the trope was confusing, and since Hartman's controversial, they didn't care for the idea of a trope being named after him, so they cut it. That said, while it's understandable they don't wanna be a wank site, the efforts they go through to police sexual content goes far beyond that. When they started doing clean-up after the Google incident, it was honestly needed. A lot of pages and tropes had been overrun by horny autists, and while they did panic and nuke everything for a bit (seriously, they deleted something as big as Fate Stay Night because of it's sex scenes), things more or less went back to normal. But as time went on, and less serious work was needed, pearl-clutching admins got more overzealous, guidelines became more restrictive and arbitrary, and editors all too eager to vote out or censor pages to the bones swarmed in, and it's been like that since. The community's much too "moral" and "upstanding" to relax now.

>>147066931On the topic of “being eaten”, whenever you see that in Looney Tunes with Sylvester & Tweety or Furball & Sweetie, it’s because the point is to show how scary it would be to be in the bird’s position. How that manifests as “I want animals to eat me” is a mystery for the ages.
