I love pulp sci-fi. Mars Attacks, the original trading cards were extremely influential on the genre and how it is viewed today. So i'm going to story time them because I love the art style so much.

Kind of crazy to think back in the day people would buy packs of cards just to get little pits of plot on them. Though I guess that isn't so different than the kids who collect pokemon cards today.

I like the little promo pics on the back since that meant you still had an idea of what was next even if you didn't get that specific card in that pack.

Sure, you'd want the card to see the entire image and get the flavor text on the back but you wouldn't completely lose out by not having it.

According to current canon as of 2024 it's to make human zoos. Here
https://youtu.be/_Liv5mcLRRc?si=Vl4CMvwNIoPK65oq

But originally it's just because monsters stealing and fucking women was a trope back then and apparently boomers jerked off to the idea. You can't have a single pulp sci Fi story without monster stealing woman

It's logical. In every war in history going back to ancient times cave men would kill the men and steal the women. It's why Russians today look slightly Mongolian. It's ingrained into our brains that an enemy will kill you and steal your beauties so it's a motivation to fight back.

The “humans invading Martians” thing is clearly defending US action in foreign countries. The fear of being invaded or of Pearl Harbor happening again, but now on a larger scale. Still, I think the criticism of what is a fun gum wrapper is exaggerated. Although the movie in all its anti-gulf war sentiment turns out not to be so wrong, given the later larger scale Iraq invasion

Because it's a simple plot and fun premise.

>Aliens invade earth

>Aliens beat our ass

>Humans learn to fight back

>Humans beat their ass

Basically the same appeal of the Imperium in Warhammer to some people, Halo, etc. Except with cartoony ultraviolence and fun crossover potential. Judge Dredd one was my favorite since it acknowledges the fact that earth in Judge Dredd could probably hold its own against Mars because of all the wars and advanced tech, so Mars had to destabilize it first.

They kind of skip over that part desu. They just kill bugs then fly to mars. My guess is that the initial attack was all done by a small number of Martians and the main force was always planned to be the bugs so when the bugs were finally getting beaten back the Martians who were far fewer in number began losing after the initial strike.

It's really interesting how the 'bugs' have typically incorrect-but-fine-because-pulp anatomy, yet so many of them have ocelli which even today artists forget about.

Hey guys OP here. I was hoping to quickly find a scan of Mars Attack The Revenge to storytime. Sadly the only scans easily available online are of shit quality.

So I had an idea. If you go to Ebay you can find good quality scans for the people listing the cards for sale. I can individually download every image (finding both front and back) and compile them into a folder. The issue is, this would take a few hours to do and since I have a ton of work this week I will have to wait until the weekend to do it. If anyone can think of an easier way to get decent scans let me know!

>Didn't all the Martians died on Mars?
In Mars Attacks The Revenge a bunch survived in space, and they searched for another planet that was like Mars. They eventually found one. The surviving Martians then seek revenge, but their second invasion fails. Mars Attack Occupation is an alternate universe exploring what Earth would be like if it was occupied by Mars. Think of it like 1984 by George Orwell.

My biggest issue with the original card series is that it fails to explain HOW the humans beat back the Martians in order to launch their counter offensive and instead focused on bugs for some reason. This actually explains it and should have been in. Using greater numbers of jets and ammo America was able to bomb the less aerodynamic and slower machines from the air. It also stands to reason that the humans greatly outnumber the Martians as well so attrition would have eventually began favoring earth.
>>
>>147147715

Not going to continue with the sequel series?
>>
The coloring on these are just gorgeous, thanks OP. Interesting to think a trading card series of all things had such a big influence

Yes I am but rn too busy with work. The first sequel Mars Attacks Revenge is not available online in high quality (at least I haven't been able to find it) so I'm going to have to download ebay scans individually and sort them

My biggest issue is half way through it, it became "Attack of the giant bugs" instead of Mars Attacks.

Great stuff, OP. As an enjoyed of 50s B-Movies, Mars Attacks has always been a treat.
Though I have trouble enjoying the movie.
By the way, anyone who loves this stuff should 100% check out the Earth Defense Force video games if they haven’t already. It’s basically like playing a foot soldier during the Martian attack, complete with giant insects, robots and saucers.

I've played a bit of them, good fun. What's your hangup with the movie out of interest? Too much Tom Jones?
>>
>>147157920
The way the heat ray works in the movie is so horrifying to me that it takes all the fun out of it. Like, I just imagine myself getting hit and having to watch as my skin slowly burns off until it reaches my head. The fact it’s slow enough that you can watch it happens is nightmare fuel. If it was just a quick disintegration/skeletoniziation, I would be fine.

I haven't played those games in years, which part was that?

I recommend playing Destroy All Humans just for being able to play as the alien.
>>
>>147158536
I was wrong it was that Rubix Raptor guy who shouts a lot, but it was funny watching their Rssistance: Fall Of Man Arma 3 op where the pilots refused to give up despite being set up to lose.

Neither of those sold particularly well, so there aren't a ton of direct comparisons, but throughout the years there have been a number of narrative-driven nonsports trading card sets with incredible imagery. I'm collecting the 1938 Gum, Inc. Horrors of War set, about the events leading up to WWII. Here's the most famous card, #240 The Frightful Cost of War

Some other classics include 1962 Topps Civil War News and 1951 Bowman Red Menace:

There's a fair number of other sets listed there on TCDB. If you want to look around yourself, go here and look between approximately 1950-1990 for more. They'd be in "Fantasy" "Oddball" "Comics" or "Historical"

The back. I also like 1951 Bowman Jets Rockets Spacemen, kinda a Flash Gordon space opera thing.

Shit, man, I was in the same boat. Too much imagination spoils the fun. Such a wacky movie, though.

I like they didn't even need to decimate Mars since they knew it was going to blow up anyway. It has the pettyness of James Bond saving a villaim from death just to kill him himself from one of the 90s movies.
>>
>>147135160
I like the 3th game where he comes back with the aliens and destroy Silent Hill.
>>
>>147146398
Can't you just donwlad the page?
>>
>>147165757
I see them as tangentially related. Mars Attacks riffs big time on the 1950s era invasion movies, so they also added in the giant insect flicks too (which sometimes were enhanced by aliens or other crap from space).
