There's also a few bits where he he basically did the smiling-mask-over-crying-wojak thing when he tried to get local kings to convert or to take down their idols and when he got told to fuck off, he justified it as "No see I LET them get away with not converting!!11!". And as I alluded to, he was really being manipulated and used by Xicotencatl II, Ixtlilxochitl II, Xicomecoatl, and even Moctezuma II as much as he was using them. At the same time, he's probably the definition of a madlad, and managed to survive and still get more opportunities in life despite all of those other failed expeditions and obviously all of the challenges and battles in his famous 1519 one. People present it as a small band of Conquistadors taking down an empire, which is inaccurate not just because there were hundreds of thousands of local allied forces and it was pretty much just toppling the capital, but also because there were actually multiple waves of Spanish reinforcements and if you look at all ~3000 conquistadors across those, the vast majority ended up dying. That Cortes didn't despite all of the very bad situations he found himself in, again, says a lot: He was clearly amazing at weaseling himself out of and making the most out of bad situations. Even if that expedition succeeded in large part due to luck (it's hard to overstate just how many crazy happenstance stuff allowed it to happen), other men probably wouldn't have been able to ride the chaos the way he did. But keep in mind I know way more about the Mesoamerican side of things then the Spanish side of things. 5/?
