I was just thinking about it but the professor is probably the most underappreciated character in the film. Not only is she an incredibly competent biologist, she managed to do neuroscience and robotics with the resources of a small university as a side project. If she was even slightly more cynical, she could be making billions at this point. Her getting let go at the end of the movie was a big L for Beaverton U, that's letting a billion dollar asset go out the door.
Having watched the movie and seen some Craig of the Creek, Mabel and Wildernessa would at least be friends.

That's what makes it fun though, we're essentially watching an anti-hero where the movie knows she's one and yes, by the end she does become better, but for a while she's just a rash dumb girl, but it is funny because the movie doesn't pretend she isn't. I don't know, I feel like in other movies, despite the character flaws, you're always supposed to see the main character as super sympathetic, even if they fucked up, but here the movie isn't really sympathetic to her until she decides to do the right thing in the third act. Which is what separates her from other annoying characters. We see her fuck up, see the consequences of her actions and then they follow it up with a funny moment, which works great. I think what also helped is showing right away how utterly petty she is when it comes to arguing with Jerry (same with him arguing with her). It helped present both characters as funny idiots who aren't actually malicious and can be unlikable due to their pettiness, but the movie makes it clear that's the point and aren't empowering either.
