Back in the day, I never felt like I had to stick with one way to draw each character and it allowed me to experiment with different body types and races just for fun. Even now, I think it's fun to draw June but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop draw John, they can both exist at the same time for me. This artistic freedom is what made Homestuck fanart so great, in my opinion.

And homestuck as a story is partly about breaking out of the planned prepackaged storyline you were given. Its also a story that condemns power almost entirely. Lord english is evil because he is all powerful, and she is all powerful because he is evil. Gaining power comes at a direct tradeoff to humanity. Disagree with that philosophy if you will, i do, but thats how it is. It also questions the ideas of heroes and how valuable the concept is. Dirk is an example, he hero worships alpha dave so hard, tries to embody who he was, and fails and makes everything worse. Same with vriska really. Dave was meant from day one to be the legendary hero knight who slays english. But bros training basically scarred him for life and he is apathetic about the whole thing. He was apathetic of the world dying, he was apathetic about playing the game, so on and so forth. And i think this story line does work. Because dave ISNT the main character of homestuck, and he really isnt the hero. That's John. Dave was right and he always was. I am partially defending all this but i will acknowledge how raw Dave got fucked over in act 6 along with the rest of the beta kids, because they had to be dragged down to the same level of incompetent and stupid as the alpha kids. Dave not wanting to play by his script and be the hero isn't the same as him wanting to be complacent and useless. Which is what i have the problem with. Dave should have been sad about his role while actively subverting it through other means. Probably by the same way he did in the beta session, working in the background, getting the hard work done no one else wanted to do, a very humble sort of work that lets the whole team function.
