The whole nightmare defense thing was more of product of a force that want to kill "God" and their creations for Revenge (making them literal demons as opposed to Nightmares)

But I don't think there's any way to rid them of "their mind and soul" because based on the lore descriptions, those are just concepts they assumed since they couldn't interact with or rage against creation otherwise - emergent properties that nonexistence must take on because nothingness can't, well, DO anything to reality on its own.
