Previous thread
>>153584125
Last thread capped out, so here's a new one. Murderanon will be posting the 47 Ronin comic tomorrow, but that is the last Usagi Yojimbo/Stan Sakai storytime for this year. When a new Usagi Yojimbo or Kaito 84 chapters get released, we will post it on here. This year was fun as always, and I'm glad the newcomers enjoyed this wonderful comic. Until we meet again, Abayo*

The Art Of Usagi Yojimbo thread is still active and not at the bump limit.

How come Usagi can't qualify for Mr. /co/?

yeah op you pulled the trigger too soon. ah well, what's done is done. what did newcomers think of the comic? what did old timers think of the re-read? personally, as someone who wants to make his own comics, reading usagi always fuels me with a lot of "ooh, aah, I should do this, I should do that"
>>
Oh, is it over? I didn't see the final thread. Should I start TMNT tomorrow or wait until Monday?
>>
>>153593339
Wait until Monday, there's one thread left that's not counted but also mandatory- 47 Ronin, a whole separate comic that Stan Sakai did in the mid 2010s, always gets posted alongside after the Usagi storytime.
>>
There is a book with a similar premise to Senso, but set in medieval Europe. It's called "The High Crusade" by Poul Anderson. It's a lot more light hearted though.

This annuals are always the highlight of the year in this board, no flamewars just people enjoying the comicbooks they like. Something nice about reading Usagi every year is the little details you notice on repeating reading, the Stan-ism on how he draws and just seeing his artstyle evolve though the years.
>>
>>153595155
I would like to see it.

I'm pretty proud that my suggestion was taken up as this year's count

Re-reader here (I think this is my third or fourth storytime).

Very good stuff, towards the end I had IRL stuff come up more so I couldn't contribute as much as normal but it was great to go through it again. Bridge of Tears remains my favourite volume though I actually really liked Grasscutter 1 a lot this time around because of how incredible the scale was. I think as you go through it again more the topography of Usagi's adventures becomes more and more clear, though that comes with the drawbacks of "oh no the good stories are starting to fall away" once you get to a certain point.

One story I was thinking about the other day is how good the Revenge story (the one with the revenge headband guy) was, I like the characters that show up for one or two stories. That one is great and I felt like Yukichi clicked a lot more in the story which had a similar thing where the guy who became a bounty hunter showed up again. If you had to introduce the revenge guy or the bounter hunter guy in the same story the twist would become obvious but having them introduced in an isolated way beforehand is much better.

I know we bash Kitsune a lot on this board but I think the character who *bothered* me the most this go-around is Stray Dog, it's not just that I don't particularly find him interesting it's that because him and Gen have so many stories together you basically don't get Gen and Usagi stories after a while, they're all frontloaded into the first half of the comic. I think another character I would like to show up more often in the later half is Priest Sanshobo, who is a great character and key in a lot of good stories and then sort of vanishes after a certain point (I think the Jei/Inazuma resolution?).
>>
>>153595477
These threads have been the most civilized I've ever seen. Sure there's been arguments and discourse here and there, but everyone rallies around that Meddlesome Rabbit.
>>
>>153595541
My only complaint with Kitsune is that her stories feel repetitive after a while. The only major difference is that another one of Usagi's friends come in and get introduced to her pickpocketing gimmick like Chizu or Ishida.

We never got a beach episode. Now that I think about it, why has Usagi never gone south to the not so Japanese islands? Is chambara exclusively about certain regions of Japan?
>>
>>153595684
We did, he went to the seaweed collecting people. In fact I'm pretty sure it's pissing off a seaweed merchant that got Usagi on the bad side of the Koroishi.

Her becoming a writer's pet who can never lose no matter how recklessly stupid she is wasn't a problem for you?

I liked Kitsune better when she was a street performer who stole by the side because when people don't pay enough to buy a meal "A girl has to do what she can to get by" and in the parade of misery of feudal japan that is fair, I think that is a fine enough character. But she isn't that she is a career burglar who often steals absurd sums on money in every caper and still keeps doing it again and again

In fiction the thief is a love archetype, the lovable rogue who the hero always encounters in the middle of some trouble, but Kitsune lacks all the things that make a Rogue lovable. She isn't that self reliant since often is Usagi who has to kill in her behalf, she isn't particularly competent or clever as she often gets in trouble she can't get away from, her only saving grace is taking care of Kyoko but even there is kind of messed up since she uses her to steal and is not like she even protects her since Kyoko can kick more ass that she can.

But what I think makes her stories insufferable is that she never gets the short end of the stick she always get away with everything she does and often is not even her being infuriating but the lawful good Usagi loosing all his neurons when she is around and suddenly bending backwards to make sure nothing happens to her.

Gen is an asshole character done right, he can act selfish or overly opportunistic but he also has a sense of honor, he sometimes gets the short end of the stick in his stories and more importantly Usagi call his shit when he gets out of place there is a dynamic there which makes his stories less repetitive.
>>
>>153595541
I guess it's not hard to argue that Stray Dog's wad has been shot in the reveal that he's a thug on the streets so he can support that orphanage. Why appear a second time after that? This central contrast doesn't develop an inch from there.

If Usagi was found out that both Mariko and Tomoe were widows at the same time, which one would he pursue. We already know he'd go for Tomoe if she was available after many years but what if Mariko was as well?

Wasnt polygamy tolerated at the time?
>>
>>153598285
Sure, but you could only have one wife. Others had to be mistresses.
Also, take into account the fact that Usagi is a broke as fuck wandering mendicant ronin, so he can't exactly afford the upkeep of his wife and concubine(s).
Unless he and his wife + concubines become a wandering troupe that he pimps out for money...

Mariko, no question. Usagi has horrible fucking taste at the end of the day and Stan loves forcing this pairing as we see with Senso and Kaito. Sadly Usagi only really goes for Tomoe because Mariko usually isn't an option.

i was like that with stray dog upon rereading his first story this time but his adventures with gen have lightened him up in my eyes again
I think it's Usagi holding water for him with the "uh gee idk maybe he's not all that bad" after he betrays them at the end of the General Fujii story is very stupid and kitsune-like which hits him hard, alongside his general concept of doing shitty things for personal reason making him similar to kitsune
I'm surprised there hasn't been a story with Gen learning about the orphanage.

Also unrelated but fuck i wish Sakura showed up even once more, she was cool.

It's a comic that Stan was doing even before Usagi, and which then got relegated to an occasional backup feature in the UY comic book. But originally, Usagi was meant to be a side character in the grand epic quest Stan had intended to build up to in the Nilson comic. The entire comic was released in a hardcover by Dark Horse and its foreword by Stan explains this in more detail.

I still think steampunk mecha Usagi was a bridge too far into silliness. I would have preferred the disease ending from the HG Wells novel, or something more like the way League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen handled it.

I do think it does tip a bit too hard into nonsense, yes. Wherewhen ends up being way more important than I remember it being because without the justification of "oh actually the technology just got to have a massive jump because of this time travelling TMNT villain" Senso just feels absolutely nonsensical

Proofs. Pretty impressive for a minor character who dies but maybe not because she never got death bubbled and the strike was plausibly survivable in her short story arc to be in the same league as the main girls.
>>
>>153608750
She was a sweet girl with attitude and despite not being very smart or strong, she was brave and loyal. Mayumi brought no burdens into their short relationship, no duty to a clan, lord or another man. She only brought love and care. And she remained loyal even after Usagi had seemingly ditched her. She died saving the man she loved, knowing that her faith in him was not misplaced. Because he did come back for her and that was enough to make her happy.
What a wonderful, tragic and beautiful short love story.

Tomoe: Texas ranger/State trooper

Stray dog: Bounty hunter
Kitsune: Traveling snake oil salesman/conman/card shark

Like attacking other tribes that are on the way of the latest railway line, or getting rid of prospectors/rivals who try to set up on lands Mister Hikiji finds profitable and wants to expand his business empire on.
Sasuke: Could be just himself, being sent by lord Shoki to the distant east over the oceans to hunt some yokai that made the crossing. On the other hand, if you want to keep it more western style, he could also be a medieval witch hunter, turned monster hunter.
Sakura: Traveling gambler who fights criminal groups where ever she runs into them

Space Usagi did a great job of shuffling the supporting cast, and upon reflection I think anon's right to criticize Kaito '84 for being too memberberries with the gang (although Kaito '84 is planned out in advance and they know they only have 5 issues to get it all out so maybe that was a consideration too). I like how in Space Usagi we got a Katsuichi that was an evil scheming usurper, but also recognizably the "wise old sensei hermit" too. Ever since one of the early storytimes this year where an anon mentioned how Lone Goat & Kid could be recycled for a Wild West setting, I've been toying with an idea in my head about a way to slot in General Ikeda into Far West Usagi too, but in a "similar but different" way.

>El General "Tarantula" Delestanque*
>sent by the President of La Nova Sur Republica** with special orders to capture preferably alive the Lone Goat and tie up the last loose end to El Presidente's seedy past
>El Presidente has made it clear that Delestanque is not to return home without having completed his mission, unless some horrible accident should befall his wife and son in their estate outside the capital.
>Delestanque served with his old comrade during the revolution and is hesitant to bring him in, not least because his secret mission is an illegal cross-border operation, but Delestanque himself has plans to counter-coup El Presidente as well
>El General and a small band of hand-picked loyal and elite sicarios now roam the frontier, tracking the Lone Goat, but biding their time and shoring up their own resources as well, as their leader plays the long game with the patience of a spider.

*Ikeda roughly translates to 'field of ponds' (paddy, basically). Delestanque ("of the pond") sounds vaguely similar in meaning to my non-native Spanish speaker ears.
**Mexico, but following Stan's tradition of not definitively naming foreign countries ("Land of Dragons, Land of Tigers")

Japan didn't really have a concept of marriage or of monogamy. What it did have was the concept of "the woman's father will get her male relatives together and beat your ass if you're perceived as mistreating her". And withholding money and resources expected to be given to her and your children by her as the woman they entrusted to you is a big fucking deal. Having mistresses and illegitimate children was tolerated, to an extent, but to openly say "your daughter/sister bores me, I'm replacing her with someone else, but she's also not allowed to leave me" is a massive insult. The only men in Japan who had out and out multiple wives were generally the very tip top rulers of the country where the status gap was so huge and his resources so vast that nobody could ever really argue that taking a second or third wife was "mistreating" the first.

Thisbis assuming we're talking about Kamakura shogunate and onwards, though. Pre-Neo-Confucian Japan was shockingly progressive for a neighbor of China. While men and women couldn't really freely associate, they had a courtship system similar to 20th century dating, where a young man would just ask the girl's father for permission to see her, after which point he was pretty much free to show up to her home and be alone with her. There are tons of relatively raunchy poems in the Kokin Wakashū about young women meeting with their lovers while their fathers basically gave the guy a pat on the back. Instead of marriage, the woman would just decide "I like him enough" and agree to live with him instead of her father. The man would give her father an agreeable amount of money in case he died or they separated to care for her or any children, and then she would live with him as long as she wanted. If they didn't want to be together anymore, she'd just move back home with her father and that was that. Much different from Neo-Confucianism and "women are property" enforced by the shogunate in an attempt to larp as China.

Osage is really oh-sayj so it's for the visual pun

Jimbo or Jinbo is a Japanese family name so maybe a maternal line one if a Miyamoto descendant

But Jimbo as nickname for James is one he exploits

Given name is Yohei, Yo for short, sounds like You, hey

>Japan didn't really have a concept of marriage or of monogamy
>proceeds to describe marriage and monogamy
Or are you talking about concubinage?
Also consider that Chizu doesnt really have a family and we never see Tomoe's brother outside of flashbacks
>>
>>153612999
>Japan didn't really have a concept of marriage or of monogamy.
That's not true in the slightest. The Nihon Shoki and Kojiki, which we saw a bit of in the Grasscutter arcs, talk about Susanoo taking a wife. The prologue to Grasscutter 2: Yamato-dake Boogaloo, started off with a wedding ceremony.

Marriage did not exist in Japan. It's a foreign and ahistoric concept.
>>
>>153612078
Putting the gun in Shogun.
>>
>>153613357
Yes it did. Once again, the oldest books written by the Japanese themselves talking about their oldest myths and legends include marriage ceremonies and husband/wife relationships.
>>
>>153613276
It's more a lack of a social binding ceremony or institution of marriage. You would ask a woman to live with you and her father/brother would agree or disagree. It's why free association between men and women was limited. "Marriage" was just "this lady lives in my house and says she likes me". Men had to be constantly suspicious of other men around women, because letting some guy near your unmarried sister meant he might dump you with the resulting kid and its expenses, as well as make your sister totally unappealing for marriage.
>>
>>153613406
Yes. They had "man that lives together with woman and has children" relationships. But it wasn't the western concept of a marriage. They did not have a "Japanese wedding" and throw rice at them. It was a complex oral agreement between families that varied from something similar to modern cohabitation to "the woman is property" and should not be reduced to "they had marriage" because that implies a lot of things that just aren't true.
>>
>>153610814

Yeah and you know what else isn't true and a blanket statement? "The Japanese did not have marriage and it is totally ahistorical and foreign to Japanese culture."

From the same essay:
>...it seems to have been not at all unusual for a father to bequeath his entire estate to a daughter (in the Heian period) even though he also had sons whom one might have expecfed to share in his inheritance. Fujiwara Tamemitsu, for instance, had two sons living at the time of his death, but it is reported in Eiga monogatari that he left his elaborate Ichijo house and all his other property to his third daughter.

It made me think that Tomoe might have had better luck had she been born in the Heian rather than Edo period. But then reading even further down in the essay:
>...Nakayori's mother-in-law (states) in the Utsubo monogatari: 'No matter how beautiful a girl is and no matter how refined and charming, if the man discovers her living a miserable life in some wretched, desolate hut, he will think 'How squalid! What a trial it would be to live there!" And he will never go near her.""

And you just know our little Tomoe Nogame would have lived in an absolute fujoshi neetcave.

original anon you replied to here, and I dont mean any hostility but youve done nothing but describe marriage and declare it to not be marriage.
Going by your logic, the Islamic world did not have marriage because they had an oral agreement where a man would ask a woman if she wanted to live with him and the father/male relatives would also have to agree and the man would pay money to them, and if they didnt want to be together the woman would just leave and return his money to him

Kinda, she wields a ridiculous amount of influence over Noriyuki. Itd be more realistic if she was a relative or in-law or something like that, but she has 0 familial connection to him.
I feel like she wasnt always so prominent in the Geishu hierarchy in the earlier half UY, its just that Stan neglected to introduce any other Geishu retainers beyond that one traitor in the story where they meet Ikeda, and Tomoe just slowly became more and more prominent. And then he backtracked and made Horikawa as a counterweight

I have always thought that Noriyuki was alone with no aunts/uncles/cousins due to ninjas/traitors actions.
So killing him is like destroying and erasing his bloodline with no Shogun issues (expect the actions about his lands)

However, everyone know that actual Noriyuki is number 38.

Wait a minute. In Senso, there are no panda wives/cubs; and Noriyuki should be older than Jotaro and maybe Motokazu too...

By the Edo period, polygamy, defined as a man having more than one WIFE, was not allowed to anyone. A man could have multiple CONCUBINES but only one legal wife. If a concubine bore him a son but his legal wife did not, that son could be designated his heir, but if and when his legal wife did bear a son, then his son from his concubine would lose the legal right to claim his succession. And as we know, everyone was dead ass broke all the time on purpose because the Tokugawa demanded it so, so keeping more than one woman around and their kids was nearly impossible anyways, which is why you had a lot of samurai families adopting when they didn't have any male heirs.

REALM DIVIDE as everyone remotely related to the Geishu lord starts coalescing their own power bases, and even some upstarts like Ikeda's clan might make a grab for power. At least, in the bad old days of the Sengoku Jidai this would happen. I imagine in the time Usagi's set in, the shogunate would step in to arbitrate a smooth transition of power to a Geishu cousin or something. If there are absolutely no Geishu left whatsoever, then the shogunate might raise up one of the Geishu vassals to take over managing the domain, or they might decide to reward it to one of their cadet branches.
Mind you I don't have any sources to cite for this info, I'm going off of general understanding of the time period. Vibeposting, if you will.

I don't entirely blame him. The state of affairs where a random female retainer is basically running the clan through her surrogate mother role to Noriyuki is going to make the clan a laughing stock if it's allowed to go on. People who don't know Tomoe's unique history and abilities will see her peculiar relationship with Noriyuki and just assume is weak, and the plots and schemes will proliferate until one finally kills him and destroys the clan. In fact that is already kind of what has been happening. Plus, plotting to marry her off is actually a remarkably humane and low stakes scheme by Feudal Japan standards. And if Horikawa is also being a little ambitious and hoping to slide into Tomoe's current position once she's out of the way... well, a vassal daimyo has to do what he can to get by.
>>
>>153613696
>It made me think that Tomoe might have had better luck had she been born in the Heian rather than Edo period.

Women's rights in Japan took a pretty big hit in general during the Edo period from what I understand with a lot of things like "A female warrior is unsightly" being 'longstanding traditions handed down through the countless generations' that started like two, three decades earlier at max.
>>
>>153618814
>In fact that is already kind of what has been happening.
Disagree. It's not like Hikiji wouldn't have tried any of his shit if Tomoe hadn't existed. All that shit's happening because the Geishus are a powerful clan, staunch shogunate loyalists, and ruled by a little kid with no obvious heirs.

>Cmon now whats sci-fi without a space wizard?

The cyberpunk version should be some sort of genetic engineered creature designed to be the next step in human evolution. For instance, they sent a probe to Europa, it took some biological samples, and brought them back. They added them to a test subject and he's now a Jovian Enhanced Individual.

Ryoko is the scientist that created JEI.
>>
>>153620125
This is a good idea, t b h. And of course what it means for an individual to be Jovian-Enhanced is that he's been invaded by a Thinglike black sludge.

(The muttering about exterminating evil is presumably a bad translation of the creature's ideas about needing to cleanse and terraform Earth's biosphere to be more welcoming to Europan life forms)
>>
>>153620125

Also, since I just now thought of it, Ryoko has twin daughters (and/or clones) that JEI responds well to since she implanted memories of her as his mother that must be obeyed; he sees Keiko and Chiyoko as his Big Sisters.

She's also got a seedy past and occassionally she'll go in disguise to just steal like a street thief because she has legitimate psychological kleptomania, and her corporation is constantly in the press for its shady business practices, which are still kind of tame by cyberpunk standards, but still the noodles keep selling because they're so cheap and they have such dominant market presence.

>Hey Sasuke. Don't crap your hakama if you see a yokai out there.
>Get lost. You wouldn't recognize a kami damned yokai if one jumped up and bit you on the end of your fucking chinpo. So just get off my back.

For that one discussion about how you sometimes see this pose in jidaigeki/how Mifune did it in Yojimbo/Sanjuro, I found an example from 1963's "Sennin Buraku".

They really aren't the same, a little more exposure and you'll get a sense for the differences. Like westerns ( a common comparison), there's room for a lot of variation in the wandering samurai on a revenge trip setup. As for why he's a rabbit, it was the style at the time.

Don't you see. The assassination attempts that were going on since he was born will cease once we marry off the one person who's been there to fend them off! You know. Because he'll be dead.

Got anymore fan lore for the other cyberpunk version of the cast?

>why is he a rabbit?
because the author drew a funny rabbit samurai with his ears tied up like a topknot and it stemmed from there.

I was looking through the Usagi RPG rule book and saw this. I seem to recall some anons were trying to figure out exactly where the Geishu and Hikiji lands were and whether Hikiji was based on Date Masumune, and this comes straight from Stan's mouth.

I was wondering, are anons interested in the pen & paper RPG? I was thinking of making a modern one since it's so outdated and doesn't fit with what Usagi Yojimbo has evolved into. Things like playable snakes as a standard race, teppo as standard equipment, pronounced animal traits/stereotypes, etc.

Maybe five years ago or so, I don't even have the time to go to the games I used to.

Are you looking through the original 80s one or the later 2005 one?

I don't know if you're aware, but there was a newer one in 2022. Based on the PbtA engine, which some people have problems with.

The 1997 Gold Rush one, didn't know there was another different one. I'll check it out.

Did you check out the second RPG?

For me though, the first one is unparalleled kino. The combat cards, great stuff.
