Question for the thread:When people talk about Diptyque fragrances on here (Tam Dao, Philosykos, etc.) do you guys refer to the EdT versions or the EdP versions?E.g. when people talk about Lalique Lion, apparently everyone is talking about the EdP because it’s actually the same scent just with better performance.

What are some other nice discovery sets (which are relatively cheap)? Was thinking of Tauer. On a different note, I have been looking around for a cold/wet weather fragrance and I am captivated by the descriptions of Caron Yatagan. I feel inclined to blind buy it, which might be a stupid idea. Thoughts?Final question: anybody have experience with L'orchestre Parfum fragrances? >"light, airy, dry, hmmmm, undoubtedly French"
Is watching "weekly rotation" videos a sign that you've hit rock bottom?
>>18178340Reposting something I wrote up 5-6 threads back with slight modifications to make it more general. Discovery sets are your friend. Low volume, wide variety (depending on the house), and cheap if the sample number isn’t huge. If you’re looking to get into this as a hobby, buy them just for the experience. Mind you it’s an expensive and socially ostracized hobby. Also, it’s the hardest rule to learn and you probably won’t learn it until it’s too late, but never buy a full bottle of something until you’ve drained a smaller decant of it, preferably at least 10 mL. As far as sample sets go, you’ll find most of them (most houses in general) are 1-2 big names from the house, a bulk of mediocre fragrances, and 1-3 hard misses they keep for posterity or something. As far as good discovery sets, Nicolai is decent, perfect example where it has New York Intense, arguably her biggest frag, and a bunch of extremely mid stuff.Rogue Perfumery is similar, big hits with Mousse Illuminee and Bon Monsieur, a few mids, 1-2 low tier stuff.Etat Libre d’Orange is a great cheap set to pickup with a huge variety, more misses but essential for the experience. Essential Parfums’ discovery set is the epitome of a dirt cheap set with a decent range. If you’re willing to drop a little more money Zoologist has a really good variety of frags, but they’re very hit or miss. If you’re going to get them, only get the full set, never just a portion. Pineward is even more narrow in scope (woods/earth), but has some unique fragrances you won’t find anywhere else. Beaufort London is another good house if you’re into darker, smokier type frags. Tauer also has many great works but they only come broken up into smaller batches, all three are worth getting though. Last, and most importantly: Ignore the idiotic war waged between designer and niche tards. Both have their merits, both have a place, to forsake one is to deprive yourself.

>>18179522Always Montale when they are an option
>>18179526I thought /frag/ hated montaleHave you tried either of these ones? Got any opinions of them?
>>18179522depends on what you want, they are not really comparable imo. full incense is if you want straight up church incense but with screechy montale dna, while rien is much more complex and smells like a vintage leather chypre at times, way more interesting but it's much more than incense so probably not the best choice if you're looking for pure incense fragrance.
>>18179596>full incense is if you want straight up church incenseIs it really? Because that's more or less what I want, and that's exactly what I've heard for some other frags, none of which has ever managed to come even close to deliver that >while rien is much more complex and smells like a vintage leather chypre at timesIs it any similar to black incense malaki?
>>18179624Smell Beaufort's Terror and Magnificence, and House of Matriarch's Devotion. Both are photorealistic incense frags.
>>18179649>House of Matriarch's DevotionThanks I'll look into that one.I have T&M and I would really like to love that one because, yeah, that's the most realistic incense I've smelled so far but there's this wetness to it that very quickly devolves into some semi-incensey, semi-spa aromatheraphy kinda thing and I don't really dig that. Moreover, unlike the rest of the house's frags, this one feels so flat and one-dimensional it's almost surreal. It also doesn't help that the performance is absolute dogshit. I'm genuinely disappointed with it because if it did have some more of that Beaufort special gene, with that harsher and more pronounced smokiness, it probably would've been the single greatest frag out there but alas..
>>18179658Hate to hear about your experience with T&M, mine borders on too strong, so I wonder if it's a batch issue (mines from 2023 so not older at all). HoM has some good stuff, but they're pricy. Usually there's a coupon promotion they run, so wait till a holiday or something. Devotion has a slightly green botanical top note before the incense kicks in, so be a little patient with it.

>>18180478I’m seriously starting to believe that most people aren’t able to distinguish sandalwood from saffron with their noses, they just check out note lists or videos before actually trying fragrances themselves and then smell exactly what others said. Basically, so vulnerable to suggestion that you can call an amber fragrance aquatic to them and they believe it because the name sounds like it, it comes in a blue bottle, and the manufacturer blurts out some marketing buzzwords about yachts.I had to do a double take and check out whether I had sprayed it from the right bottle after sniffing it for the first time, because it sure as fuck didn’t resemble what people usually say about it. It’s so close to Ambre Nuit, yet nobody has ever called Ambre Nuit an aquatic, because it fucking isn’t one, as neither is 40 Knots.
is anything by english laundry any good or is it pajeet tier?
>>18180367First let it be said that fragrance “age appropriateness” is all marketing and preconceived notions, just like sex, day/night, and weather/season. That being recognized and if you buy into it, there’s really only two buckets of age groups, maybe three if you wanna get really finicky. Young and Mature, (with “old man” being a kind of third). It’s all very relative to the person and situation but most people STOP being fragrance “young” around 25-29 because generally speaking you’re an adult by that point and working a steady professional job. You’re late 20’s and in a (very) serious professional environment, you’re mature man, it don’t matter anymore. Here’s the rub though, even with Bianchi’s being mature fragrances, they’re all WAY too loud for an office or any kind of indoor setting. Most of them, including EW, are loud like Sauvage Elixir or Bois Imperial. Get some Terre d’Hermes, good intro mature fragrance. Eau Givree if you want it a touch lighter.
is tommy bahama st barts any good? they have 4 bottles at marshalls. I bought st kitts a couple of months ago and I like that.
>why yes, i want to smell like fresh green pine
>>18180496I honestly find it funny when people around their 30s worry about being ”too mature”, especially funny if it is some career that has inherently strict and serious atmosphere. You’re not young anymore at that point, you’re supposed to be able to project some kind ot professional aura at that point if your job demands it, and it only takes couple of years before hair starts thinning and you get mysterious joint pains with high likelihood.I’m not saying that people that age are old, but neither they’re exactly young by any sensible meter either. Somehow, it feels like modern culture makes people afraid to accept that they’re aging and they try to cling on to their 18-22y identity in a way that seems even desperate at times.

>*Sigh*Well, I finally finished testing about 9 different Guerlain frags (roughly half/half old-ish and new) and unfortunately I’m just not a fan. Heathen, I know, but the powdery Guerlinade just kills so many of their frags for me. Most of the old classics are too powdery in the dry down, and most of the more modern releases (Wasser) are just kinda blah. Not trash, but they just don’t wow me. Habit Rouge is too powdery in the dry down (otherwise fantastic), Vetiver just smells like vetiveryl acetate in the dry down (Encre Noire), even the Spiritueuse Double Vanille is just *super* boring, weak vanilla - I’d take Eau de Baux over it in a heartbeat. L’Instant de Guerlain pour Homme EdP was decent but felt too redundant in the dry down to ACDD to me (which I already own). Heritage EdP was nice, but again, powdery leather dry down. My fave was probably L’Homme Idéal Intense because the first ~2H were actually pretty complex and enjoyable, but the base of florals and vanilla don’t push it enough to be a purchase. I’m glad I tried a decent chunk of them but I’m a lot more indifferent to them now with the whole ‘luxury’ rebranding and false scarcity.

After trying 200+ fragrances, it honestly doesn't get better than this. Truly a masterpiece. The best Chanel fragrance ever produced
I want to boycott Dior and Chanel. What should I do?
>>18180796Your girlfriend should not give her opinion on things.
>>18180734>They average out to about ~$16 each, but the real thing holding me back is it’s 15 FULL BOTTLES. I don’t need that much shit, let alone even have room for it…maybe fragrance isn't a hobby for you then?

>>18180508>Somehow, it feels like modern culture makes people afraid to accept that they’re aging and they try to cling on to their 18-22y identity in a way that seems even desperate at times. There is a cult of youth nowadays. As far as mass culture is concerned when you reach 40 you might as well not exist anymore. So that's how you get middle aged guys being all "hi fellow kids", wearing Invictus and asking if TdH won't be "too mature" for them

Is it still worth buying French Lover nowadays or it the performance really that bad?
>>18180510Oooh what's Victoire like? Felt pretty decently priced for Nicolai
>>18181319Ok; what are some great cheap perfumes?
>>18181319That perfume is practically just a mix of cool water and green irish tweed. Hard to think of that as bad. Mediocre maybe.
>>18180906Seconding Baux. It’s cheap as fuck, and while it won’t have the drying fruits and cloves of TV, it makes for a much more wearable smoky vanilla fragrance. Tobacco Vanille IMO is one of those fragrances that feel great when you smell it as a short test, but it’s really hard to actually wear because it is so overpowering and thick, but Baux could easily work as a daily fragrance for colder seasons.
>>18181550I recently bought the Essential Parfums discovery set, which contains a sample of Divine Vanille. I really like the combo of incense and vanille (although before I looked at the notes, I thought it was tobacco instead of incense). Overall however, I sometimes felt the vanille was a tad too dominant, making it a bit of a one-dimensional scent. Would Baux be a good alternative for me? Or something like Zadig&Voltaire this is him?
>>18181423Worth it if you like it and don't mind spending over $200 for 50ml of fragrance.

Thoughts on Serge Lutens Bapteme Du Feu for a 40+ overweight office drone?
>>18181608Serge Lutens is trash, I wouldn't be caught wearing that outdated sh*t even if somebody paid me to do so.I enjoy the premium niche market, product that is very expensive. I understand /frag/ isn't huge on fragrances that are over $500 retail, but to me, those scents absolutely obliterate anything that can be had for $300, $200, much less sub $150. The lower you go in $, the smaller the probability that the scent lives up to market leaders.
>>18181595Where do you buy your Caron fragrances? The prices listed on their website aren't exactly what I would call cheap.
>>18181476random shit under $100 that i have in my perfume cabinet: cool water, cabochard, 4711, brut, azzaro pour homme, drakkar noir, zino, paco rabanne pour homme, grey flannel, bijan men, thé brun. i’m sure there’s plenty more but i’m too lazy to find stuff that i don’t see right in front of me. >>18181505then literally just buy cool water?
